This is what i do:  i go to the manufacturer's web site for the new drug, look around, and find the section for "Medical Professionals".

It takes me a long time to read the page, because i have to google so much medical jargon, but this is where the manufacturer explains how many studies were done, what side effects and adverse reactions were found, and in what percentage of test subjects.

This information is far superior to what manufaturers put on those printed materials they send to pharmacists.  This is where you'll find out that some adverse events included things like death, blindness, weight gain, kidney failure and so forth.

This gives you a much better basis for a decision.  Frankly, i won't take any drug that might cause death, never mind blindness or weight gain.

Well, Aspirin can cause death, and so can peanuts.  I do read the prescribing recommendations, but I don't expect to base my entire evaluation of a medication on that.  Birth control pills can cause spotting, bloating, blood clots, and a bunch of other stuff.  Some of that stuff is very serious for some women.  But for me, the biggest thing is that despite the mostly minor potential of some of the side-effects, it still causes me not to have a screaming brat I can't afford and don't have the patience for.  No medication is perfect, some risks are very serious, but there are still times when the benefit is more important.  Alarmism doesn't help anyone.
