So, I was looking for advice. When I was a teenager and beyond, when most were a pimply mess, I had skin of alabaster. It was gorgeous. Now in my mid 40's my skin is a mess. I am assuming from hormones asociated with perimenopuse and the changes that start taking place in a womans 40's. My skin is broken out in, not in black heads or white heads(I do get white heads) more of red bumpy rashes.

Can anyone tell me how they combat these types of skin  problems?

Break outs happen for more reasons than first thought , and there are so many more treatments out there  for it . Clean pours can prevent most break outs , though chemicals and hormones with in the body also is a factor .I know many have had great results with new products out there and a trip to a skin doc can help big time .Don't worry eat all the chocolate ya want
do the research on stuff your putting on your  face  and ask a doctor .Here in the desert southwest i find i am scrubing  my mug alot with all the dirt , dust and other nasties in the air .

I was having a lot of problems with very dry skin on my forehead coupled with redness and bumpiness on the rest of my face and the sort of thing you are describing.  I was trying all kinds of stuff, and then my best friend bought me a skin care package from Clinique for Xmas.  I saw a difference after ONE DAY.  It's kind of pricy (in my town it is carried by Macy's), but it lasts quite a while. It's been six months now and I've used about half of each container.  I don't use their makeup and all that stuff (I hardly wear makeup), but I use the liquid facial soap, the toner, and the moisturizer.

By the way, exfoliating always made my skin worse.

Oh, and you might want to see a doc and make sure it's not rosacea.  There are other treatments for that.

Perhaps a trip to your doctor is in order.  That way he can actually diagnose what it may be?  It could be Rosacea

It could be an allergy to something.

Until you get to the doctor you could amp up your water drinking.  It cleans the body and may help your face if you drink enough.

I have an appointment with the doctor. I think I have roseacea. Well i knew I had developed a little of it as I have some broken vesssels in my face. But after I looked it up I realized itis rosecea. Plus I probably have ocular rosecea also as I have had broken vessels in the corner of my right eye on and off the last couple of years. I saw these symptoms decribed and i believe I have the bumpy acne kind and the occular kind. Ah well worse things to be afflicte with. i have an appointment next thursday.

I would advise not to use anything on your face other than water and gentle soap until you get diagnosed.  I hope all goes well.

Eucerin has a dryness relief that one of my coworkers with Rosecea swears by, and it has a slight green tint to help decrease the redness.
I have a 2 coworkers with it, so if you are diagnosed let me know and I'll ask wthem what they recommend.

Well luckily, its only this bad when I am premenstrual. I have no loss of self esteem and I do a good job covering it up with makeup. Either Clinique or Almay.

Could it be that the rashes are due to allergies of some sorts?

i work with the elderly and some of those ladies have the best skin. So, i began asking them why their skin is so pretty.  Most of them say they use/used Ponds or ivory soap and water.

I had Rosacea awhile back.  It was the redness, rashlike and small fluid filled bumps.  Dermatologist diagnosed it as such.  I was put on tetracycline antibiotics and metro gel.  It would clear up then come back, which they tell you will happen.  Your skin will be VERY sensitive to cleansers and makeups, so use caution or it could get awful, with swelling and such.

There is no cure for it......... but guess what?  I went on Atkins a few years back, which means you completely eliminate sugar from your diet and the carbs you eat are complex, nutritional carbs.
Anyway, my skin, hair and nails became stunning and it didn't even dawn on me that the Rosacea had gone away completely, but it did.  And it's never been back in those three years.

I've been following this thread with interest because a month ago my skin started getting oilier and I've had breakouts too. I'm of an age where it could be perimenopause, so I can't help wonder if my hormones are running amuck and creating this mess on my face and all around my hairline. Or is it the Mirena that was placed in February, or is it the fish that I added back into my diet in March? (I used to be a lacto-ovo vegetarian.) I bought this stuff called Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. The very few reviews at Amazon were positive. I've found a couple of reviews elsewhere that were positive as well. When I bought the stuff, the woman in line ahead of me said "oh that's like a facelift in a jar". Then she went on to say "but your skin doesn't look oily". Well trust me sistah, I have an oil slick happening on my face!

I'll let you know how it goes with the clay. It sounds as if it's something that will help improve your skin over time but hopefully it will calm my skin down right away because I haven't had skin this bad in so long and I just can't stand it!

Wish me luck. :)

Good luck!
My skin got oilier too as I got older. Think of this as a blessing. The oil will help you to look younger! Sounds like we have alot in common sista. I'll let you know how my appointment goes and you let me know how your new regime goes.

On the brightside, my flareup seems to have subsided. The bunps are still there but the redness has faded and its not itching.

If you have sensitive skin, could any of the products you use... lotions, makeup, or soaps - including laundry soap, have changed their formula recently?

I can only use tide free for my brother's laundry, because of skin sensitivity.  Every other product I've tried results in a similar skin condition that has been described.
