I have been unable to find any information on the use of toys causing urinary tract infections. I am talking only about clean average toys... vibes, dildos...

Does the "honeymoon syndrome" apply to the use of toys also?

Any other MEDICAL information specific to the lifestyle and urinary tract infections would be helpful.

Thank you

I don't know about "Specifically Medical" But I do know that I'm pretty damn prone to them when things get rough. My Doctor finally just told me to go to the health food store and buy an herbal cranberry suppliment and take it daily. It helps a lot actually... which is good because I hate the way cranberry juice tastes.

This has happened to me from a favorite vibe I neglected to clean off properly one time. It's vitally important that toys get a bath after play, or bacteria will stay on them and get re-introduced to sensitive areas, causing UTIs and other nonsense. If the toy can't be submersed in soap and water, get some spray anti-bacterial toy cleaner (most adult toy sites/shops carry it) or good ol' antibacterial wet wipes.

Toys can cause infections, just as easily as a hard go-round can. The reason is, the urethra touches the vaginal wall. Too much irritation can cause swelling or infections. If you're searching for information, you can find it by looking for urinary infections caused by intercourse, and learning more about the female organs, where they're at, how they interact, how they affect one another, etc.

Thank you for your comment on the anti bacterial wet wipes... wondered if those could be used on silicone do you know?

I clean religiously but bought some wipes the other day.

Even when I use a sanatizer cloth, I find myself rinsing the item off. Water and soap is the best defense. If you're ultra paranoid, you can buy Hibiclinse soap at most medical supply stores and online.

Make sure the wipes are alcohol-free, or you're going to be screaming in agony and wishing for death.  Learned the hard way that my cha-cha does not like alcohol (unless it's the fun, drinkable kind, in which case I suppose it's really what's attached to it that gets excited).

A lot of toys can actually be porous, so no matter how well you think you've cleaned them, there's a chance you could infect yourself, especially if you've previously used them during an infection, UTI or otherwise.  UTI's can actually be caused by bacterial vaginosis, which causes a whitish-yellowish discharge, and when it comes in contact with your urethra can instigate a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, or if it goes unchecked, could even cause a kidney infection.

I'm incredibly susceptible to UTI's/hemhorragic cystitis and get bad flare-ups from any sort of rubbery toy, latex, most kinds of lube, condoms, the wrong brand of toilet paper, etc.  In order to combat this I've put myself on a daily regimen of cranberry capsules (I've been told 100% cranberry juice, NOT cocktail, is better, but the smell of it alone makes me gag) and I go through about a gallon of water per day to flush myself out.  The OTC medication called Cystex also works wonders for me in the event that I do get a flare-up -- it's a generic antibiotic and analgesic that can usually knock out minor infections on its own.

All you can do when it comes to toys is know what you're sensitive to and keep them as clean as you can.  Never put a dirty toy away in your toybox as it could potentially contaminate other toys.  Hell, I even like to give them a good once-over when I take them out.  Oh, and avoid going from anal to vaginal with the same toy... besides causing a nasty case of mud-flaps, it can also cause infection.  I tend to designate one dildo for anal penetration and the other for vaginal and avoid crossing the two.

well.. its nice when you have toys that are dishwasher safe. The cleaner you can get the toy the better you will be in the long run. I am thankfull I have not had a UTI *knock on wood* (not that kinda wood) but seriously I have used antibacterial wet wipes on toys and good ol soap and water, sometimes I have thrown the item in the dishwasher if i still didnt feel comfy with it. dunno what else to tell you. Also make sure you are not playing with toys from the anus to the vagina without cleaning them first. I am sure you knew this but thought I would share it anyways.

clean them as many have said, but also use condoms and gloves on all of them -- it helps and it will prolong the life of your toys

you might also go pee after the scene as soon as possible - helps wash bacteria out of the system.   cranberry pills also work well, but you have to be taking them before the play.                                 am  urology nurse

i am fanatic about cleaning my toys so i know i don't get uti's from that.  i get them when i'm really horny but i'm not wet yet i fuck myself anyway.  i use AZO Cranberry supplements from Wal-mart they are cheap, good, and don't taste bad.

My doc recommended 2 things when I was having UTIs
First was AZO cranberry, Natures Bounty Cranberry or Sundown Botanical (i think thats the brand) Cranberry.  H was very brand loyal, and I assumed he had a reason to be.
Second, plenty of lube regardless of whether you were playing with toys or a partner. He said to me that part of my consistant UTI issue was related to penetration without proper lubrication that was causing irritation and eventually UTIs
cleaning and condoms are essential. AS FnF said, hibicleanse is actualy not a bad idea. A little goes a long way since you dilute it pretty well and it does a great job disinfecting.

By the way, you can clean toys all you want.. but they are for the most part porous surfaces -- with the exception of glass and stainless... and really you can't get them clean.. in my business (non sex related) you pitch anything that's porous because you can never really get it clean...

in the end, as I said.. condoms... a barrier is helpful...

Well as it has been said Condoms are the best route. It is a barrier that is disposable. Unless it is a stainless steel or glass toy it has a porus surface.

Before any type of play I usualy have folks do a once over with the wet wipes after peeing ( the whole mid way through I have to get up and pee thing is a bit irksome LOL and it also helps clear away the bacteria by flushing the bladder and cleaning the area with the wipe.)

Each insertable toy has it's sealed ziploc bag. After being washed in anti bacterial foaming soap and being dried it goes back into it's bag. Those bags are kept in the same drawer with the condoms, gloves and lube. ~ We use forplay lube since it has turned out to be the most hypoalergenic for us. I keep a plastic tray with a towel on it, and baby wipes on the bedside table so that used toys when switching out can go on the tray.. and not contaminate any surfaces. ( Did I mention I am anal-retentive when it comes to germs and hygiene?)

The moment knees are solid the girl is marched off to go pee, and flush her system.. and use the wipes again so no UTI's can be had.. and also as a clean up measure.

and of course toys get dumped in sink for a soapy bath. Towel gets fliped over and folded and the cleaning/puting away process begins after we relax a bit.

Also be aware that soaking baths with heavily perfumed oils or bath salts contribute to UTI's as does holding off using the bathroom when you have the urge.

Good luck!

Gwyn,
who when she was younger was plauged by UTI's

It's not necessarily the toy causing the "honeymoon syndrome" or "honeymoon cystitis", it's what you're doing with it - meaning it's generally the rigorous sex, whether it is with a toy or a body part.  About.com has a pretty succinct article if you interested, here

It's your own bacteria that get pushed into the urethra, so even sterile toys can do it.  They've done studies; cranberry is no better than placebo, so save your $$, but eating yoghurt [NOT PROBIOTIC which can cause diarrhea and cramps] with lactobacillus can help promote the good bacteria.  Don't bother with the lactobacillus capsules which have to be refrigerated; eat the real stuff; gives you Vit D and protein for another round of climaxing.  Try using a toy that's oval [wide side-to-side]; round ones stretch you the wrong way and put pressure on the urethra.

Drink plenty of water before anything goes inside, toy, finger, penis:  wipe 'front to back', and I set my alarm to one hour post-orgasm, meaning, I fall asleep and my guy sets the alarm, and I get up to urinate, drink again, go back to sleep, and I haven't had an infection since.  However, if I forget and the next time I wake up is next morning, too late!

If the toy is just silicone then you should be able to boil it for a few minutes to kill any bacteria (plus it is kind of fun to have a pot of sex toys cooking on the stove).

I know that many people (including doctors) recommend taking a piss after masturbation or sexual activity, that way you can flush out any microbes that may have ended up in your urethra.

I'd be carefull mixing alcoholic wipes and sex toys, since there might be a bad chemical reaction that could cause the toys to leech toxic stuff that you don't want anywhere near your dangily bits. I'm not an expert on this, but I would err on the side of caution here.

Also, many people have bad reactions to "jelly rubber" sex toys. They are the subject of a huge debate in the sex toy industry. Some sex toy stores, such as Minnesota's "Smitten kitten" don't sell them due to their toxicity.

One note: never use anything but water based lubes with silicon. Don't even use silicon based lubes with silicon made toys.
