Anyone take Buspar?

Status: offline 		I have been trying to get her to change my meds forever b/c I was on the lowest dose of both meds and they were not working. She actually said I did not appear anxious...LOL wtf...I started crying...cried for like a half hour while she tried to figure out what to do with my meds...made like 6 or 7 phone calls b/c she's an idiot and doesn't know what to prescribe...and didn't even know the next highest dose of my antidepressant...So now I'm taking 30 mg Cymbalta (I was taking 20 mg), 100 mg Neurontin three times a day (which is the same as I was taking) and 5 mg Buspar, I think she said...but as needed...which I thought it had to be taken everyday for it to start working after a few weeks? LOL I'm gonna ask my pharmacist tomorrow when I pick it up. I didn't want to wait the 45 minutes to get it filled so I said I'd pick it up tomorrow. Anyone take any of these meds? Any bad side effects? I'm hoping it helps control my racing and obsessive thoughts...and help in my recovery.

oh and you know whats funny? She said that its okay for people with eating disorders to take Wellbutrin...LOL and wanted to put me back on it even though the doctor when I was IP said that it was dangerous for me to take it. LOL

Status: offline 		Sounds like you need a new doctor. It shouldn't be the pharmacist telling you if they are the right/wrong meds, or even the people in these forums.

I don't know your area, but you may be able to find a kink friendly psychiatrist - so you can be TOTALLY open about your life, and feel comfortable enough to ask these questions - and get the right results from the meds prescribed.

Status: offline 		yep...it's all she will prescribe for anxiety...besides Vistaril...which doesn't work...I'm hoping this works. When I was in the hospital I took Ativan and Klonopin...Klonopin worked great but my psych won't prescribe it to me now that I'm OP.

Status: offline 		okay I talked to the pharmacist and she said to make sure I take it at least once a day so it builds up and starts working. And to take it once more if I'm really anxious. She said that she has never seen it prescribed "as needed"

Status: offline 		Well, make sure you talk to that pharmacist a whole lot before she gets arrested.  She's practicing medicine without a medical license. She cannot tell someone to disregard the doctor's WRITTEN instructions and take it the way she thinks they should.

Status: offline 		Your response is a non-sequitur.  Knowing about something (and I won't even debate that point with you) has ZERO to do with being licensed to give PROFESSIONAL advice on it.

But you're right, ignore your doctor's WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS and just do what the pharmacist tells you.

You are so right there. I was hospitalized last week for chest pain, which they wanted to treat with morphine, even though I told the doctor twice I am taking subutex, which inhibits opiod medications. I had to make a big fuss before they would check and then they sent a different nurse in to administer a non-narcotic pain med. Guess they didn't like being wrong.
When in doubt I always call my pharmacist first. My doc didn't even know how fast I might go toxic on Lithium and damn near killed me by neglecting to check how much was in my blood. I do usually inform my doc of what I learned from the Rx though. It's best to be an informed patient and keep all parties on the same page.

Status: offline 		Whilst I would not rely solely on the pharmacists thoughts, I would question a doctor whos prescription negates recommended advice for a product.
 
A doctor I had told me that she would not recommend taking anti depres medication, mood enhancing drugs without consulting a mental health professional.  And to be honest, I believe that doll parts is correct in questioning a prescription for a drug that is 'as needed' when the drug in question should not be taken for prolonged periods and needs time to 'build up' - like buspar does.
 
I'm not suggesting she listen only to the pharmacist, but I do recommend she question why the discrepancy of her doctor.  I really would go somewhere else for another opinion.

Yes, pharmacists know more about medication interactions than most doctors, but they lack the knowledge that comes from examinations and knowing your personal medical history.  Blindly changing a drug regimen on the word of a pharmacist alone is foolish.

Contact your doctor and discuss your conversation with the pharmacist before changing anything.

Status: offline 		I am going to talk to my psych next time I go in...or maybe sooner...b/c she only gave me 60 pills for 8 weeks >.< so I'm probably gonna need to call in and get a refill before my appointment.

Status: offline 		I agree with you 100%  on that dark. Sometimes doctors give off-label instructions for a reason (and sometimes it's just a mistake), but a pharmacist would have no way of knowing that. 

As far as the PP with the lithium issues, I would find a new doctor if my current doctor prescribed lithium without scheduling blood work on a regular basis.  It is standard medical practice to do that.

And she always says I'm wrong...when I know I'm right and another doctor told me it...like she said that Wellbutrin is fine for eating disorder patients to take...LOL umm...no...and she said that eating disorders don't increase your risk of seizure...which they do. She also had me on Geodon before I went into the hospital...which is not supposed to be taken with low potassium...and she said the pharmacist was wrong about Topamax and Trileptal interfering with my birth control.

Why are you still with this doctor? If it were me, i'd find another shrink and fast. I do think it's a good idea to consult a pharmacist BUT to discuss what the pharmist said with your doctor afterwards. And Cali is right, the pharmacist doesn't know your history, that's why it's important to discuss this with your doctor.
