I like to play to Kid Rock...high energy, lots of attitude. BTW, I am 50 years old.

This doesn't seem to be based on anything, and the whole thread has devolved to personal musical interests.  Why didn't this thread get moved to Polls and Random Stupidity...?

standupshaking -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/8/2008 10:43:13 PM)

I woulda thot musical tastes would gravitate towards murky pounding techno....but I guess it's just me. I love it and minimal and as heavy as it comes, whips and bass yeahilovetechno

Cyis75 -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 6:21:45 AM)

If you had a look at our iPod playlists you'd be hard pressed to identify it into any easily categorized stereotype... Our taste in music is so eclectic that it crosses pretty much every genre of music you could think of. I've even had co-workers ask me what I'm listening to and when I tell them they go "Who's that?" because it's not something recent.

Justme696 -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 8:25:56 AM)

mmm death metal, hardcore, doom.....and some songs of other types of music ( I try all)
aslong it is hard and has heavy sounding guitars in it

fluffyswitch -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 8:52:40 AM)

i don't have a set type, though if it did it wouldn't have to do with someone being a social darwinist or not (and the op has an interesting definition of it btw, which only encompasses a part of an intellectual movement thought dead by large sections of the academic community). i listen to everything including polka and manson, and i'm sure i probably have a playlist with both. i'm waiting for manson to cover the clarinet polka. then i would happy.

ELMuerte -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 9:41:34 AM)

Don't be so narrow minded just because that is a very obvious scene. So its easy to find a club with "bat night" and find kinnky people rocking out to KMFDM and Combichrist. I wouldnt assume its more then an interest and a subculture dirrectly  - and not so understatedly" BDSM associated. Metal also has deep seeded bondage overtones with the whole leather and chains thing which was started by Iron Maden. The heavy sound and pulsating hard beats match the ethos of the bondage culture as well.

But if that's the only music you like in the whole world you're either 15 years old or a moron.

Brother you KNOW don't you? Your tastes run very simililar to my mine! From Free Jazz and improv i favour: Albert Ayler; Archie Shepp; Coltrane; Ornette; Anthony Braxton; Derek Bailey and John Zorn to name but a few!

<smiles> nice stuff. I've currently been delving into Eric Dolphy, having picked up Iron Man for the first time (actually because of the infamous Vaughn Bode review). It's one of those albums which bears repeated listening just to parse out its many complexities. I'll be picking up more Dolphy soon.

Dudes! I didn't expect any fellow free jazzbos here. I love Eric Dolphy, especially when he plays bass clarinet.

Have you read "The House That Trane Built"? It's an excellent history of Impulse records and Bob Thiele.

badprofessor -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 10:18:53 AM)

I listen to every style and genre of music from all places and all eras with the exception of most traditional European classical music. I used to DJ a lot and still collect records, but the dominant styles are:

Jazz
Reggae and all forms of Jamaican music
Funk, Soul, Rare Grooves
Most Latin styles
Country and Western

When I'm feeling wistful and teary about my misspent youth, I'll break out my collection of late 70's Canadian punk rock 45's.

Viridana -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 10:40:10 AM)

I listen to everything, classical, swing jazz, old acid rock, enya-style music... you name it. Heavy metal is still on top though if I desperately had to choose one genre

MrRodgers -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 11:18:30 AM)

There is no such 'taste' that one could attribute to the the 'bdsm' community. It would be no different than any other 'community.' Music for me is simply in the performance...what do I see/hear. (note: 'scene' music as a subject would also be no different)

Also, at live performances or on the boom box...the performer's life...politics or opinion does not change the music in performance. Affect it...maybe but I don't care, it's what I hear that counts.

Some performers and performances are better than others for any number of reasons. Musicians, their music and performances are it for me just what I hear or see in my community.

amadeus77 -> RE: MUSICAL TASTE IN THE BDSM COMMUNITY (2/9/2008 11:28:34 AM)

Oh, Wagner! Musicologists still argue over what key his Overture to Tristan und Isolde is written in. In his time, women swooned over the lushness of his music --  and that was (presumably) without a flogger!

In late 1975 someone handed me a copy of KISS ALIVE!. I looked at the cover and rolled my eyes. I put the album on and listened to it in its entirety and I was hooked. That was the day I learned to never again judge a musician based on their appearance or political standing or for any other reason than their music.

Hell, I even enjoy Don Henley.[;)]

Shit, I thought I was the only person who even knew who Boyd Rice was!

Anyhow, Cramps, ok, but Zappa? Totally dodgy. Here's an essay that says it better than I ever could: http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/214/

Portentous.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/portentous

So these witless and politically dodgy characters have great import, are momentous, meaningful and significant.

I suppose the same could be said of George W. Bush.

Or did you mean to use the word "pretentious"?
