No offense: A phrase commonly used prior to or just after saying something that's definitely offensive. It is most commonly stated in such a manner that the target of the offensive comment will be made to look like a jerk for taking offense. However, generally speaking, the comments either just before or after the phrase "no offense" are most often precisely meant to be offensive - but done in such a way as to somehow allow the person making said comments appear blameless (which of course he/she isn't.)
syn: "I was just saying..." "just joking"... "not to hurt your feelings, but..."
ant: "to tell the truth... " "honestly!!"
