If you're having a nightmare that doesn't seem connected to a message or event, it's likely to be caused by some sort of chemical before sleep (either too much or a lack thereof). Really watch what you eat within a 4-6 hour window prior to sleep - that includes medicines. You might want to keep a journal to see if there's any link between something you ate and a following nightmare. Some huge triggers can be (but aren't limited to) caffine, alcohol, stimulants such as hot sauce etc. I have insomnia myself - it was recommended that 6 hours before bed I limit myself to water and one cup of herbal tea. Blegh. Then there's nice things to promote peaceful sleep. Combos of chamomile, ginger and mint teas have been known to calm folks down. Also, for the more restless, there's valerian root and melatonin - though be careful! If your body just isn't ready to rest, both can trigger *nasty* headaches. Finally, a soothing environment can aid in nightmares. Sometimes just a simple change in the color of light is enough to distract a busy brain into calmer rest. There's little pink and blue lights sold for a baby's room - give one a try (I tend to sleep better in red-ish lights than bluish lights, but whatever works). I also invested in a light made from rock salt. A small bulb is placed inside a hunk of raw salt. The heat is said to release ions which promote a soothing effect. It may be BS, but it's pretty, I like it, and who knows? It may actually work. A sound machine or fan may also be of use. Some soothing noise that repeats through the night may calm the mind or at least re-direct the dreams into something a bit less threatening. Ever think of a small indoor fountain? Homedics makes a whole line of them. Falling water is *fantastic* for deep sleep. Of course, none of these things will work if your nightmares stem from an issue the brain is trying to work through. If that's the cause, the only way I know to divert the dream (besides lucid dreaming, which is an entirely different thread!) is to address the issue at hand. Either way, good luck.
