I've been assured by people who have expelled both, that there is nothing to envy about severe kidney stones.

Ah gees.  A bunch of years ago my ex husband had a stomach ache that quickly turned into unbearable pain that had him absolutely doubled over.  He's this big motherfucker, 6'1, 235 lbs of nothing but brawn, and here he was completely helpless in unbearable pain.  It took my mother and I ( a couple of little 5 foot bitches ) to hold him up and get him into the car.  He could hardly walk, the pain was that bad.   We had no clue what the hell was happening to him.  At any rate, we got him into the car an I ran his ass to the nearest hospital emergency room; a ride I'll never forget as long as I live.  He was moaning in such horrific pain that  I thought he was dying.
If I remember correctly, they put him on morphine.  And after some tests, it turned out to be this little friggin kidney stone that he eventually passed.  And we couldn't believe such a tiny thing could cause so much pain.  Anyway, the urologist told him that most people who have had kidney stones will most likely get them again at some point.  One of the biggest preventions is to drink plenty of water on a regular basis.
And speaking of child birth, we were told that the pain of passing a kidney stone is supposedly worse than that of labor and delivery, or at least comparable.   I find that hard to believe because if I hadn't been attached to tubes and machines and monitors when I was in labor I surely would have jumped out the fucking window after about the 17th hour of that friggin torture.  At least the kidney stone thing doesn't last as long.

FR:  The first one I had was the day of my 40th Birthday...and I began passing it about 4 hours after a marathon session with my slave.  I just put it down to God wreaking His vengance upon me, and prepared to die.   About 3 am, when I really couldn't take the pain any more, I opted to take a cab to the hospital.  There the jovial nurse assured me that (1) I was, like all men, a big baby (2)  absent some fairly rare complications, one would not die from a stone, notwithstanding how much one WANTED to die and (3) it would probably pass in the morning.  She then gave me a cocktail of Demerol, toradol and something else, and I drifted off to some sort of peaceful sleep.   The next morning, the pain was gone.   And a few hours later, so was the stone.

Once you pass your first KS, you can do two things:   Have a procedure known as an IVP, which "lights up" your kidneys and allows some radiologist to count how many more stones are visible in there (I digress:  When you think about that job, do you wonder why they make $300K +/year? )   You then can go thru the rest of your natural life waiting for x number of stones to move down into your ureter and cause you to wish you were dead, again.  OR you can pay umpteen gazillioin bucks (because last I checked, insurance didn't cover all the expense) and have the little buggers lithotripted out of existence.   Sound waves pulverize your stones -- I would recommend Mott the Hoople, turned up to 11.   OR you can choose not to know.

The second thing you can do is try to "catch" the stone.   This involves peeing into a catch basin of some sort, and then pouring the pee thru a special funnel with a very tiny screen in the neck to allow you to find (and treasure) the stone.  There are special laboratories that will analyze the stone and tell you what nasty things you put in your body that help it make stones.  This means they will tell you to avoid coffee and pickles.  and cheese.   and even if you do, it is no guarantee there arent' a dozen more of the the little buggers waiting to flatten your ass.  I suspect catching the stone is great fun if you are into water sports, ...or if you like to play Mr. Wizard with your own whiz.  Or you can pretend what you don't know won't hurt you.  I never could catch the damn thing, anyway.

I had another stone about a year later, and one about two years after that.  Neither were apparently devine retribution for spending a dozen sweaty and delightful hours with some lovely girl, although one did strike (and fortunately get passed) a few days before my first Supreme Court Oral Argument...God has a funny sense of humor, eh?   Since then (about 8 years) I've been stone free.   And often stone sober...but NEVER as sober as when those bastards hit.  Good luck, AZ.

E.

(in all seriousness...it hurts like a bastard.   Try to sleep.  Drink a ton of water.   If the stone doesn't pass after a couple of days, you may need to see the doc again, because there are serious problems if it causes the ureter to block up or get infected.  And, Aileen, miss smarty...errr....pants.  Women are more prone to both having kidney stones and NOT passing them easily.  So don't smart off about it.)

Evility -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 2:55:59 AM)

As bad as you feel now - pray they don't have to go in and get it. I've passed all of mine including one in August 2003 (that I saved) that should easily garner me a place in the Kidney Stone Hall of Fame. I've heard a few stories about the docs going in to retrieve them. Makes rolling around on the bed wishing you were dead seem like a walk on the beach.

Good luck. Lots of water - now and for the rest of your life. Forget having it tested - waste of time. Plenty of water will keep your urine diluted and help prevent them no matter which type you get.

divi -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 3:12:11 AM)

I get them and they do suck...

They can zap them out and go in and get them .. which i've had both done and both bite..

Good luck and drink drink drink lots of water

Ouch ouch you have my full sympathy! I had kidney stones when I was about 23 and yup it was agony but it did pass fairly quickly.When I hit 40 it was gallstones that I ignored for a year, til my gallbladder burst. Hundreds of stones! I don't recommend the 'ignore' course of action.Now I'm nearly positive I have saliva gland stones which are just as painful as the other stones lemme tellya. Fucking pain. Many stones can be destroyed by laser if they are small enough.I've read from several different sources of a link between stones and too much calcium deposits so you may want to check that too. Water water water. Guzzle that water.Remember once they pass the worst is over, good luck because I do know how awful it is.{hugs}

xxblushesxx -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 7:09:24 AM)

I've had gallstones (not kidney) and I've had babies.
If I had to pick the lesser of two evils I'd have a baby. (But then again, the side effects last at least 18 years...)

RCdc -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 9:22:05 AM)

hi AZ

I have just got out of hosptial a couple of weeks from the same.  Having had two children, I can reassure you and everyone else that NOTHING IS AS PAINFUL as having that damn stone force it's way out.  Not even childbirth.

I didn't know it was a KS at the time.  .AndFuck.  I thought I was going to die.

There was I on a friday night, all smiling because Darcy had decided on a new house and the future was all shiney.  And then, bam - it felt as though someone had taken a hot metal poker and thrust it into my lower back and was slowly twisting it around and into the vicinity of my crotch.  How you drove I cannot fathom!  I called Darcy who jumped into his car to my local ER.  I called an ambulance who turned up and took me .lightsandsirens. to the ER.

I had gas and air.  I had morphine.  I had fucking anything they would give me.  And Darcy has a hand that is now extremely squished from me holding onto him sooooooooooo hard, complete with nail marks.  I had the glow in the dark kidney flush(which gives the strangest feeling - especially when followed up by the 'coldness' of the morphine.
And yes, they went in for it.  And I had a stent for days.
.ow.ow.ow.

They recommend water - lots of it.  Although I am already a huge water flusher - and so cannot recommend it myself.  They still suggest it works.  I'm not so convinced.

it is a sad fact of life that most of us have these (as well as gall stones). I have heard that it is worse for a man then for a woman (with no disrespect to the women intented), it is a matter of the physical anatomy.

As a student nurse i remember arguing with a male patient (about 6'5...300 pounds of solid 'tough'). He passed the stone into a strainer and it was about half the size of a pencil eraser. He tried to convince me that the REAL one...golfball sized...had yet to make its appearance.

burningdesires47 -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 9:49:38 AM)

Lucky me, I had a kidney stone a few months ago... I thought I was dying. My physician figured out exactly how much pain I could stand that day, and finally believes that fibromyalgia is not caused by a low pain threshold. I had a stone the size of a small pea--which means it was HUGE--and I still drove myself to her office and then to the ER. That's also when she figured out some of my occasional extreme abdominal pain that lasts for days on end is really from kidney stones... OMG. I tell you what, I'm allergic to morphine, vicodin makes me see smurfs and dancing purple elephants, all narcotics make me constipated (try passing a stone AND being constipated!! FUN TIMES!!!)... there's not a lot they can do for my pain when I have them, so I just have to ride it out. 3 days of that thing going thru my system, slowly scraping up the walls of every tube it passed thru, 3 days of agonizing, constant pain (though admittedly they totally sedated me a few times), played cards and read books and would sit there silently with tears streaming down my face... and then two weeks of recovery including a serious UTI that thankfully didn't spread to my kidneys.

My mom had a kidney stone once. Admittedly she had easy labor but she said she's take natural labor and childbirth to that. My grandma has them too. My dad was a 16lb baby in a 100lb woman. She preferred that natural childbirth with 2 days of "active" labor and 8 hours of pushing to kidney stones.

They tested mine. I get the special ones that don't respond to dietary changes. And this kidney stone showed up a month after I had been admonished for drinking too much water. I still do, so obviously water doesn't help... 4 different docs now straight up told me, drinking extra water doesn't necessarily prevent it from making stones, because your body can only clear impurities so fast--all extra water does is dilute the urine and make you pee more often, not more stuff. Though it MAY help the stone pass faster once you have one. But they say to drink more water because so many Americans don't drink enough, and since there's so little else they can do, it makes the patient feel like they're doing something.

I'm VERY sorry to hear what you're going thru. Take the happy pills. Hopefully they can do something about yours.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 10:04:56 AM)

I thought they used ultra sound to break these up and facilitate a quicker 'passing'?

RCdc -> RE: Kid Kneee stones So non consensual (5/28/2008 10:15:08 AM)

They can use vibration if it is in the kidney still, but if it is stuck in the tube, they remove 'manually'.

sometimes this actually makes it worse...instead of passing one big one you are not passing several small ones. Even the small ones are a nightmare.
