Howdy everyone.

I was wondering if anyone knew any natural remedies for nightmares. I've looked it up on google and can't find any decent sources of information, so I turn to the wonderful people of CM. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried meditation before you go to bed? Try doing this make going to bed a ritual. Take your time with it nurture yourself with comfy things like a hot bath with lavender oil. Before you lay down tell yourself repeatedly that you will sleep well with no nightmares and awake feeling rested energized and clear. Do some deep breathing when you do this. Breath from the diaphragm in through the nose and out of the mouth. Stick to it for as long as it takes. If the nightmares continue go to a specialist who deals with sleeping disorders. If the nightmares are a result of any kind of trauma abuse etc. Then you will probably need to see a therapist. A combination of Valerian root tea good lavender oil and meditation should help but like I said if the nightmares are a result of trauma or abuse you need to see a therapist.Good luck

Drinking chamomile tea also helps.
When one of my son's was little he had issues with nightmares - we found that leaving a soft blue nightlight on helped a great deal.

I listen to a sleep tape some times when I am having trouble going to sleep. It is called "Deep Sleep Every Night" by Glenn Harrold. It is rather cheezy, but it seems to work wonderfully, and I always sleep well after listening to it. I don't know if it would help with nightmares, but it does put me in a peacefull mindset before drifting off. It is sort of a guided meditation to do in bed.

This site, http://www.dreamwisdom.info/library/nightmare_remedies_dw.htm, talks about a few ways to stop the nightmares.  It may be helpful.  It's possible you're experiencing a personal crisis or are overly stressed with work or school which is leading to the nightmares.  Depending on how long they have been going on, I may talk to someone professional about getting help and getting to the bottom of them.  Any kind of sleep deprivation makes you feel awful physically, which leads to you feeling terrible mentally ... which isn't going to help the nightmares, so I'm thinking the valarian like someone else mentioned, or even taking Melatonin like I do for insomnia (3 mgs. at bedtime) which would possibly help you get a decent night's rest which may help you mentally overcome the nightmares.

It sounds to me like it could be a vicious cycle - nightmare leads to sleeplessness which makes it difficult to keep the nightmares at bay.

you may want to take a look at what you are eating/drinking before bedtime.  as a lifelong nightmare-haver, there's a few things that I avoid at bedtime because I know they will cause real screamers:  milk, cheese, any dairy product basically.

also, I find that for some weird reason, if I fall asleep on my back, it's another way to guarantee nightmares.

good luck and sweet dreams.

while the op is a woman, it's OK to recommend lavender.

Men should NOT drink lavendar or use lavendar oil excessively.  The same is true for sage because both of those plants have too many plant estrogens and using it everyday can mess with a man's hormones especially boys and young men.

Here is a safe remedy for nightmares:
a tsp of orangeflower water (from a spanish grocery) right before bed.  It comes in a brown bottle.  It's the only one with the right strain of orange.  I think it's called agua destilada de azahar.

I would love to see where you got your information on lavender and sage from. Its not something that I have heard off in any of my herb med classes. In fact just last week I put lavender in to a mixture for a man and there were no contraindications for its use in male patients.

If you're having a nightmare that doesn't seem connected to a message or event, it's likely to be caused by some sort of chemical before sleep (either too much or a lack thereof).  Really watch what you eat within a 4-6 hour window prior to sleep - that includes medicines.  You might want to keep a journal to see if there's any link between something you ate and a following nightmare.  Some huge triggers can be (but aren't limited to) caffine, alcohol, stimulants such as hot sauce etc.  I have insomnia myself - it was recommended that 6 hours before bed I limit myself to water and one cup of herbal tea.  Blegh.

Then there's nice things to promote peaceful sleep.  Combos of chamomile, ginger and mint teas have been known to calm folks down.  Also, for the more restless, there's valerian root and melatonin - though be careful!  If your body just isn't ready to rest, both can trigger *nasty* headaches.

Finally, a soothing environment can aid in nightmares.  Sometimes just a simple change in the color of light is enough to distract a busy brain into calmer rest.  There's little pink and blue lights sold for a baby's room - give one a try (I tend to sleep better in red-ish lights than bluish lights, but whatever works).  I also invested in a light made from rock salt.  A small bulb is placed inside a hunk of raw salt.  The heat is said to release ions which promote a soothing effect.  It may be BS, but it's pretty, I like it, and who knows?  It may actually work.   A sound machine or fan may also be of use.  Some soothing noise that repeats through the night may calm the mind or at least re-direct the dreams into something a bit less threatening.  Ever think of a small indoor fountain?  Homedics makes a whole line of them.  Falling water is *fantastic* for deep sleep.

Of course, none of these things will work if your nightmares stem from an issue the brain is trying to work through.  If that's the cause, the only way I know to divert the dream (besides lucid dreaming, which is an entirely different thread!) is to address the issue at hand.

Either way, good luck.

Have you sought any professional help for the nightmares?  The reason I ask is, I work with a woman who said she had horrible nightmares, ones that she couldn't wake up from, and that were very vivid and terrifying.  She said her doctor determined that her brain didn't produce enough serotonin and the nightmares were a reaction from that.  I can't remember what medication she said she takes now, but the nightmares have stopped.

I know you were looking for natural remedies, and I don't have an answer for that.  But my thought was that if your nightmares were severe enough, a natural remedy might not be enough.  I hope that's not the case, though.

First, thanks everyone for your awesome advice. It's been very helpful!

windchymes-

Nope, haven't been to see a shrink. I will if they keep up for too long and nothing helps. I'm not too worried about it. I just moved so that may have something to do with it. Thanks for your advice though.

I see we are treating symptoms rather than causes still.

Psychological and hormonal factors work together in ways that medical science still does not understand fully. Their interaction may never be understood.

If for a time in one's life recurrent nightmares occur, this could be a sign of something in the diet. Believe it or not it could be described as an allergic reaction to some substance, and it does happen.

However one must realize that they were most likely exposed to the substance for most of their life and it has only now become a problem. What does that tell us ?

Well people do change their diet sometimes and that can cause problems. But others change and have no problems, why is that you suppose ?

Nightmares are caused by thoughts and feelings that you can't or won't bring to the surface and express. They are almost always something you have sublimkinated in your mind, pretty much ignoring it. Your subconcious tries to tell you not to ignore it and it does it through dreams. In other words, something is wrong somewhere.

I don't care what you eat, you will not have nightmares if you don't have issues. There is something going on. Of that I have no doubt. What is the content of these nightmares ? That is the most telling. Even if chemical agents caused it, what is in your mind is what dreamt it. Other people ingest these substances no ? Do they all have nightmares ? I doubt it.

So just what happens in these dreams/nightmares ? And remember that dreams and nightmares are one and the same. You and you alone decide what is a nightmare. You want a drug to keep you from having nightmares ? I would bet it keeps you from having dreams as well. Do you want that ?

More later, company.

It's simple:
Sometimes major changes, such as moving or the illness or death of a loved one, can cause stress that leads to nightmares.

It takes the brain a long time to adjust to moving. Our brains have to have the time to adapt to the new mass confusion of information and this causes a form of stress.

I find carbs late at night can also cause bad dreams. Pizza is famous for causing nightmares for many of my friends.

Taking some multiple B vites in the morning or afternoon can help the brain function much better under the kind of stress that moving causes.

'Nightmares are disturbing, visual dream sequences that occur in your mind and wake you up from your sleep, are very common and can begin at any age. Nightmares are an indication of a fear that needs to be acknowledged and confronted and are a normal response to unacceptable levels of fear and stress. They are emotionally disturbing dreams that occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and provoke feelings of fear, terror, distress or extreme anxiety.'

Sweet Dreams Op.

Sounds like yours are probably just from stress and moving.  Moving is the pits, lol.

The nightmares that my co-worker had were really dark and vivid ones, where she would be screaming in her sleep repeatedly, and she said she even was aware in the dream that it was a nightmare and that she needed to wake up, and she would say to her boyfriend "Wake me up!" in between screaming.  She also was extremely hard to wake up...he'd shake her vigorously and hit her (gently) to get her awake, but it would take 5-10 minutes of yelling her name and shaking her to get her awake and out of the nightmare.

I'm glad yours aren't like that....just wanted to mention it.

Try and realise it is a dream when you are having the nightmare. Try and look at your hands during the dream and you can take full control.
I've been lucid dreaming for a couple of years now and you can change nightmares into really great dreams.

I read an article somewhere the other day on dreams.  I don't recall where exactly.  We get far too many magazines...anyway.

It said smell is a factor with dreams.  Good smells will actually help you to have better dreams.

So look up dreams and smell.  It may give you some insight.

I find that I dream less when I give myself a busy day added with exercise and I set my alarm to where I get a max of six hours sleeping time.

Otherwise, you could also seek out an authintic Native American Dream Catcher which can be made and given to you as a gift.

I would recommend finding a book called: Dream Power, by Ann Faraday
Learning to control your dreams helps in learning to take control of your nightmares by becoming aware of them while you are sleeping.

You can train yourself to be active in a nitemare, and start asking questions to the participants in the dream. Find a good book on lucid dreaming. I didn't have any problem learning it, and have discovered a lot of valuable information
