Greetings. My Master thoroughly enjoys collars for all occasions, for play and for ownership. He has several which I would be proud to wear, except that I am allergic to the metal. O or D rings, clasps in the back, studs... all of that gives me an embarassingly huge and itchy rash around my neck. Does anyone know where to look for collars without metal that touches the skin? Any suggestions on how to remedy the situation? Thank you.

I would suggest some heavy hemp rope, and various knotted designs. They can manage some major abuse, and there is absolutely no metal to touch your skin. I am considering something like that for Fox, since the collar he wears has been irritating his neck. Or you might want to look into a collar with stainless steel and see if you are sensative to that as well. They might be a tad harder to find (though real dog collars tend to be stainless) and they might not react so badly

I had the same issue, in the end, we got him a collar made from braided suede, that tied up at the back, the same would work with a "rattail" cord. I would find out what metals you are allergic to and then search, for gold/silver/platinum/titanium, etc etc.
This isnt an unusual situation, it will just take longer to find something that doesnt cause you the dreaded itchy rash.

Titanium and Tungston are hypo alergenic. have you had any experience with them?

If you have a fast rash to show you could go to a jewlery store and try one of the rings on there, they are expensive metals, so that would let you know if you are allergic to them before you buy something more expensive.

Well, you could always get a collar that has an inside lining that completely encircles your neck, so none of the metal ever touches your skin, or i could make you one that "buckles" by being woven in the back. Not sure if there are other places to get this particular design, especially since i did it for myself because i don't always like the way buckles look, or that the weight of them eventually rotates them to the front.

But anyway, you could always google something like metal-free bdsm collars?

I also have metal allergies. My cuff set and collar came from http://www.licksandlashes.com/

Nothing metal touches the skin as everything is nicely lined. The quality is wonderful. Have had my set for nearly 3 years and it still looks new. Can wear them without any trouble for many hours and no itching or turning red. They are also very reasonably priced. The buckles are the locking kind which is really nice.

Just went to licksandlashes and they do make some collars that aren't fully lined now. The ones i have are like the ones on the top row of the collar page. It shows a collar with ankle and wrist cuffs as a set. Mine are black and purple.

Are you allergic to all metals, or just some?

Most common metal allergies are to nickel, which is used in the shiny plating on cheap studs and buckles, or else the copper that's just underneath it. If you get a metal collar that's all stainless or aluminum, you may not have that problem. i don't think anyone makes leather gear with stainless hardware, but you may be able to get a stainless buckle from a marine or dive store and retrofit it.

Another option is the plastic squeeze-snap fittings usually used with nylon collars and such-

If looking for a play/training collar look into dog collars made with plastic(acetal) hardware, some also have the plastic d rings possibly petsmart

and if you are really having trouble finding all plastic you can find hardware here and order in tiny quantities and make your own, the site also includes kits with instructions to make but they come with metal d rings so you would need to purchase the plastic rings seperately if you want the instructions...If you choose the kit I would recommend a 1 " classic style with curved side release http://www.cdwplus.com/index.html

The link petdave included is what I meant but the length of those 1 inch collars would be too big for a human neck , which is common with most 1 inch width collars ..... most 12 to 17/19 inch lengths which would fit a human will be 1/2 or 5/8 wide only

What about a collar that was leather, and used stitching in place of rivets. They certainly make plastic D rings and plastic buckles. You could likely get a very nicely designed collar. I'll use Mr.S as an example.

Typical collar, metal D rings, metal rivets, metal buckle. You of course have the wider band of leather, and then you have the thin band of leather, that holds the D rings, and locking post/buckle. The thins trip of leather, could be sewn to the wide strip, instead of rivets. You could still have strong, durable D rings, just substitute them for plastic D rings, and you can sew the thin strip down, to anchor the rings well enough.

I am not sure if they made plastic locking buckles, but you could almost certainly get a plastic post and drill a hole through it and find another means of securing the collar if you really needed to secure it. Or simply use a normal plastic buckle.

Just some thoughts from a newbie.

Well, I'm still working on the design, but give me a couple weeks, and I'll have some all wood collars on my website. The plans include all wood with a place for a lock of some sort and wooden internal hinge, and ones with leather hinges and or internal screws to close them.

All of our collars and cuffs are designed so there in no metal contact inside. We sew rather than rivet, eliminating metal contact and making them fully flexible.

or easiest of all.. just add a felt lining to one of the ones that he has that does have metal on the back.
or fake fur... extra comfort, and removes any potential allergic reactions

That or take clear nail polish and put it lightly over the metal that would be on your skin. It wont ruin the metal or the leather you just have to let it dry but ive used it on any metal that irriates the my skin and its worked well. If you dont want to try it on one of his collars see if you can find one at a pet store or at walmart and try it to see if it works first before applying it to his.

collars I make along with cuffs and other restraints all have the option of a leather lining on the inside to prevent any metal from contacting the skin.

if you are a do-it-yourselfer, you can use a strip of leather (reduced width on one end with holes, slotted hole on the other end) with a piece of wood or antler as the adjustment piece.

My allergy is with leather once I sweat..the tannins used make me come out in a rash which is why I make my own collars out of chainmaille.

You can also make/get some beaded collars..no metal at all.. something of a tight weave such as peyote or brickstich wil not fray or come apart and would look lovely ( I have one I made myself.. and the beauty is it can be decorated too)
