Gwynvyd -> BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 2:44:35 PM)

So many people and Dr's base the health on this BMI concept...

First of all BMI means Body Mass Index.

It is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. As such, it is useful as a population measure only, and is not appropriate for diagnosing individuals. It was invented between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet during the course of developing "social physics".
Body mass index is defined as the individual's body weight divided by the square of their height. The formulas universally used in medicine produce a unit of measure of kg/m 2

BMI can also be determined using a BMI chart, which displays BMI as a function of weight (horizontal axis) and height (vertical axis) using contour lines for different values of BMI or colors for different BMI categories.

So it was made by a Belgian Math Geek back in 1830... ( body types and sizes were much different then) and it was not even invented to measure the health of a person.. or "how fat or thin" they were.

The Pharmaceutical companies all have diet pills in the works.. and some on the market that make having an "Obesity Epidemic" quite conveinent. Also conveinent are these fad diets where if they dont work.. you blame the fat ass for not "sticking with it" or for having "low will power".

Some people are healthy at a low weight some are healthy at a higher weight. People and thier bodies vary. Measuring yourself against this outdated never ment to be used in this manner chat is ubsurd.

Here is a pictoral illustration of the BS. http://flickr.com/photos/77367764@N00/sets/72157602199008819/  Esp look at Shauna in the red shirt. She doesnt look fat to me. Shannon in the corset is freakin hot.. but "obese", page 2 Jessica is one hot overweight Triathlete! and shows again that the stupis assed chart does not account for bone or muscle mass. She is one muscular chickie.. look at them thighs.. damn.

According to this chart most of us unless supermodel thin would be fat fucks.

According to BMI Brad Pitt is over weight and George Clooney is Obese. Do they look like fat bastards to you?

until 1998, a BMI of 27.8 or less was considered to be healthy in the United States until it was changed to another arbitrary number (25) to come into line with the World Health Organization.

Yo yo weight loss does much more damage then just being fat and happy. It places too much strain and stress on your organs.

http://www.caymannetnews.com/cgi-script/csArticles/articles/000052/005243.htm

Writing in the Lancet medical journal, the researchers from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester, Minnesota, found that patients with a low BMI had a higher risk of death from heart disease than those with normal BMI.
At the same time overweight patients had better survival rates and fewer heart problems than those with a normal BMI.
This apparently perverse result, drawn from data from 40 studies covering 250,000 people with heart disease, did not suggest that obesity was not a health threat but rather that the 100-year-old BMI test was too blunt an instrument to be trusted.

http://www.aphroditewomenshealth.com/news/bmi_lie.shtml
And the people dying in the Obesity epidemic? yeah.. that is bullshit too.

The 2004 scare-stats put out by the Centers for Disease Control - that 400,000 deaths in the US were caused annually by obesity - were flawed to the point of deliberate lying. They measured how many of the people who died in the given year - died at all; in car crashes, of Lyme's disease, in bar fights, whatever, it didn't matter, they were all lumped in there - were obese, and then lumped all the deaths of obese people in as death from obesity. It's roughly analogous to saying that a smoker who dies in a cholera outbreak died of smoking. They may have been trying to give people a wake-up call but it's shockingly untruthful.

The only one I know who died of obesity *might* have been Mama Cass... but some say it was a chicken salad sandwich. (bloody wankers at the Pharmaceutical companies trying to make us all buy into the bullshit.. they had a lot of you fooled didnt they?)

So set down the tape measurers step off the scales.. back away from the ledges... eat a healthy sensible meal.. walk your dog.. or get some exercise... and be happy. If you are a fat bastard.. be a happy fat bastard. Fuck em.

I will save a spot for you in my booth at the Chinese Buffet.

Gwyn,
A happy size 18~ hippy, curvaceous, and fuck em all if they dont like it.

well, if you don't care about your health enough to lose weight...die younger than you have to. It's your life. Every pound you are over weight makes your heart work harder...a size 18 is FAR from healthy...and it is not curvy. It is fat. And you're probably morbidly obese...at least my friend who wears a size 18 is morbidly obese...she's having weight loss surgery at the end of the month.

Well bless your little heart. With you at 5'1" and weighting over 280 pounds I don't think you have room for that statement dollpart.

At least I'm trying to lose weight. I finally have my thyroid under control and I'm losing a health 1-2 lbs of body fat per week.

Any time you want darlin....

*winks*

Gwyn,
Who has never had a problem finding suitors being a size 10 or a size 28... it is all in how you act.. and your own perception of who you are. Not some dress size.

RCdc -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 3:53:57 PM)

Hello dollparts
Well, I am a size 16-18 depending on the cut.  Breastage is a big factor in my fitting, and most people do not believe I am that size at all and I do not consider myself overweight and neither does my doctor.  Please remember that height, breast size and hips(particularly after childbirth) play a large part in sizing.

Lets keep to the thread and not get personal.

MissHarlet -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 3:59:20 PM)

I also am a 16-18 and at 5'10" most dont realise that ... and it does depend on breast size and hip size after childbirth ....

Health is determined by soo many factors .... and what is right for one isnt for another ... so Gwyn & the dark... if your Dr.. says you are healthy .. then that is all that matters .. not what anyone else thinks

shysub0951 -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:04:08 PM)

i'm between a 14-16 and when i wear clothes that fit to my body, i don't look it at all. It, like some of you said above, depends on your own perception of your body. And yes i do have to agree with both MissHarlet and DarcytheDark on breast size, i'm a big breasted and it does add weight to your body. i've been told the each breast is about 5 lbs. so adding 10 extra pounds onto your frame, no matter the height, will make you seem bigger.

sirsholly -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:05:28 PM)

the bmi chart is subjective at best. It does not take into account the amount of muscle one has. I have muscular legs from coaching a 4-5 yr olds soccer team (the lil darlin's run me ragged).  The BMI chart tells me i am overweight. I wear a size 2.

Now i can be criticized here for being too thin, as others are criticized for being too heavy. That is all bullshit. What counts is the way you feel about yourself, the self esteem you have, the level of self worth that shows in how you take care of yourself. I take pride in how i present myself, as does Gwyn and many others here. When people look at me i do not think they see my size, but rather one who presents with confidence.

Edited to add:
And you know what, ladies? GOOD FOR US!!!!!

JohnWarren -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:06:40 PM)

I used to command a Marine Recon Platoon.  At that time my weight was 200 pounds and I was 5'8".  I'm still 200 pounds and 5'8".  I guess that means I'm in the same shape as I was.

Strange, I have to find out who that fat balding guy is who is looking back out of the mirror.

Gwynvyd -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:15:12 PM)

There is a lot to be said for HWP. My size 18 is on a 5'11 frame. A large decently still muscular frame. At a size 10 I looked ill. People fed me and made me put on more weight till I looked ok. Those who know me well know of my Equestrain accident and how I balloned up to a size 28. I have been gradualy and in a *healthy* way losing all of that weight... and keeping it off as I go. The size I look my best at is about a size 14. I am a freaking Amazon. Smaller then that and bones stick out and I am just not healthy. You could boil me down and my bones would be a size 8 on thier own. LOL

I think having a positive self image is very important.. much more important then looking at these charts... and your dress size and determining how you feel about yourself from there.

I have the same partners I had as a Size 16-28 over the last 10 years... they didnt run away.. they didnt think less of me.. they loved me for me. ( of course I chose wisely from the begining )

Loving yourself first is the most important.. the rest follows.

So please don't buy into the Obesity Epidemic BS. It happened over night that thousands and thousands got added to the list when they changed the numbers... and the whole system is flawed and never ment to be used to gauge it like that any way.

Gwyn

Perhaps you should keep that thought in mind when you're in threads other people have started.

lighthearted -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:19:35 PM)

the first time I figured out my BMI, I knew it was bull.  at the time I was exercising regularly, eating well, a size 10...far from obese.  my ancestry has determined my body type:  strong, solid, with a tendency toward the muscular.

while I'm certainly not in the same shape I was 10 years ago, I've also birthed a couple of babies,  I'm a size bigger now, and I still don't consider myself obese.

in my mind, there is no relationship between BMI and health, attractiveness or longevity.  it's a tool some people choose to measure themselves by.  I'm certainly not one of them.

there's a great book, I forgot who wrote it, basically he talks about as how you get older and less active, with the slower metabolism, etc how your muscle mass decreases and your fat stores increase (along with the memory loss).  so you may way the same but look chubbier and be a bigger size.  gawd, don't you just love getting older [:D]

edited because I'm getting lamer as I get older.

At a 14 people tell me I look anorexic .... so I understand .....a 14 on some one who is 5' tall looks very different than on someone of our height........if I were a size 2  I would be dead .... and look as if I had been dead for years .......

Its individual ... and how you feel and carry yourself.... confidence in yourself is always attractive...... no matter your weight or height.....

dollparts85 -> RE: BMI is Bull Sh*t (4/1/2008 4:29:59 PM)

I have a friend who is 5'8 and wears a size 0...she's not even that thin...LOL
