OK so I hate doctors mostly because whenever I have tried to talk about stuff of a mind nature before they have ignored me. So here goes, I was wondering if anyone knew of a link between the time of the month and physical illness, I seem to get flu like symptoms every period along with rather serious depression I have been taking vit b6 which seems to have helped during the month that im not on but as soon as i came on i got a sore throat aching muscles difficulty breathing and general shitness, it happens every time, and although I would love to ignore it the fact that it gets in the way of work I cant ignore, I cant take a week off every month!!

KatyLied -> RE: Period stuff (6/28/2008 1:13:52 PM)

There has to be a link of some sort.  I am asthmatic, and almost without fail my asthma symptoms worsen immediately prior to and during my period.  I've noticed it so much that I started researching it and found that it is not uncommon.  And that it can also happen with other illnesses:

Research has shown that flare-ups of conditions ranging from arthritis to migraines to yeast infections can be directly related to a woman's menstrual cycle.This has been attributed primarily to two things, the hormonal patterns of the menstrual cycle and stress related to menstruation. If a woman notices that certain health complications tend to recur at particular times of the month she should keep a diary of this pattern and bring it to the attention of her doctor or health care provider.

linky for above statement

Thanks Katy, I was thinking of doing a diary of it actually :D

sub4hire -> RE: Period stuff (6/28/2008 1:16:43 PM)

Kind of like a flare up of acne?  The hormones changing and so on, so forth?

Anyway, I'd like to add if your general doctor is ignoring your concerns..find one who wants to
do their job.

Decreased levels in estrogen.

in the 21st century...this is near impossible....most dr's have way too many patients and usually only care about the $$$.  finding a family dr who is actually from your country as well..seems hard to do...especially here in canada...we are on a shortage of family dr's.  its always been this way...so its mostly people not from our country.

Kalista07 -> RE: Period stuff (6/28/2008 2:51:42 PM)

Apparently i've been pretty fortunate over the past few years because i've had healthcare professionals who have not only validated my experience, but believed me as well..
Katy, i've read many times that due to a lot of stuff that i will never remember or comprehend, many women have increased asthma attacks and decreased asthma functioning when it's that time of the month for them.

Colour, i actually used to be the same way...i would even get a fever whenever i would have my period.  My doctor put me on seasonal which cmopletly erased any of those symptoms. The benefit is i also only have my period four times a year.... Recently, she switched me to seasonique (sp) because on the 'placebo' week, those white pills actually contain some estrogen. Since then, i've had no problems at all.

Blah, I'd kill for a good doc. I've been stuck with ones who are less than helpful... from the guy that pointed at my bruised legs and said "What the hell is that?!" (Hell if I knew, that's why I came to a doctor) to the guy that perscribed me coughdrops for a broken pelvis. (True story, had to be a mixup though)

As far as monthly stuff though, I get the 'flu' every month. killer cramps, puking, fever... yayyy! Now to save up for health insurance so I can find pills I'm not allergic to. ^_^

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Period stuff (6/28/2008 3:04:43 PM)

colouredin ... I'm sorry to hear you've been suffering so badly.  PMS can occur in a lot of different ways - I used to have terrible cramps, mild depression and sleep disorders, on top of really bad IBS symptoms.  In addition to having 3 kids, which helped my cycle tremendously, I am also on the Yasmin birth control pill, which helps regulate the hormone levels.  I think taking the B6 is a good start, as well as perhaps taking a multi-vitamin to cover some other vitamins or minerals which may be low.

I'd definitely recommend keeping a diary of all your symptoms - a good doc will see the pattern after a couple of months.

Also - my symptoms varied month to month - every other month my symptoms are worse for some reason.  I know you can't take off a week from work each month, but on the days you're feeling run down, take care of yourself, have some tea and get to bed and relax.  Don't push yourself.

I, for one, am looking forward to menopause!

i wish i had a heart dr who was like this....he thinks the environment can not affect my breathing or lack of energy.  yet he's never outside with me to know this nor do his tests show any of this cause they cant since they cant mimic the weather.  yep i know time to get a knew dr...

Yeah, I know ... most of my RL friends are older than me and several have gone through it already.  I'm just looking forward to being done with the monthly bullshit... lol

wow, I can't believe a doctor would think this way!  My mom has numerous heart issues from a congenital disorder and the weather really can knock her for a loop - sometimes she can't breathe well enough to walk down the drive to get the mail when it's humid outside.  And she's definitely more listless in the crap weather.  The only time she feels fairly good (for her) is when it's a crisp, clear, gorgeous day in the low 60's - then she feels ok.  It just makes sense - my arthritis is really bad today - it's humid as hell out... go figure.

yes exactly...i have tetralogy of fallot...breathing is its main issue.  the store is 200 feet from where i sit..walking there and back causes me to vomit on most occassions.  on rare occassions i faint.  15C-25C without humidity on a clear or even cloudy day is always best for me.  rain/snow/overcast/humidity/snow on the ground..always issues.

now back to the pms thingy...

Actually its not impossible at all.  Here in the midwest the care is excellent.  I go to a podiatrist who has a grand total of 43 patients last I asked.  Its the over populated areas where there are issues.  My husband goes to a first rate neurosurgeon...who if you go today will operate on Weds.
Of course there are also quacks around here and I've found pretty much every one of them so far.
Living in California..when it takes you 3 to 4 month's to even get an appointment to see your doctor..yes that is a serious issue.  Now I call mine and I'm in within a day.

KatyLied -> RE: Period stuff (6/28/2008 6:33:12 PM)

It must be where you live.  I have a wonderful physician and his wife is a physician's assistant.  I can always get an appointment within a few days, if he is booked I will see her.

sub4hire -> RE: Period stuff (6/29/2008 7:38:26 AM)

That was exactly my point Katy.  As far as specialists go...we've got some great ones here.  You can get in asap to.
Its the general MDs that are an issue.

The west coast is way over crowded, I don't think anyone will argue with that.  Overcrowding means waiting in line at the doctor.
From everyone I've heard from the Canadian free health care system doesn't work either because there is such a wait.  No idea, I'm not Canadian...but its what I've heard.

if i was in the usa i would have died long ago without this system.  no health care for me = death.

came4U -> RE: Period stuff (6/29/2008 9:13:42 AM)

It possibly is due to your period.  I often (4x yr) get back spasms (dysmenorrhea) that feels worse than any back labour I had from giving birth.  I would trade childbirth anyday for the pain I have for 3 days (approx 9 minutes appart for 3 days). During this time, it feels like the flu, yet I haven't had a flu in about 20 years.

califsue -> RE: Period stuff (6/29/2008 6:40:54 PM)

i would suggest adding magnesium to your vitamin routine. i have had problems all my life with my menstrual cycle didn't matter whether i was on birth control or not. now that i am entering the later stages but not yet quite at the menopausal stage i still have problems though somewhat different than when i was in my 20 and 30's. like you, i can't be sick for a week at a time. make sure you are drinking plenty of water, rest, exercise...i know it is a bear...since my doctor suggested taking the magnesium for my migraines i have seen overall improvement during my menstrual cycle including the migraines. i also usually take an otc like midol for the backache, fatigue type symptoms the day before usually is all i need.
and...my depression is much worse but being aware of it and why makes it easier for me to deal with. but..the sadness and crying .... over any little thing .... for me is the worse.
you might look at alternative medicines or practices to see if you may get some relief.
