ORIGINAL: DomAviator Slaveboy, while we generally agree on matters of history I have to take exception to on point you make. Contrary to popular belief, GWB did NOT "start the Iraq war" he FINISHED IT. The Gulf War of 1991 never ended. I was there several times enforcing no fly zones and being painted with targeting radar and shot at during the "Peace"... The war never really ended, despite the UN Resolution - GWB went back in and finished what we started in 1991 and Saddam is dead as he should have been in 1991. Bush just ended the sword rattling and cat and mouse... but we have been exchanging shots and bombing strikes steadily since 1991. As for chickpea - the cuban missle crisis protected us from NOTHING. It brought us to the brink of a nuclear war over some silly fucking missles in cuba that Kennedy created a panic by saying they could reach Miami in minutes. Yeah WHOOPEE the SLBMs on soviet boomers patrolling up and down the atlantic seaboard could reach us in seconds. Personally, from the standpoint of a Navy officer who has had some training on such matters I MUCH prefer the land based ICBMs in Cuba - that are stationary and that I can take out in a preemptive strike than the SLBMs that are on the move and could be anywhere and that our S-3 Vikings, P-3 Orions, and fast attack boats have to try to track and find.... Kennedy fixed a minor problem that we knew about by moving it to a deadly game of hide and seek played out across the atlantic. BIG ACHIEVEMENT. He took the boogeyman out of the closet and sent him roaming around the house so you can look for him before he finds you.... That decision led to MANY MANY MANY more near misses than you would care to know about including at least three collissions between soviet boomers and us fast attack subs not to mention one near nuclear meltdown off the coast of New England.... Kennedy got the missles out of Cuba and got them moved to subs 3 miles off our coast.. Nice going JFK. JFK showed that we wouldn't passively stand by while Soviets moved missles to Cuba. Whether this was the biggest threat or not, is besides the point that if someone does that in front of the entire world to see, then the U.S. would appear weak if didn't do anything. A sign of weakness, is a big welcome mat for other countries to try strikes at the U.S. My dad served aboard one of the aircraft carrier near Cuba during the missle crisis, and told me a first hand account of the tension at that time. Basically there was a big threat of nuclear war anyways, everywhere, and communists were sought out in a witch hunt manner. I supported invading Afghanistan and going after the Taliban in retaliation to 9/11. But focusing on weapons of mass destruction that never existed in Iraq which doesn't have anything to do with the Taliban or Al Quida, is a huge blunder that Bush does not want to admit. If (IF) there was actually unfinished business and threats, there are better ways to finish what daddy started than plunging the U.S. into TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS in debt. He couldn't manage most of his life well before his presidency, and he certainly can't manage what he wants to accomplish as President for an entire nation. History repeats itself in Bush's life, blown up on the scale of the world...as leader of the free world. Instead he continues to talk of Ideology. I'm sure we can get technical about what REALLY is the threat to the U.S. a lot is probably kept secret as making them public would, well call for the U.S. to make huge show of response against these threats. It's all politics in International actions, policies, and agendas as well.
