Great joke:

When you can speak several languages, they call you multi-lingual.

When you can speak two languages, they call you bilingual.

When you can only speak one language? "American."

Yeah, they call us "norteamericanos", which is also kind of silly.   Mexico is in North America, as is the entirety of Central America.

You're misinformed. Here, in the border states, the school districts are requiring it.

I was raised in Europe, speaking French and English; and my son is being raised in those two languages. I only wish I knew Spanish well enough that I could teach him that language as well, but alas! I'm not as fluent as I used to be.

My point is that it's very good for a child's education and development to learn more than one language from birth. Studies demonstrate this.

Children are not confused by hearing more than one language. It's been known for a long time that bilingual children separate their language from the age of 2. Multilingual kids have it even better: imagine learning three, four, five languages from birth! How cool is that?

quote:

Not only is learning a foreign language easier for children than it is for adults, but children who are exposed to other languages also do better in school, score higher on standardized tests, are better problem solvers and are more open to diversity, says Francois Thibaut, who runs The Language Workshop for Children, which has nine schools around the East Coast. Thibaut is a pioneer in foreign languages for babies and children and is the author of Professor Toto, an award-winning home-based foreign-language curriculum for parents and children.

The reason why some people are up in arms over these men is because they know 'only' Spanish. Had they been fluent in 'only' English, nobody would have given a rat's ass.

I wonder why that is?

Many English only speakers are starting to feel left out because Spanish is fast becoming as widely spoken as English in the United States. And what's wrong with that, except that the monolingual people had better started to smell the coffee and enrolled for adult education classes?

They'd better catch up: the world's moving on, whether they like it or not.

Attorneys for the men said they were studying the legality of the ruling and had not decided whether to appeal. One of the attorneys, Ferris Webby, suggested that the ruling was good for his client, Guzman-Mateo.
"My client is happy," Webby said. "I think it's going to help him."
The judge sentenced the four men to jail terms of four to 24 months. But he gave three of the men, who already had served at least four months, immediate parole. Reyes-Rosario remains imprisoned on an unrelated drug charge.
Olszewski ordered the three to return with their parole officers in a year and take an English test. "If they don't pass, they're going in for the 24 (months)," he said.
Olszewski is known for outside-the-box sentencing.
He has ordered young defendants who are school dropouts to finish school. He often orders defendants to get full-time employment. But he also has his staff coordinate with an employment agency to help them find the job.

Yeah, conspiracy to commit robbery.  It's still a felony.  You do realize that is a deportable offense?

Because the judge in this case chose not to deport them.  I am sure you believe in the rule of law?  Or does the rule of law only apply when you agree with the outcome?

The judge doesn't have the power to deport anyone.  But INS does, and they should deport any aliens that are commiting felonies.

I sure did, and I am correct.  It's how you're told to identify yourself in Spanish language courses.  It's something I refuse to do when I use my limited Spanish.  The use of "American" for residents of the United States holds a historical precedence.  We were the first nation independent of European rule, and we were the only ones to include the word in our title.  That's just the way it is, and it's tough shitsky for those that don't like it.

Never said that. Was just countering her point with a fact as it pertains to this area.

Didn't work very well. I've already established, and look me up if you want, that the stop sign is the only one to use that shape and color. Disregarding it's meaning has nothing to do with not being able to read the word, otherwise those who speak English would never run a stop sign.

It's not so much the accident itself that bugs me. It's the aftermath. If you're here illegally, you're driving illegally and you have no legal insurance. Which means any minor or severe accident that occurs totally screws the nice law-abiding person you hit.

Simple. Because if they spoke english, they wouldn't need a translator or any other tax-funded services intended to hold their hand and help them 'get by' without speaking the common language. Many of us believe that there 'should' be an official "english" language here, regardless of whether it will pass or not. Many are just sick and tired of doing to an ATM or hearing a recording on the phone saying "press 1 for english."

I'd love to learn another language. But I will choose that language. It will not be chosen for me.
