I own that book and I support this message.

Very Good Directions and NEARLY everything is Practical for use but mind you MOST is SHOW BONDAGE meaning it looks good not all is great for Suspension Bondage.

The Two Knotty Boys book is Great for a Beginner and someone who likes the art as all pictures are very well done.

I got a nice one from Twisted Monks site called Shibari You Can Use. It's pretty cool. Goes alittle more into detail than most i have as far as the artistic side if that is what you are interested in

SNoB -> RE: Does anyone know where i can find some good books on rope bondage (6/10/2008 11:23:35 PM)

What kind of book depends on what type of rope bondage you are in to.  The knotty boys book is great, for what it is.  Lots of fancy decorative knots (that are fully functional mind you) that almost requite a synthetic rope to tie.  Midori's book is pretty, so are chanta's and haringtons.  If you are looking to buy a book for a really "advanced" rope lover, you might want to find a friend that speaks/reads Japanese that will translate the amazon japan site.  They have some GREAT books that have never been published in English.

Most bondage books dont cover suspension due to liability.

Funny, I alwayst think of suspension as show bondage, the rope equivelent of single tails and hanging floggers from your belt.

I always think of it as the most technical and demanding type of rope bondage.  Floggers hanging from the belt are silly and obviously just for show.

The term 'show bondage' is a bit misleading. This isnt ment as 'bondage to put on a show' for an audence. Its more along the idea of rope-lingerie. The knotyboys books focus heavily on semetrical knots and complicated weaving patterns. Its fetishwear more than it is bondage.

Naturaly, suspention is 'show bondage' as you define cause it draws folks of the mindset that want to show off how much of a badass they are. 'Hey, look at me, I can do suspention. I got l33t skilzz!'

Then you've obviously missed the point of rope suspension by a few miles. Of course, they are spectacular to watch - and hence an obvious choice for a rigger who wants to do a demo -, but above all they're one of the most intense types of bondage (in terms of pain, disorientation, etc.) you can actually use in a scene, if you have the skill.

Yes, whenever I suspend someone in the privacy of my own home with no one else around I find a mirror and say "look at my 1337 bondage skillz!~"

For some of us, play isnt about that.  Suspending someone gives me a rush for some reason, gives me a natural high.  That is why I do it.

I can vouch for that - he dances around and sings to me.  I enjoy it a lot ;)

Thanks for so clearly demonstrating that I was right.

Oh for the love of pete .....

You have an fallacy of the undistributed middle in your argument. Since I cant draw venn diagrams here Im going to have to explain as best I can just typing. First lets start with the general case.
  1. All As are Xs
  2. B is a X
  3. Therefore, B is a A
An example may make this clear. 1) Human beings live on earth 2) Ducks live on earth 3) theirfore ducks are human beings. Clearly this is not the case. Now lets examine an instance closer to what is going on in this thread.
  1. Showoffs do suspention.
  2. SNoB does suspention.
  3. Therefore, SNoB is a showoff.
Clearly this is not the case. Now lets try another.
  1. SNoB is not a showoff
  2. SNoB does suspention
  3. Therefore, nobody that does suspention is a showoff.
Thats not the case either.

But then again, it just wouldent be the internet if folks didnt misapply generaliaties.

The condescension in this thread for anything that isn't as "serious" as suspension is obvious.  Clearly suspension requires a lot of technical skill, but not everyone gets off on technical stuff.  Considering the following, I don't feel too outrageous for calling them on their bullshit.

So only suspension is "real"?

and he already told us above that it isn't "real" bondage, just fluffy show stuff

quote:

and "real" experts don't use any of that synthetic stuff, "real" bondage experts use hemp and lovingly prepare it and so only losers use synthetic rope.

quote:

Of course you do, I am sure you think that way of everything you do

quote:

"if you have the skill" and aren't some pathetic poser who only does "show bondage"

Yep, I am just being overly sensitive, I mean it isn't like suspension bondage tends to draw arrogant assholes or anything, or people who think that what they do is better than what anyone else does.  I don't have an issue with any form of play "per se" and there are cool people who do all sorts of stuff.  However, just like being a DM tends to draw the control freak newbies, suspension tends to draw the show offs, often with delicate egos.  They often seem to be the ones more intent on watching the crowd's reaction than their partner.  Yes, this is a broad generalization but like saying "men tend to want to fuck women" has its exceptions, it is still true more often than not.

TheHungryTiger -> RE: Does anyone know where i can find some good books on rope bondage (6/12/2008 10:29:05 AM)

I remember once at a kink convention I was watching a guy attempt to do a sideways suspention. The idiot had used a freakin lobster bouy hitch as a single limb cuff. After nearly an hour of fumbling around he finaly did manage to get her off the ground, but it was so painful that the bottom could only stay up for less than a minute.

After the scene I was talking to some other folks that were from his same local group and they were gushing lovelingly abotu how great a bondage expert he was. Confused, I asked for clarification. I got told that since suspention is 'the higest level' of bondage, and that he does suspention, it must folow that he is a total badass at bondage and is highly skilled. When I asked about the bottom, I got told that she just didnt have the willpower or strength of character to play at the high level of intensity that he did.

I run into folks like this all the time. I cant even begin to count the number of 'bondage experts' I have met who brag to me that they folow ancient tradations that have been pased down in secret for hundreds of years. Yet at the same time they measure their rope in metres. As if feudal japan had the metric system.

There are jsut certian things that ego-players are drawn to cause they can use that to brag to others about how skillful they are. Singletails. Florintine flogging. Needles. suspention. These things are not THAT hard to pick up, but they go a long way toward being able to prove to others how much of a badass you are. When was the last time you heard anyone say 'He must be a real real good top. After all, he does cloth blindfolds'

Exactly!  I think suspension is a good test of a Top, if that is all you want to be....just kidding about the "all you want to be" but to ME, my definition of top centers around technical skill and perhaps that is where the chip on my shoulder comes from.

And frankly, I could do a scene with a cloth blindfold and nothing else that would rock some people's world every much as someone else could do a suspension and rock anothers.

By he you mean another poster, not me, because I didnt say that.

I consider the two knotty boys experts, because they are, they are great at what they do.  The comment about synthetic rope is because it ties knots A LOT differently than natural fibers.  Tie a river knot with hemp and with nylon or MFP, now untie them both.  Then you might understand my comment about synthetic rope, rather than assume that I was making a statement about you are only a real rope top if you use hemp, or some other bullshit I never said or implied.

No, I just feel that way about suspension.  I do lots of rope bondage, and MOST of it, is NOT suspension.  Again, I was offering my opinion by using the statement "I always think of...."  Not making a statement and claiming what I said was fact.

Someone who is just a poser, will probably not give you a great suspension experience anyway. For that, you need a connection and a rigger having his full attention with his bunny. Being able to give the bunny a great ride is an important skill in this. I've got quite a bit of experience of playing with suspension both privately and publicly and some with doing demo's/shows at fetish parties. Play and show are two completely different worlds.
