Not that i am aware of, LaT. If they were they would be in the barn. Nature has an awesome way of taking care of the creatures so as a rule they only birth in the late spring

Here it is zero degrees with a windchill of minus 18. And school is on time.

Ah, okay. I just know that around here.......too many farmers intentionally breed for early calves, then end up having to try and revive them after they've pryed them off the frozen ground or lose them. I just saw your post and that was my first thought.

Actually the way you lose a cow in this weather is strange, and i have never seen it happen, but this is the coldest it has been since i lived here.
A cow will sleep with its nose very close to the ground. Their breath freezes from their nose to the ground, and they actually smother in their sleep.

some here do too  LaT and it really makes me mad. Mother nature devised a damn good system and a frozen calf is the result of greed on the part of the breeder

  Yep, He walks every day, no matter the weather. We're not that far from his  work but i worry in this type of weather, it could kill a person. He's never had a problem though - incredibly lucky, he is.

Any of the root vegetables that could be stored in the ground with mulch, I know some of the cruciferous vegetables like it cold. I used to start cabbage when the ground was still half frozen in Idaho, early February though it usually March before I could start anything else early.

There's things for the critters to eat, it's just miserable hard work getting to them. I just got permission to start feeding the squirrels again as we discovered that the particular grey squirrels around here don't hibernate.   (Yes, I'm feeding the squirrels too, I can't help it.....)

Arrrrghhhh, it was gophers and squirrels that got me good in Idaho. One year I planted almost $500 in bulbs and the little buggers dug them up and ate them. I'd had a bunch of specialty tulip bulbs flown in from Holland. Was I ever so frickin' pissed!!!
