*sighs*

People, people, people...what's with the missing options?!

"Wear a Barney suit into work and sing 'I Love You' nonstop."
"Follow 'Amazing Grace' with 'Dont Cha'...it's all good, nuns n hoes, nuns n hoes, yo."
"Start sporting a Hitler moustache - women can do it, too..."

I could go on, but Rain wants a turn at the computer...

[I blame her for everything.  she is the joy and scapegoat of my life.]

I worked in a "religous" hospital - my supervisor organised a mandiatory meeting for Saturday (bitch!) and started off with a prayer - to Jesus - not God, not the Deity, not the Supreme Being - but  Jesus.
I wouldn't have been upset about it, but one of  my workmates is a Sikk - and the boss was aware of this.
I went to her after the meeting and told her i thought she behaved in a very inappropriate manner.
strangely enough, i received a bad evaluation that year.

Praying to  a supreme being in a christian hospital is fine - but i really think that there is a way to do it that doesn't denegrate other religions - or even lack of religions.  Insensitive git!!

Which is why i could talk to a boss about her christian music.  Most of music that passes as christian sounds as if it should be playing in an elevator! very bland.

I wouldn't hear it due to having mp3 player on.

If you worked as a church floor sweeper I guess it'd be a problem.

The politico who took office after 'my' Insurance Commissioner was a 'born again Christian' who wanted to commence every meeting with a prayer -- to Jesus.  As it happens, I'm Catholic, but a lot of my coworkers were Jewish and a few were Muslim, etc.

The guy was a horse's ass anyway, and I knew I was on solid ground, so I filed a formal complaint.  Being the complete weenie that he was, he knocked it off immediately.

Crickey; he had been a U.S. Senator before running for state office.  Proving once again that many politicos are dumb as a box of rocks.

Note: I'm not gonna 'stand on principal' and endanger my employment over something like this.  I am way too fond of paying the mortgage and school tuition and so forth.  If I hadn't been sure I didn't need to fret about losing my job, I'd never have done it -- I just happened to be in a secure position at the time.  So I never judge anyone else for allowing something to slide instead of speaking up, particularly at work.

I'd turn some Slayer up.

Not really. I'd talk to them, and see about working something out. My employer is a devout Christian, and likes Christian music, but is reasonable enough to not push it on anyone.

Anne,

I had not even thought of it that way but it does create a hostile work envirnment she knows I do not share her beliefs we have had several discussions on it (she tried to forced the children to say grace once and have me lead it).

Nika

I didn't read the whole thread before I posted; I thought the question was hypothetical.  I'm sorry this is happening to you, Nika.

Anne is quite right; it is harrassment and in theory you are protected from it.  Depending on how bad it is -- whether you're also being subjected to proletizing or something -- and how secure you judge your employment to be, you can probably get an employment rights lawyer to send a letter to your employer's CEO or general counsel on your behalf for about $100.  (I sure wouldn't pay more.)

That should put an end to this nonsense immediately, unless 'head up azz' is a management style where you work.

Best wishes,

In the work place the only appropriate thing to do is ask they turn it off because you find it offensive and then if they refuse file formal complaints. However if you complain you have to follow through and if you supervisor is liked get ready for backlash because these kinds of things can get ugly and possible change rules that would stop ALL music in the building.

Trust me on this I don't like Rap and I complained and they did away with all music devises and I was the Douche Bag of the company and Hated by everyone. Today I learn to drown it out cause it really isn't worth it. What is right and wrong have no place when it comes to a Paycheck and I think the Paycheck is more important than my right to Not have to listen to something.

Think before you act but ultimatly remember that no matter what all your decisions will come with consequences that you will have to accept.

Steel

I don't hink the law protects You from the evils of Rap Music, LOL.  I did once complain in a salon -- where I was one of the customers -- about gangsta rap because I'm not listening to the f**king 'N' word, ever.  I can certainly spend my money elsewhere.

Everybody seemed confused as hell that I complained, but they did turn that crap off.

I agree with You Steel, sometimes complaining ends up making things even more uncomfortable at work.

What a f**ktard though, playing 'Christian' music in Nika's workplace.  Damned hypocrite.

Imnsho some things arent worth arguing over
this is one of those things

now, if its loud enough to stop me from being able to concentrate enough to do my job, then I would talk to the person about it

but freedom of expression is there for all forms of expression, especially what you dont want to hear

Respectfully -- surprisingly -- I disagree.  You might remember the Haris Krishnas, annoying people trying to deplane in airports -- pushing flowers and religious nonsense on passengers until they couldn't navigate the damned hallway.  I dunno why, but this has passed.

My housing association is a favorite spot for all sorts of strangers, from kids selling candy to Jehovah's Witnesses who want me to buy a copy of the 'Watchtower'.  I wish my board would take steps to prohibit soliciting around here.

But the workplace is different -- and religious music is different.  Nika has a legal right to perform her duties and earn her paycheck free of anyone else's religious proclamations, whatever form they may take.  She's entitled to feel annoyed -- I was annoyed myself.  I'd be hard pressed to find anything more personal than someone's spiritual life.  Her supervisor does not have the right to force her beliefs on someone else merely because they report to her.

I don't even want to know what my supervisors' religious beliefs may be, unless we become friends outside work.  I don't want to be 'told' what to believe, or how to vote, or what issues they're excitable about, etc.  It's work -- I'm not there as a somebody else's target for 'conversion'.  I'm there to earn a living, period.

It wouldn't bother me at all unless it was just too loud to concentrate.

Although from what I've heard of Christian rock... it would be difficult to tolerate. Unless you're seriously mellow, and even then...

I love gospel  music, detest contemparary (oy I can't spell today) christian music.

Several years ago I worked for a very small company (three employees including the owner) and daily would receive religious pamphlets on my chair in the morning. It drove me freaking nuts, the owner knew my views but didn't care. Conversion was his goal no matter what.
I was supposed to end every business call with 'God bless you and thank you for your business', there was a prayer before lunch etc.

This is the same man that had drilled a very small hole into the womens bathroom.
Who had set up small mirrors so he could watch me at all times from his desk in another room.

Yuck.

Thankfully I was able to move on quickly.

Am I wrong, or are 'Christians' the big offenders here?  I can't remember ever being hassled at work by a Muslim or Jewish boss behaving this way.

I have a relative who is 'deeply committed' to 'converting people to Christianity'.  She's been to Nepal to aggravate -- what?  Buddists? -- and to Alaska to aggravate Native Americans. She worked with Muslims here for awhile in a small business they owned, and when she decided they'd never convert, she quit her job (so another part of the family could support her).

I'm mystified by a Christian -- or anyone -- who doesn't believe the Commandment to 'Love Your Neighbor' trumps 'push your beliefs onto vulnerable people'.

why do you think i left the church? seriously? lol. i have nothing against christians or the religion, just the way that a lot of the ones that i used to interact with when i was younger, to the point that i distrust the institution as a whole. i respect the actual religion a lot just not the way that a lot of people i see practice it.

My employer does not permit music in the workplace. People play it in certain offices (this is a big company) but if someone complains about it the music must be turned off. My supervisor's office is actually in a different building about 10 miles away so I wouldn't hear it if he played it.
