YourhandMyAss -> getting rid of sour stomach faster? when meds not working? (5/7/2008 9:51:07 PM)

Every once in a while I get  what I understand to be gas pressure and bloating, and while I take gas x an it kind of helps the continual need to burp I get the urge to vomit too only the need is there the oh gonna vommit sensation  the stuff feeling like it is rising, is there an even a dry heave or two but no vomiting. This is not related to the cefalexin keflex anti biotic I am taking, it's happend before the pills.

It;s really hurting my stomach and I was wondering if there's anything to maybe induce vomiting, since I am getting the sensation of about to but no action.

Or maybe better yet anything to settle the urge to vomit. someone suggested hot tea but I really am leary of putting more stuff into an already full upset stomach. kind of worry about giving a sour stomach amunition to spew.

I'm leaning more toward prevention being better than treatment.  You don't want to venture down the road of induced vomiting.

You said "full upset stomach"... is your stomach really full?  Have you tried having more smaller meals so that you do not get a full stomach?

Have you done all the things that are typically recommended, such as giving up carbonation, don't use a straw to drink anything, give up foods that give you gas, stay upright after eating, don't wear tight waistbands particularly during or after eating, etc.?

Sucking a hard peppermint candy works to settle the tummy for a lot of people.  When I was pregnant, hard sour lemon candies worked reasonably well for me.

I don't know if it is full or not Cali, it just feels full. prob from the bloating. I had like 4 little  honey bbq chicken wings, that's not usualy enough to make me full. nor is it usualy  a culprit in the sour stomach issue. I also had to have some water to take the gas x and then like 30 mins later I had like 3 sips of luke warm water.

I don't wear tight clothing after eating I am indeed usualy sitting up after eating yes. Normally I don't have the gas pressure an sour stomach problem but I've had it like 4 times this week. some of it could be the antibiotic, at this point I'm not sure how to tell which one is causing it.

CalifChick -> RE: getting rid of sour stomach faster? when meds not working? (5/7/2008 10:24:09 PM)

No, four wings does not sound like a full stomach.  Whenever something goes wrong, you have to examine what you're doing differently.  If the only thing different is a medication, then that is likely the culprit.  The old "when you hear hoofbeats, look for horses not zebras" line of thinking... meaning go with the simplest explanation first.

You may just have to tough it out until you're done with the antibiotic.  I would probably go with as bland of a diet as you can until it's over.  I know honey-bbq sauce is not usually considered spicy, but the tomato and vinegar base could be contributing to the problem. Drink as little as possible when you're having food.  And try the hard peppermint candies.

To derail an episode of nausea, blow out thru your mouth.  Slow, rhythmic blowing.  Breathe in thru your nose, and then actually blow out of your mouth (not just breathe out). When you're blowing, open your mouth just enough to let the air out - maybe about as much as the size of a drinking straw.  If your mouth is watering because you feel a wave of nausea coming, spit that out instead of swallowing it, and keep blowing.  These were some tricks I learned thru 9 months plus two weeks of daily morning sickness.

Thank you for those tips I'll try that when I am getting the need to heave sensations.

If it's to bad I can call the doc an let her know an see what she says.

Speaking as the Queen of Vomiting Stomach Acid, Bile, And All Other Niceties...

I buy bottles of chewable antacid tablets called Titralac from my local Wal-Mart.  They're cheap and not horrible-tasting and do the trick in most cases.

In the rare event that those don't work, CVS has an over-the-counter anti-nausea liquid formula.  If I could put myself on a constant IV drip of it I would, it's a miracle in a bottle.  I've had killer nausea where it feels like I'm going to puke but I can't bring anything up and I'm literally doubled over crying from it, but one dose of the liquid stuff and I'm all better.   It takes about two to five minutes for it to start working on me.

Milk, too.  Milk coats your stomach.  Water tends to sit and make your stomach feel more full and icky.  Also ginger ale and saltines may settle down lesser cases -- they've worked for me in the past, and I've had friends use it as a cure for morning sickness with great success.

Have you tried anything like prilosec or pepcid or nexium? I have the same issues with my stomach as you and my doctor prescribed those...they worked at first but they don't work for me anymore. Pepto works pretty good for me though.

Do you have regular BMs? B/c sometimes constipation can increase the bloating feeling...and if it's bad enough...can cause nausea and all.

Do peptol bismol tablets work for you at all? That's the only thing I've ever had to use.

Ginger has been used for this for centuries. Chop some up, pour boiling water over it, steep it for about 5 mins.
I know putting more stuff into your stomach sounds like a bad idea, but it's very effective.
ALso I'd agree about avoiding acidic foods, esp tomato based ones.

salt usually works for me, maybe some chicken broth or some salty pretzels or crackers....

I use mylanta for sour stomach if we have any or those malox fruit chews. There's no heart burn just a very unhapy gassy and bloated stomach with the need to vomit, and usualy I can only wretch, or it's a very tiny amount of spit.

I never found those to work...pepto works great though. You can usually get a generic brand of it at dollar stores for really cheap too.

Bananas......{No, not the kind that are in pajamas and coming down the stairs}...... Eating two or three of them at every meal will help absorb the acid and make you feel like you have more energy.

I vote for ginger as well, you can get ginger tea also, it really helps.

three bananas at every meal would be almost a days worth of calories LOL they're about 110 calories each...and you're only supposed to have 400-500 calories at each meal. LOL

mistoferin -> RE: getting rid of sour stomach faster? when meds not working? (5/9/2008 5:53:14 AM)

Ginger, Papaya Enzyme (found at health food stores) and Fennel (looks like celery and tastes yummy) are very good for digestion and calming an upset tummy. I also make a salad of sliced cucumber, onion, water, lemon juice and salt that will work quickly to calm your stomach after eating. However, remedies should not be considered as solutions. You have said before that your diet isn't the greatest. Working towards changing that overall will probably be your best bet.

MissMagnolia -> RE: getting rid of sour stomach faster? when meds not working? (5/9/2008 5:58:35 AM)

It sounds very simple, but I always have used just a warm cup of peppermint tea for this problem. It's very safe and I used to give it to my son when he was little. Just add boiling water and leave the bag in until the liquid cools to warm. Peppermint has been used forever for digestive tract problems.

Whichever of the suggestions works for you, I hope the problem clears up soon. It's very uncomfortable and I do sympathise.

I use milk sometimes as well. Just drink half a glass.
