I sat that Steel mentioned having a BDSM safety/emt kit and it got me thinking (mostly along the lines of, "hey, that's a good idea!")

1) Does anyone else do something like this?  I have a regular emergency kit but not one devoted to bdsm.

2) What items should be added to the standard fare (gauze, bandages, disinfectent, etc...) to upgrade a normal medkit to a "BDSM" medkit?

latex gloves, vagisil cream, ani-septic wipes, puppy training pads, condoms, lube, scissors, surgical spirit, cotton wool, tiger balm..........maybe other things too but i definitely alsways carry my kit with me.

Pretty much all that is listed so far is a great list and I see the mention of burn cream and bolt cutters.  Although it isn’t necessarily medical, my emergency kit also includes a fire extinguisher.

Being a Type Two Diabetic myself I can say that having those might not always help. I have had Drops and Raises that felt like the other so I have a HIGH count that felt like a Low Glucose Tabs could have put me in a Sugar Coma.

If you are playing with a Diabetic Check Blood Sugar BEFORE you start and then again if they start looking GONE. If the BGL has risen or dropped any more than 15 points..... Give them water then take another reading in 15 mins.

IF you are with someone who HAS these Drops and Rises, They will know what is best for them after the second test. For me it is Orange Juice for others it is Crackers, Know the person you play with.

And one more thing. When it comes to a Diabetic no one should force them to take ANYTHING, Glucose substitute or not. Why? Because ONLY a Diabetic knows what is best for them, the only other person they should listen to is thier doctor.

Because of issues with Bruising My Doc knows about my Kinky lifestyle so that you know Dr. Patient Priveledge protects you that doesn't stop the nurses from reading your file the girl who now takes my Blood Pressure refuses to look me in the Eye. I am Still glad the Doc knows because he has helped me to understand giving people a Glucose Tab can be a Bad Idea if for some reason you are on a HIGH and they don't know that it could make it worse.

Like I keep saying KNOW you partner and make sure your partner knows themselves.

In diabetes education classes (and also in first aid), the way I was taught is that the risk to benefit ratio is such that if you don't have a glucometer handy and opt for OJ or glucose ...there is a greater margin of error available generally for going too high than too low...below 70 is generally considered hypoglycemic.
Generally, one's body can better handle too high vs too low; if your sugar drops, you lose your ability to think and reason...(glucose is the primary fuel used by your brain).

Know what your baselines are and know what they mean.
If you have unstable blood suagrs communicate that with your partner(s) and always pack your glucometer.

This what I keep in my dungeon and bring with me when I travel.  It's well worth the price.

This is actually a REALLY good bag and for 200.00 that really is a Steal.

I may be ordering one soon just to give as a gift or to keep in the camping gear.

Thank you John This is one I had not seen before.

This is Very true and I agree fully.

What I will say is, If you can ask them a question and get an answer then do what they think is best.

If they are in a sub drop and they get like this and you think that they may also be low then administer OJ but those Glucose Tabs They send my Blood Sugar VERY High so I don't cary them anymore after taking one when stressed (Screws with BGL) I ended up at 582 and My A1C is Always HIger anyway but I usually stand at around 95 to 125.

On the Diabetes end all I can say is TALK to the person who you are playing with about it.

Just Know your Partner and you will know the answer in most situations.

That's a pretty decent kit but I would suggest that most people take the cervical collar out of it.  Unless you know how to size and apply a cervical collar properly, you can do far more harm than good to the c-spine with one.  I also recommend this Dyna Med kit to folks.  It has most everything someone would need in a first-aid situation and with the bright orange bag, there is the added bonus of being very easy to find in a dark corner of a playroom.

GED or some sort of a basic education.

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/20/2008 8:39:03 PM)

Venatrix,
very good advice about the cell phone. We all assume bad things will happen to the sub, but dang if some of Dom/mes are getting long in the tooth as well. Anything could happen.

Nice kit but I wouldn't advise someone who has no training to concider using anything like a OPA or a cervical collar. Although I recommend anyone who has CPR training to get a one way breather valve mask simply because vomit in your mouth really sucks lol.

In my latest CPR class they advised not to use mouth to mouth but to concentrate on the chest compression on the theory that the hemoglobin contains a goodly supply of O2 and the really important thing was to get it to the cells

Sorry for not reading the entire thread and seeing if this was already supplied, but here is a link to a booklet by Jay Wiseman on Dungeon Emergencies and Supplies.  With content to help with treatment;

Floggings4You -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/21/2008 9:54:40 AM)

To this I would just add that I keep My cell-phone charger in My toy-bag, and I always make sure that My cell is fully charged before play.

My First Aid Kit contains the following: EMT scissors, antibiotic ointment, medicated skin lotion, bandages, gauze, bandage tape, cigarette lighter, epi-pen, toothpicks, aspirin/Tylenol/Advil, mints (not sugar-free), peroxide, isopropyl alcohol, Q-tips, nail scissors, nail clippers, tweezers, and a needle and thread.

I always carry bottled water and snack crackers (of some kind) in My toy bag, too.

Fast reply -

An emergency disaster kit is a good idea.  Each area has different natural disasters; toronados, hurricanes, fire, earthquakes, etc.  So you should have one in your residence and in all your vehicles.

For BD/DS/SM a travel first aid kit is a necessity and several posters here have listed the basic contents.  Definately follow up with First Aid and CPR classes every year to keep your certificate up to date.  And the CPR training has changed over the years.  You can find much of what you need at a drug store, medical supply store and a Army & Navy Surplus.

Quick question for Steel -

What are a 511 Tool and a 12-in-1 Rescue Tool ?
Are those similar to a Swiss Army Knife?

This is a 511 tool

And a 12 in 1 tool is the Gerber... Think Swiss Army Knife with Pliers attached.

Well, actually, considering that you didn't finish a full complete sentence, moreover get to an actual point...I'm having a hard time responding to the question that you never actually asked.

EMT scissors

Yup,they have a blunted tip that can get behind a binding or rope.

I have a pair of the "Lister" type, which are drop forged(instead of the stamped w/ plastic handles)I also have a bunch of the cheap-o ones.

http://www.allheart.com/bandage-scissors.html

Don`t play without them.

The blunt end was first used to limit the cutting of flesh, until other use's came to be like yours.

gothicbisub -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/21/2008 6:29:19 PM)

You never want to put anything in the unconscious person’s mouth..no liquids, paste’s , anything due to chocking hazard. Hopefully someone gets to them before they get that low. :)

CraZYWiLLiE -> RE: BDSM EMT kit? (4/21/2008 6:39:25 PM)

Cheaperthandirt has good deals, I usually have on hand the usual, plus sutchers, hemostats, and do not forget, tampons, and pads, they are great for absorbing fluids.

I carry most everything mentioned so far.  I may have missed it if someone has mentioned these, but I didn't see them:  Steri-strips (wound closures), Nexaband (skin glue), sutures and a suture scissor (because I know how to use them), and a ring cutter.  Won't cut through a thick cock ring, but will be able to cut a ring off a finger if there's swelling or a finger gets jammed.  I really liked adding the latter recently, as it could save a trip to the ER.
