Nice Natural Nails - 6/4/2008 5:51:22 PM

i had my acrylic nails removed in December and i cannot bear the thought of getting them again.  i never liked the way they felt, even though i loved the way they looked.

So i'm trying to grow my natural nails.  They grow fast and are usually long-ish but they spilt, crack or peel at the very edge of the nailbed, on the sides.  So i always have like, 8 good nails..never 10.

A/anyone found a product T/hey'd endorse that really did strengthen T/their nails?  i've been thru all the Sally Hansen and other drug store stuff; but i've seen a product called "Tips" on one of the home shopping channels that apparently has great customer reviews.

It's kinda expensive for me though; i was hoping a better alternative was available.

Thanks.

My mother had long natural nails which she was very proud of into her 60's. One time a cab driver was enthusing over her nails, wishing his wife had ones like her. Her response was that she didn't do housework, she had a cleaning woman once a week. That you cannot have great nails and be the one scrubbing the kitchen floor or the tub, or carrying laundry baskets.

However, if you aren't doing this, keep good rubber gloves at the kitchen sink so they don't get wet even if all you are doing is washing out a coffee cup. Keep them dry as much as possible.

I play steel string guitar professionally, using a very aggressive attack from my nails (think Ani de Franco meets Sid Vicious), and if I stop eating yogurt for more than a week they get very brittle...I'm loathe to go with acrylics because of the fungal problems, and once I get a couple of yogurts back in my system my nails become pliable and strong again...other folks say the same thing about gelatin, I've never tried it.

i finally took off my acrylic's s well, took a good while to get them back in shape again.  a friend of mine told me to go to the any health food store or vitamin shop and get some 'bone meal w/ calcium and vitamin D' tablets.  they worked wonders, i just followed the instructions on the bottle and my nails are so much healthier and no more splitting and peeling.  i hope this helps. ~smiles~

After reading everyones responses I think the best advice is to go with what works for you.
A doctor will tell you gelatin works wonders.  Gelatin is made from horses...did you know that?
Same with bone meal...dead animals.
I take multi vitamins and calcium suppliments.  They do nothing for my nails.  They've always been brittle.
I've tried many of the over the counter remedies to no avail.  Then of course you have the suppliments that are specifically designed for nails.  They have never worked for me either.

I'm reading this thread as close as you are Pink..if someone comes up with something I haven't tried...I'll be sure to try it.
I generally don't even have 8 good nails...we're talking two to three here.

My best nail growth happened while I was pregnant.  I think it had something to do with the prenatal vitamins.

Same with me Katylied, and my hair.

i use Berts bees cuticle cream, it works well, when i remember to use it every morning and night.
i have the same problem, thin week nails, they get to a certain length then start to peel and break.

Just get a job where you need to keep your nails short for typing/data entry speed/accuracy, in no time your nails will be growing like crazy and youll be cutting them down every two weeks.

My midwife told me it was to do with hormone production - hair, and nails rock for some at that period of time - skin can suffer.  I could even do hair removal without any usual problems.

My nails strengthened from Women's Once Daily multivitamins.

Multivitamins will help a lot.  I also swear by the strengthening products by "essie"  even my very brittle nails became strong enough to grow out a significant amount when I used it regularly.  Only one I've tried (and I've tried 25+ kids) that worked for me, and it dries super fast so its not a big problem to apply it as often as you need to.  Not sure where you are, but I noticed some supermarkets are carying some of essie now (same with beauty supply stores/harmons..) you want the millionails, it comes in a box.

There is a fabulous product called "Healthy Hoof".  It was actually designed for making horses hooves healthier, but it works on humans too.  It takes about 3 weeks to really see a difference, but it works.

Well, I will also be watching this thread closely.  I made the choice to remove my silk-wrap/high-maintanace/french manicured nails to be able to use the money to join a gym in order to get the rest of my body in shape!  I'm going thru the "oh my god...what did I do" phase. I take a multi-vitamin (along with many other supplements), get my daily amount of calcium needed (can't go over that because I get "stone" complications...long story) and have tried most of the "hard as nails" type products out there. My nails are very thin and weak right now...and I'm frustrated and embarressed by the way they look.
I wish I had a "magic cure" to share with you, but I think what it will take is time and constant grooming/attention to them somewhat close to "normal".
Good luck and I'll keep checking back here for new ideas.

added......I will be looking for this "Healthy Hoof" product. If it works for the horsies.........I'm willing to try! Thanks.

O Gawd, it would have to be yogurt. Yuck.  Okay, i can do it.  BTW, how much yogurt?  Like one serving a day?

Thanks a lot.

O yea katy, me too -- i had great nails all during my pregnancy and while i was breast-feeding, and i also think it was those super-vitamins.

However, i'm no longer fertile, lol.

Thanks to you BBWnNC, as well as A/all the O/others who recommeded products.  i'll write down the names of these things and look around the stylist supply store and see what's on offer, and how much it costs.

i'm kinda relieved N/nobody recommended that "Tips" product from the home shopping network; it was expensive.

For the time being, i think i'll skip the vitamins, supplements and yogurt, he he.

Thanks again.  (Good luck, sub4hire.)

Mine tend to grow rather strong if I do a self manicure 2x a week, just even a mini. Most often I just moisurize, push the cuticle back, and buff them using a 4 in 1 buffer from Walgreens. It seems that gets the blood flowing to the area, so they grow string and fast.

Biotin found in the vitamin section of most stores.
Its good for strengthening hair and nails.

greetings, pinksugarsub  I have heard about and tried all the above mentioned items. I tend to be very rough on my hands, and hiring a maid is not an option.  My beauty secret would be Vaseline, ( petroleum jelly) I use in daily, placing it around my eyes, around my mouth, and on my hands and nails. I have noticed that my cuticles are much softer and nails less brittle. I hope this will help.
edited for proper spelling of your name.
