Well actually (not to digress Gwyn, but) that's been common knowledge for years.

*chuckles* well this co-worker of mine is also known to spew out at least 3 things a day that makes every one stop and want to jam a pen into his eye socket.

If he didnt have such a good sense of humor.. and wasnt so likeable other then his politics that mofo would be dead by now.

just as in the 60's and 70's they used allowing blacks thier rights to be a gateway for all sorts of bad things.. they will turn allowing gays rights into being the gate way for all sorts of bad things now too.

at least they are predictable.

Gwyn, no it's not that bad!
We just look at Calif. like they're our retarded cousins.
I live in S.C. now and I have no problems with gay marriage at all,...as long as both chicks are *Hot!* [:D]

Gay marriage causes pollution and is raising oil prices, you know.

Ahem.  I don't see a good reason to ban gay marriage on a purely objective equal-rights basis.  Either you have to give equal rights to everyone, or you're not doing it; if you create exclusionary social apparati, that doesn't work.  Not allowing gay marriage but allowing civil unions will fare about as well as the separate but equal doctrine.  Not allowing gay marriage at all will eventually fare about as well as slavery (the institutionalized racist kind, before I get anyone excited!).

However, the comments about people using it as political mobilization tool are dead on.

That's why the judiciary's highest branches are not elected in this country.

That seems to me, to sum it up altogether fairly well.

You're in love, and you like what you see in the mirror....or you don't. (in my case that's somewhat subjective [:o])...but so what?

Geeeez...I don't care if you're a trucker and you have a particular view on the subject or not....why not just live and let live?

Like I said...I know I'm preaching to the choir here...but why can't people just stay in their homes, enjoy their own landscape (whether it's their rodies....or neighbors) and just enjoy life as it's handed to them....and all that God offers...

Truly I can't believe that Jesus, Mohammed (okay...I just checked...it's spelled about 38 different ways...this one will have to do) or whoever your favorite deity is...would say...."Ya know what...I don't give a shit if you're happy...my way is vastly better..."

I have to believe if these dudes think they have a handle on things....they're smart enough to have gotten to a place where many of us are and came to the conclusion...."if you feel the way I do when I'm spending a quiet moment on a river bank with the person I absolutely can't think of spending more time with....that's a pretty good match".

(Ehhhhh.....what the fuck do I know?)

(Sorry to all...saw an article in the local news...I'm in a venting mood it seems).

Seriously I agree with that.  Marriage should not be a function of government.  The only reasons government should be involved in a relationship is to settle contract disputes, property disputes, and UM custodial issues.  The government should only recognize unions between people for the purposes of contract law.

Marriages are the domain of religion, and we are supposed to have a seperation of church and state in this country.  It's up to each individual church who they perform marriage ceremonies for.

I disagree with you there - marriage is a contract between two individuals, and it has been possible to get married outside of the religious context for a while now (isn't that what JoP are for?).

[sm=alarm.gif]  [sm=noway.gif]  we agreed on something?

*grabs out callendar*

I think it should be totaly done away with or equalized for everyone.

You do not get the paperwork from your church.. you do not need a minister to perform jack shit. You *DO* however have to pay the govt, and fill out thier forms.. and follow thier rules.

It used to be 2 people went before a tribal leader did thier song and dance and poof they were married.. then as Christianity spread it was before a priest... then the govt stepped in and lic. it. Then you had to do the legal stuff. ( waaaaaaaay back in the day the chief was the legal stuff. ) as I see's it the church stuck thier nose into it.

People keep saying that, even though history shows much otherwise.  The word origins for marriage and wedding relevant to selecting a mate are not particularly religious in origin, and the practice is tied to inheritance, lines of succession, fealty, and taxes... it always has been the domain of government.

When the Church tried to buck that notion with Henry the 8th, he fired them and got a new one.

Until we can find a marriage license issued by a church, or one that requires a specific religous ceremony, the 'separation of church and state' is a non sequitur.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Why, in the Holy living Mother of God FUCK is this a continuing dilemma?????? (6/10/2008 8:41:46 PM)

Marriage is a contract with all kinds of ramifications that reach all areas of one's life -property ownership, medical authority in cases of emergency, child rearing,  taxes, etc... The religious piece is not the "marriage"... that is just a wedding ceremony... like a baptism or taking communion or lighting the candles at Hanukah... The contract of marriage is when the piece of paper is signed.

But what did someone once say?  Gay people should be allowed to get married - they should be as miserable as the rest of us...

ahem

oh and marriages were made in heaven... but so were thunder and lightning...

have a nice day.

Yes it has, but the word marriage or matrimony seems to carry some weight amongst religious types.  So I say, throw 'em a bone.

You bible thumpers don't want homosexuals getting married?  Fine.....We won't have "marriage" laws or certificates anymore.  We will simply have contractual agreements to share property and responsibilities of any offspring.  We will call them "cohabitation agreements" or whatever.  If you want to get married in a church that doesn't allow homosexuals to get married, than have at it.  Meanwhile, don't bother the churches that do allow it.  Now your version of marriage is protected within the walls of your church.  Truth, justice, and the American Way prevails once again.  Now, can we stop this nonsense and focus on important things?

Phin -> RE: Why, in the Holy living Mother of God FUCK is this a continuing dilemma?????? (6/10/2008 8:47:36 PM)

I got suckered into this conversation at work.... it started with someone saying "we are all going to hell now, the fags are getting married" my responce is that marrage is about love. I saw we were not going to see eye to eye and tried to step out of it, when a black man said that a different thing should be implemented similar to "civil union" I cannot leave that point alone at all. "So what you are saying is that it should be a seperate institution?" "Yes" "Equal in all but the name?" "yes" "So seperate, but equal, huh?"

At least I opened one mind that day.
