Master has decided that drinking 4 liters of mountain dew daily is bad for my kidneys. So i'm trying to quit and have got down to one glass per day without the withdrawal headaches by drinking tea instead. i don't like water, i'm always thirsty and want a sweet taste to whatever i''m drinking. any thoughts on helpful substitutes?

Did He give you a time limit?  If not, try cutting down a glass at a time. one day drink, lets say, 10 glasses, then the next 9 and on down.
Have you tried sweet tea? Here in the south, it is so sweet, one could stand a spoon up in the tea for all the sugar they put in it.  And if you are always thirsty and crave sweet, have you got tested for diabetis?
my Dominant wants me to quite smoking, now i am addicted to breath mints and gum. LOL, something in those will end up causing cancer, just you watch.

[:)]Damn, that's a LOT of Mountain Dew! [:-]

You might try good old-fashioned Kool Aid.  It's cheap and fruity.  (I'm assuming sugar consumption isn't a concern, lol)

(Have you had your blood sugar checked anytime recently?  Craving sweets and constant thirst are major symptoms of diabetes.)

edited to add:  Oops, read the thread above me after I posted this....good call, NC!

Those crystal light go packets are pretty handy; no caffeine; no sugar...and you may fnd your threshold is less than one pack per bottle of water.

Some of the flavored seltzers are not too bad; have a crisp clean taste...again without the sugar or caffeine.

Also you may actually beome less thirsty if you start drinking less fluid.

DomMeinCT -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 4:33:04 PM)

Yes, and those Crystal Light/4C/Wal-Mart brand packets come in tons of flavors, so you won't get bored.

GreedyTop -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 5:14:31 PM)

There's also Propel water flavoring /bottled water.  I like the berry flavor :)

I used to drink literally nothing but Mt Dew. It was normal for me to go through a 12pk a day (or more).  I'm down to a ilttle over a litre a day now.  And I have started drinking more water.  Thus the Propel.

windchymes -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 6:31:44 PM)

One cup of coffee gives me jitters and palpitations....if I drank that much Dew in a day, I'd be....well....I'd be this guy....[sm=gaah.gif]  lol

christine1 -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 6:36:05 PM)

i used to drink a 2 liter bottle of  Dr. Pepper a day, but my kidneys hurt a lot.   it was hard to cut down but i did finally, now i might have 2 cans a month or so, i lost my taste for it.  although now i drink half a pot of coffee every morning but i do drink about a gallon of water a day.  sometimes drinking it cold helps if you don't like the taste...good luck.

KatyLied -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 6:37:37 PM)

That is a ton of Mountain Dew.  I hope you are withdrawing slowly though, because quitting caffeine cold turkey can cause rebound headaches.  I don't know how you feel about artificial flavoring, you can get packets of propel and flavor your water, I like the kiwi-strawberry flavor.  I need caffeine in my life and make my own sweetened iced tea.  If you are going to substitute it's best to plan ahead and prepare your drinks and take them with you, so you aren't reaching for more bad stuff throughout the day.

DesFIP -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 7:27:04 PM)

I'd switch to one sprite to one Dew for now. You really don't want caffeine withdrawal headaches. Wait a couple/three days and make it two Sprites per Dew, etc. And then switch to diet sprite. And then one sprite per one water or Crystal Lite. Etc.

abcbsex -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 8:14:52 PM)

caffeine headaches are the worst. I'm having them right now, actually. The only thing that helps is excedrin, which guess what! has caffeine. So going cold turkey probably isn't the best idea, I like Des's idea

phoenixinchains -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 9:47:10 PM)

i have a family history of type 2 diabeties, and have been tested, and have perfectly normal sugar levels after an overnight fast.

i have been drinking sweetend tea. all my family is southern and "tea" means 3/4 cup of sugar per gallon of tea.

the tea has stayed off the headaches. i tried cold turkey a few years back,,, before i understood that caffiene was an addiction and more than a bad habit. caffiene is a whole nother battle, for now i'm trying to get off the carbonated stuff.

i used to have horrid migraines before i started drinking the soda like i had been, drinking the soda seemed to keep the migrains at rest.

mountain dew has been refered to as  "sara's nector" likening me unto being a humming bird, becuase my resting heart beat is 110 beats. i've had ekg's and i'm fine, i just have a really fast heart.

Master has no dead line, He only wishes that i drink less than a liter per day in the near future.

so far, i'm liking the idea of kool-aid the best. artificial sweeteners taste funny to me.

Thanks to all~

YourhandMyAss -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 9:58:29 PM)

I'm not sure that koolaid is all that good for pe ople either, plus it'll dye your mouth and anything else that goes in your mouth the color of the drink, kind of funny if you like that kind of thing.

I'd go with clearly canaidian drinks their flavored waters with no fructose and no corn syroup, both ingrediants that ar eNOT at all good for you. I will also second crystal light on the go packets, and their cheaper counter part lipton to go tea packets.

phoenixinchains -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/1/2008 10:04:25 PM)

isn't Clearly Canadian carbonated?

FlamingRedhead -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/2/2008 10:05:04 AM)

I've been banned from drinking Mountain Dew (my favorite) or any other caffeine by a cardiologist, a gynecologist and an internist.  Why?  I began having bladder infections every few months which progressed to kidney infections (not because I wasn't getting the bladder infections treated early enough, though) and then began having pre-syncopal spells (almost fainting, profuse sweating and nausea) from heart palpitations.  I still drink sodas and coffee now and then, but I try to stick to decaf.

CalifChick -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/2/2008 10:54:55 AM)

I would think the caffeine would be harder on your kidneys than the carbonation. Or is that just an old wives tale?

Cali

YourhandMyAss -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/2/2008 11:33:04 AM)

Oops yeah it is.  however you could let it go flat before drinking it lol. OP Did the carbination thing count for ALL carbinated drinks even flavored waters or just soda's?

ask them at some point to run an A1c test...it is possible to be a diabetic (or have some form of insulin resitance) and to have normal fasting sugars.

Exactly what I was going to say. [:)]  A normal fasting blood sugar isn't conclusive for anything except that your blood sugar is normal that morning.  If you tell your doctor about your thirst and sweets cravings, he would probably investigate it further, if only for the peace of mind.  They still do old-fashioned glucose tolerance tests, too.  You'll love the sweet drink they'll give you [;)]

sub4hire -> RE: breaking bad habits (5/2/2008 2:29:13 PM)

Gatorade just came out with a lower sugar variety.  It's called G2.  Still sweeet.  I'm the opposite I can't stand the taste of sweet in many drinks.
I'd stay away from the phony sugars...long term use or just too much can have negative affects on a person.

Like the gum, if it is sugar free..studies have already shown it causes certain types of cancer.
Of course everything causes cancer...I think we may be ok if we eat it in moderation.
