MissMorrigan -> Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 10:40:33 AM)

I'm fairly healthy, I exercise daily and have a good balanced diet of fruits and vegetables daily, along with very small quantities of meat (never red meats, only white such as chicken/turkey), very little dairy (usually in my tea, although sometimes I have milk in porridge if I have that for breakfast). I'll have whole grain bread every two to three days, so not a daily thing for me and yet, just lately I've been getting a painfully bloated upper abdomen. Even if I drink a small glass of water I feel bloated and uncomfortable.

Anyone else have something similar? I will go to my GP and have this checked out as soon as I am able to book some time off, however, in the meantime, I wondered if anyone had experienced something similar and could offer advice.

Maybe you need more fiber, try the weight managment fiber tablets just 2 a day. You can find them in the fiber section of your local drugstore.

Sounds like you have either a gas or upper GI problem.  Maybe prilosec would help?

I have IBS. Look into that, or possibly colitis. No fun at all.

Do you drink caffeine?

MissMorrigan -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 12:25:33 PM)

I'm nutrition-conscious and do have a fairly high fibre diet - I have bran daily as well as fruits/vegetables which I get fibre from. I never had a problem with my system until just recently, I'm not sure exactly what has changed, nothing that's obvious unless minor stress can be a factor - although that also has been rectified. Thank you for your suggestion though, dlp

My advice would be to see a doctor sooner, rather than later. Your body is giving you a warning sign and you should heed the warning. I would also suggest that the only advice you should ever take from folks in an online forum for these sorts of issues is to seek medical advice for your medical problem.

If it's a gas problem, god help anyone within a mile radius of me when it's released! I've not heard of Prilosec, will ask my pharmacist tomorrow, if not, I think the equivalent would be Windeeze.

I am guessing from the way you spell "fibre" you are not in the US so Prilosec probably has a different name where ever you are or it may not even be available.

MissMorrigan -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 12:31:44 PM)

Celeste, I am going to see a doctor for this as soon as I can book time off. My reason for asking in the forums is not to gain a diagnosis (that's what my GP is available for, although they frown at out-of-hours emergency calls for minor ailments such as a bloated abdomen), but to see if there was any advice regarding the relief of discomfort until I can get to a pharmacist in the morning.

kinda personal question...but how often do you have a bm?

MissMorrigan -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 12:33:55 PM)

That's wretched, Blushes, I have a friend that has IBS and she suffers terribly from it. When I get checked out by my gp I'll see what he has to say - likely, "Well, girl, I hate to tell you, but you're just full of wind!"

Typically every day, Dollparts. I also do drink caffeine, in tea, but keep it to one/two cups daily and have not had any for two days. I'm just wondering if I should walk around like a farmer would do a horse ;-)

I understand MissMorrigan and I truly feel for you. The problem is without knowing 'why' you're getting the pain, how to treat that pain may be ineffective or worse, detrimental to you.

Check out this link and perhaps you'll see other symptons and something will click which makes sense to you. Having a better idea of the cause might help you find something to relieve your pain armed with some knowledge that the cure won't kill ya! The fact that you are getting the pain/bloating even by just drinking water could point to something you might want to be concerned about which is that ingesting anything for pain relief may not be wise for you. I wish you quick recovery and future good health.

Yes I have a similar problem but much improving,My internist told me that diabetes can cause a problem with good healthy BMS..I am on a good diet with lots of fiber but have started last week adding a table spoon of miralax into my coffee about 3 times a week and its working well.It used to be a prescription only but now can be bought over the counter...It works well but would seek your doctors advice on this matter..

sounds to me that you may be taking in too much fiber then and it's causing gas. Maybe cut back a bit on the fiber?

and caffeine can cause bloating b/c it is a diuretic...but generally soda and coffee are worse with that than tea.

Miralax works great and it's safe to use everyday...when I was in the hospital all the girls were taking either Colace or Miralax everyday LOL I can't wait for Miralax to come in generic form so I can buy it OTC without spending a ton. It's so expensive! I use Colace everyday now...and it isn't working anymore. grrr.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 12:56:43 PM)

you might try something like alka-seltzer, or gas-x to break up the gas.   You can probably google these two and find an equivalent in your country.   Or even try grippe water. No reason why it shouldn't work for adults. [:@]

Maya2001 -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 1:13:17 PM)

Start paying attention to exactly what foods you are eating, for some reason for many people as they age they become intolerant of certain foods  which results in  gas, for myself raw cabbage or coleslaw  has become an extreme no-no in my diet as will cause bloating cramping   as time goes on I am having more more problems with several raw vegetables

having some yogurt with live cultures  can help reduce the effects  for many people with the exception of those with dairy intolerances who may find it causes the problem to become  worse  though an alternative to is taking
Lactobacillus acidophilus tablets instead which contains the live bacteria culture  without the dairy

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-acidophilus.html

We use this with greyhounds when we take them from the track and bring them into homes as stress can also be a cause of extreme gassiness so during the settling/adjustment period they are given 2tbsp dollops of yogurt mixed into each meal to help reduce the gas

MissMorrigan -> RE: Bloating of the Abdomen (3/30/2008 1:35:19 PM)

Thank you, Celeste. I am going to get checked out - I've known my gp since I was six years of age and b/c I see him so rarely he treats my visits as if I have something terminal, bless him! lol

I will check out the link and I have sipped my way through a small glass of milk, which has helped alleviate the pain a little. Thank you again for your best wishes, I'm sure a quick check up, minor diet alterations and I'll be as fit as a fiddle again soon.
