the whole begging a collar from a pixel deal is not my gig at all.
i was brought out of the matrix yearrrrrrrrrs ago

I would be bored stiff if I was only allowed to be chatting with my master. In this day and age, multi-tasking is key. I usually have many internet windows open, am watching a movie, and chatting with him... I still manage to reply to anything he say with pretty much zero down time. I know he does the same (maybe moreso than me).

If he and I were discussing something really important, I might pay better attention to it, but I'd still probably be doing something else on the side.

I think you just need to make your expectations clear. I would never assume that a messenger buddy-dom or otherwise-expected my undivided attention. And, unless they happened to be a lightning fast typist with a steady stream of interesting conversation, they couldn't expect to keep it.
