ok.. here's the thing.  Both DLS and I are very conscious of how our um's behave in public and insist on them not bothering other people.  That being said, if one of mine were on the floor throwing a tantrum and I was watching it without acting on it, then I am employing a tactic where said um would have to realize that I don't care what sort of manipulation they were using on me, it won't work.  Sort of "Ho-HUM" ae you done now? cuz you still aren't getting what you wanted."
Now Asher, awesome as you are, if you had come up and said to my kid, "Shut the (almost any other word except FUCK) up!"  I probably woud have been happy, thanked you, and hoped that my um was embarassed as hell.
The fact that you used the ultimate curse word to my um was where I would have flipped out.  I have big issues with people talking like that around any kids.. Especially MY kids..

I spose its a difference in upbringing... with the people that raised me curse-words didnt actually exist, or at least there was no particular stigma to using them (Hard to tell a bunch of bikers not to say fuck around the littluns)

as I put in later, when I realized the situation wasnt clear enough, it had jack to do with any tactic, and more to do with a person either too overwhelmed to properly handle thier offspring, or a shitty parent, since I've been paying more attention after finding out how close to me they lived, ima go with option 2
