I love love love love love the man's Harley.  I just got back from Bike Week down in Myrtle Beach and was in heaven.  Surrounded by about 250,000 Harleys.  Nothing like that sound when they all rev up at the same time.  I was soooo wet the entire time.

The sound thing is weird. I mean, I get it. Harley's are loud and throaty and people love that. What's weird, though, is that the big noise is supposed to indicate high performance potential and, therefore, an associated amount of badassedness. But that's bogus and that is what I find a bit weird. Harley's are dogs. Lawnmowers. Diesels. You could spend several grand to build a hot one but it won't be able to run with a good, bone stock Yamaha, Ducatti, Honda, Kaw, Suzuki, etc. So what does that sound connote, if not performance?

Bob

I'll tell you who has been annoying me of late: cyclists with whistles. It's bad enough train guards have them, I can just about tolerate a bells. There seems to be a growing trend for whistles. One day I'm going to block all cycle routes with concrete blocks. When I become a millionaire with endless finances I will be casting gigantic concrete blocks between any gaps that cyclists sneak through to scare pedestrians with whistles.

Pedestrians came first and that person that invented the wheel grrr to you I say, grrr.

Trust me Kittin, you want to back off of this one.  I learned from the last biker thread that criticism of loud, annoying, mid-life crisis induced hobbies equaled un-Americanism and hatred for freedom.

Hey buddy.....unless its escaped your notice I'm not American.

And quite frankly as a european I could't give a flying **** about Americanism.

Freedom yes, but then I'm not a slave!

kittinSol -> RE: Harley V-Rod query. (5/28/2008 2:44:12 PM)

We're a happy lot, as you can tell [8D].

Can you rent bikes? That would be a good way to try them out and find out what you like best.

PS: I'm European too. Perhaps this explains my jaded and miserable attitude to the ultimate American riding machine?

*duck*.

Quack. [8D]  Well, me, I like at least 4 wheels under me when I'm cruisin' but different strokes.  Louder than Ted Nugent is too loud.

An inferiority complex, a receding hairline, and/or a small.....I better not say it.

Edited to add:  I AM KIDDING.

Well for me personally the difference is purely sensation.....When I hear a harley it gives me goose bumps......When I hear a Jap bike it gives me a headache!

I guess that sound is there because it can be.  I've never found it annoying, but then again the man isn't one to rev it at midnight.  Most times, I don't even hear him when he comes home and I'm sleeping.  If we were into speed then his bike isn't the bike of choice.  We're not.  We're into leisurely rides on beautiful country backroads and enjoying the weather.  I almost always take my camera along and take pics as we ride.

Well yes I could rent a harley.

Well as to the idea that it is the "Ultimate American riding machine" thats probably because until quite recently there was no compitition.

But as I said in my original post I much prefer bikes that go around corners, I would add that I also prefer bikes that are not covered in plastic fantastic dayglo coloured body work, which is probably why I prefer chops and street fighters.

I’m no bike expert Mr MasterObjectmaker but the Harley seems more likely to get you killed in a happy slapping event. Due to their top heavy pushoverability.[8|]

ownedgirlie -> RE: Harley V-Rod query. (5/28/2008 3:03:50 PM)

My cousin's husband has a Harley.  It's beautiful.  When I need to get my ya-ya's out he takes me out on it.  The last ride was a sunset ride through the Sierra Foothills - just beautiful.  I love love love being on a bike, but (dare I say) the bikes whose mufflers are altered to make them excruciatingly loud annoy the hell out of me.  Then again, I'm sound-sensitive and loud noises feel really assaulting to me.

FullCircle -> RE: Harley V-Rod query. (5/28/2008 3:05:01 PM)

I'm clutching at straws perhaps but you have to consider the impact of youth violence on today’s biker.

kittinSol -> RE: Harley V-Rod query. (5/28/2008 3:07:59 PM)

Too true, as bikers' age increase exponantially... the yoof of today stops at nothing, you're right. We need to look out for our more senior leisurers.

MstrObjectmaker -> RE: Harley V-Rod query. (5/28/2008 3:11:54 PM)

Well I can see that this was a waste of time.....

Well I suppose I will have to go back to reading reviews in bike mags.
