Revealing body scanners used in N.Y., L.A.

Screeners can peer beneath clothing to detect concealed weapons

updated 8:34 a.m. PT, Fri., April. 18, 2008

" NEW YORK - Airports in New York and Los Angeles have become the latest equipped with body scanners that allow security screeners to peer beneath a passenger's clothing to detect concealed weapons.

The machines, which are about the size of a revolving door, use low-energy electromagnetic waves to produce a computerized image of a traveler's entire body."

(break)

" For now, the scans will also be voluntary. Flyers selected for a secondary screening after passing through the metal detectors will have the option of stepping into the wave scanner, rather than undergoing a physical pat-down.

"We're giving people a choice," said TSA spokeswoman Lara Uselding.

Barry Steinhardt, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's program on technology and liberty, said he nevertheless had concerns.

"The images that I've seen are quite revealing," he said. "I guarantee you that as this gets more commonly used, you'll be seeing these images on the Internet." "

Gee, now Senator what's his name will be hanging around the scanners in the airports instead of the men's rooms.

Sky harbor air port in Phx also offers the choice to use this scan , i think they were first tested and used  here first .There was alot of coverage  on them in the local news some months back .Its not like seeing a full nude  image more like a shadowing outline .I did see a scan image of  the underwire bra  and keys in a pocket of a skirt .Gee i wonder what they would say about a chastity device ,metal collar and  piercings ?

easier then taking off shoes.

I dont care if someone views me naked.  I am nothing to look at.  Most folks look better wearing clothes.

Heck- start up strip music, I will dance going thru the airport.  Do a tap dance; break dance; while singing barry mantilow.  with a long red rose in my mouth.

I shall then show you champaign glasses for two.  I will then pour you and myself a glass of bubbly, as I stare into your pretty blue ayes, and carrass you pretty hair.

I then will reach out and erotically carress your x-ray gun,  as I then

insert it into my  lips.

my red lips that are glossy and moist.....

Then- as I approach your toes, I notice the toe lint, and how your feet stink..  stink alot.

I get discusted.

Then put on my wraps.  For this is one trip, that while I am ready; you are not.                  ;-0

Wouldn't bother me either if it gets us through security faster.  I'm already a nudist I've got nothing anyone who has wanted to see hasn't already.

i can see it now, a queue of terrorists in an airport saying 'yeah go on and scan me, i dont mind'

i hope it becomes a case of no scan, no flight!

I'm sure some of you saw a week or two back where a woman in (I think) Amarillo, Tx, was required to remove her nipple piercings at the airport, even tho she consented to a patdown.  She's sueing TSA.

For them to ask her to remove her piercings after she agreed to a 'pat down' they surely must have had deeper concerns - right?! i mean airports have every right & passengers should be thankful that they are being so cautious...besides, would anyone feel different about the woman with nipple piercings if they found that she removed them & still had something to hide?

I think that it would, proudsub.  Seriously, a person having metal implants from surgery would be the one good reason to go through a scanner like that, IMO.

Probably.  My mom (73yrs old and tiny) had hip replacement done about 5 yrs ago.  It's the rule rather than exception that she gets pulled to the side, wanded and even a couple of times, patted down - because her hip sets off the scanners.

FFS, folks.. she's SEVENTY THREE YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!  105 lbs, soaking wet! Often using a cane (for long walks - if you've ever had to get around hartsfield airport in Atlanta you know how far apart those gate changes can be).

ETA: the last time she and I flew together, I was dressed in my leather jacket, studded belt, hair in umpteen colors, piercings.

Now, who looks more like trouble? The woman wearing a pair of jeans, walking with a cane, grey haired with a doctors letter explaining the hip surgery?

Or the chick with attitude?

Guess who got waved through?

Other than the original outcry, there hasn't been anything said about the scanners in Sky Harbor at PHX.  They actually showed someone walking thru it on one of the newscasts....all the body parts were fuzzed out, nothing revealing showed up.

I cringed when I read and saw the news reports of that woman in Amarillo...she literally had to RIP the one piercing out with pliers....I hope she gets every penny of what she's asking for, and another 25 grand tossed in on top!  I am the last person to advocate a lawsuit, too many frivolous ones out there, but those idiots at the TSA stations in these airports need to pull their heads out of their asses, and realize that if someone's going to take a plane out of the sky, they aren't going to use anything that can be readily located.  The fanatics that brought down the WTC should provide obvious proof of that!

I wonder if anyoe has ever thought of this.....they have the entire world focused on airplane security, that everything else is pretty much unprotected.  When Osama tried in the 90's to bring down the WTC with a car bomb, my friends and I were all discussing it in the aftermath of new security measures being taken in NYC for vehicles entering possible "targets",  I told my buddies that if they wanted to do anything, it was going to come from the air.......and I was totally serious at the time.  They all thoought I was nuts, and said it could never happen....little did we know.  Americans just don't understand the depth of the religious beliefs of those terrorists, death means nothing to them, either their own or anyone elses.

I think you're right about that.  When I had jury duty recently my hip never set off the metal detector at the courthouse, kind of surprised me.
