I want to find programs that will give my BF health care and not cost an arm and a leg, and so far I'm not sure where to look. He works full time he gets a bit over minimum wage. His job has health insurance plans but it'd take over half his paycheck an would leave us pretty much unable to afford the rest of lifes costs like gas rent and food. Any one know of any Sacramento based programs that will help with medical coverage? I'd like him to have coverage, not just a walk in or a free clinic. I'd also like it to be in t he veeeeeeeeeery low end range of price. You know, instead of 70 or 80 or more dollars.

If he has any health issues at all, I highly suggest taking the one offered through his work. Although they have talked about passing a law regulating health care cards in CA which promise deep discounts, but often don't offer them, it has not been passed at this time. If they do pass it, you can pay $120 per month for one of the cards, and the government will be in charge of regulating it. What you don't want is to find out he has a health issue when you don't have insurance, because you will have a heck of a time (if you're able to at all) getting those things covered again. (and it will be much more expensive if you can)

blushes I talked to an insurance agent an he said since James has pre exsiting mental conditions, he'll be rejected for any program he tries to get:( The one at work may not be to to expensive but we're a severly limited budget, we barely have enough for gas groceries and rent an other stuff as ti is some months:(

Yep. That's what you want to at all costs avoid. The dreaded pre-existing condition. Being part of the working class and having to choose between health care is a conundrum I am very well familiar with. You almost have to be SO poor you can't afford housing before you can GET healthcare. If he has an extremely low income, sometimes (believe it or not) a public hospital's emergency room is a better option because they have programs to cut most and sometimes all of the costs if you are in a certain income bracket. Listening to people from other countries who have 'guaranteed' health care doesn't make me want to run in that direction either, however. The economy is not strong at this time, and I just think we are going to have to do the best we can. Why don't you call some local clinics and ask them what the heck you are supposed to do? Be nice though. Perhaps someone will have an idea I haven't found.

Every state has some sort of discounted health care. So, in reality we already have a health care program in this country. Thing is, it isn't universal. Nebraska has a law here where if you are a resident for 6 month's, Blue Cross cannot deny pre-existing conditions. Anyway...in California look for MIA. Every county in California has it. It is called Medically Indigent Adults. I found it years ago looking for my sister. She had went to donate blood. They felt a mass in her stomach. I knew it was cancer..so I found her a program before she was diagnosed. The way MIA works is they go off of what you can afford. Some appointments she paid 3 dollars a visit. In the end...she beat it for 5 years. It took her life..and when it re-occured she had well over a million in medical bills to pay. I was her trustee by then. MIA wanted 3 thousand for it all. How come pre exsiting conditions rule you out for most everything? In my case I have insurance even though I have pre exsisting conditions, but maybe that's cause I am on SSI and I am covered for medicare and mediCAL. quote: ORIGINAL: xxblushesxx Yep. Because I think they have to give you medicare and/or medical (not sure though) if you qualify, but no one has to sell you insurance. I used to sell life insurance and cancer coverage, and those pre-existing conditions could either kill a deal, or make it prohibitively expensive. I've got to think it's the same (if not more so) with medical insurance. Thanks sub4hire! I should actually be graduating soon and getting a 'real' job, hopefully working for the government, and I would definitely have healthcare then, but, maybe I could check into this in the meantime.

What happens if you just don't disclose previous conditions, then get re diagnosed by a new dr under this new plan? What keeps people from just doing that then? Not that we're going to do it we're going 100 percent above board.

For MIA it doesn't matter if you have a previous condition or not. They cannot refuse you. I think most companies have a clause where they can refuse to cover you. When we moved here we moved with no jobs. Wanted health coverage so signed up. Doug was turned down, due to extreme height he is 6'6. Strangest reason I've ever heard of. Anyway, it sort of followed us so we ended up going with his works policy and just paid out of our pockets every month until we had insurance here. Pretty sure they would refuse to cover the condition for 6 month's to a year.

We'll look into the MIA thing, he's never tried to get medicare, so I don't know if he qualifies for that or not, and he'll look into his company's insurance program too.

MIA is not medicare. MIA is just health insurance. Its as good of an idea as anybody will ever come up with for universal healthcare in this country. It just isn't through the 50 states.

yeah I understand it's not medicare, but one of MIA's statements on the site , is it's for people who do not qualify for medicare . So the fact we haven't tried to apply for it I don't know if it disqualifies us or not.

YHMA.....do you have health insurance where you work? i know a lot of companies will provide health care for significant others even if they aren't married....

You must be eligible for Medicare to be disqualified. Eligibility for Medicare is due to age or disability. There is a lot of partial truths on this thread, if anyone has any specific questions feel free to ask, I won't claim to be a health insurance expert, but it is what I deal with every day in my work.
