*Raises hand to present a conflicting opinion* Um, the BMI may be flawed, but what other tool do we have right now to effectively calculate body mass? And yes, I DO think there is an obesity epidemic in America right now. All I have to do is look around me on any given day, or go to a local elementary school. Children a generation ago were not as fat as they are now, and their health is being put at risk. As a junk food eating, soda-drinking, prepared-food loving American, I'm just as guilty of the behaviors that breed obesity as anyone else. I just happen to do it in maybe a little more moderation and with a little bit of genetic blessing that keeps me a size 2 (at 5'. PS - my BMI is a 22, and I would like to get it back down below 20.) I just don't think we should be so quick to dismiss the only tool we have to gauge obesity when we haven't developed a new one yet. If anyone else has some suggestions for monitoring healthy body weight, I'd love to hear 'em.

One way may be to have fitness/activity considered with the BMI.  Use aerobic & strength attributes.

So do you guys ever get squicked when you see HWP on a profile?

I just laugh and shake my head.  If someone is more interested in looks than skill, it's their loss.  After all, I've gotten to know some of the best dominants in the scene and most of them, like myself, have a few more pounds than is currently fashionable.

Yummy!  [8D]

My Daddy is a big, handsome man, and I must say that I adore men with something squeezable around their middle.  He is so very secure in Himself and that confidence is amazingly sexy.  He is the one who brought me out of my fat-shell, and explained to me that I was His, and that no one talks down about His girl, not even His girl.  (We won't get into how He proved to me that He wasn't kidding about that...  ouch.)

Now, as big as I am, (and I've been bigger and I've been smaller), I've found that I can still get sweet looks from cute guys and girls, and I have no problem getting naked at the club and getting hooked to a St. Andrews cross in front of whomever may be there.  It's part of the confidence that my Daddy has instilled into me that makes me able to stand proud, knowing that I have value and appeal, no matter what size my plushy-goodness comes in.   [:)]

*back from the dead* ~ Sorry I took a bit off to get out and get my swerve on. LOL

I think that is wonderful! I believe in the inherent worth and dignity in every human being. ( my upbringing ) I do not put down the people around me.. or allow them to put themselves down either. ( Even if it takes a rolled up newspaper to convince them to knock it off) *smiles*

Did my comments about gravey sucking and stinky chinese food get removed, because when i searched topics I posted in this one no longer came up and I assumed it was cause it'd been yanked, but no here it is.

JohnWarren's post (#53) is a fantastic post.

Regarding BMI, I don't see how squaring the numerator has any effect whatsoever on the accuracy or precision of the measurement.

Seems to me that it might be better to try and quantify (at least partially) frame size WRT Ht-Wt charts. For instance, the circumference of the rib cage at the sternum at a certain height might have a strong correlation. I dunno, I'm just thinkin' out loud, as it were. For women, subtracting breast mass (breasts vary in weight, as was pointed out earlier) might improve accuracy of any guide. Should be easy to determine (a bit messy, but easy).

Interesting stuff to contemplate (but then, I'm easily amused. Almost everything is interesting to me.) Peace

The bone structure has to be considered when consider what weight is appropriate

for example if you compared a thoroughbred or arab to a  draft horse  or greyhound to mastiff or newfoundland     if they were of equal heights  the weight that is suitable for one is totally unsuitable for the other as their breed builds are totally different, even within breeds there can be different phenotype for example the racing  greyhound there are 3 distinct builds  which was developed because some breeders preferred the difference in racing styles  they are classifed as A)  stride over power -a very rangy look , very tall , long in the back and very narrow in the chest , they push off primarily on their hind legs and have a huge stride  eg  http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/mleg2001/?action=view&current=fd58a1b6e.jpg  Callie was my tallest and longest greyhound  standing 281/2  inches-- taller than many males  that would outweigh her by 15 to 20 lbs she raced at 70 lbs   B)  is power of speed  they tend to be short  compact  and have heavily muscled necks, chest shoulder and hunches they propel forward using both front and back quarters really digging in because of the power they exert  they also tend to have the most hock fractures my male Sunny is only 25 1/2 at the shoulder is my smallest both in height and length yet is the heaviest of my 3  weighing 82 lbs, he  raced as a grade A racer  logging in close to 150 races in  1 1/2 years placing in the money for the majority of his races making him one of the top racers at the track he was at until he blew his hock though stocky and heavy compared to most greyhound his wieght was due to a heavier bone structure and  more muscle mass and he had to be that weight and heaviness to race successfully he also has a larger heart and lungs inorder to exert that much more energy and needs to take more strides to keep up with the longer legged greys  so he is wider in girth  http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/mleg2001/?action=view&current=Sunny9.jpg
C)  is the classic build which is the most common which is a mix of the 2  trying to get the benefits of both power and stride this girl  is 26 inches tall and 68 lbs and a good example of the classic build

the same  applies to people that are distinctly different builds and basing desirable weight on height just will not work

a lot of threads in this forum got yanked because they had nothing to to with the topic at hand.  don't feel alone.

Regarding BMI, how is it that when using the caliper method vs. the electronic device there can be a substantial difference? This is on the same person.
