Interesting information about sunscreen. Not only are many ineffective but some are downright bad for the body.
"In a new investigation of 952 name-brand sunscreens, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 4 out of 5 sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns. Leading brands were the worst offenders: None of market leader Coppertone's 41 sunscreen products met EWG's criteria for safety and effectiveness, and only 1 of 103 products from Banana Boat and Neutrogena, the second- and third-largest manufacturers, are recommended by EWG."

I need SPF 100 or something.

I don't want color. [>:]

Most all natural oils have sun protective qualities. If you look on the back of all sun lotion bottles you will find one or more listed for sesame, coconut, almond, olive & shea oil.

Sesame is the highest - true story :) A few years ago we started visiting a tanning bed to attempt to get a little colour for an upcoming trip to Jamaica. I hadn't deliberately been in the sun in years, so you can imagine how pale I was. After about a month my DH was a nice golden brown, I look like I'd been in the sun maybe ONCE - I wasn't tanning at all. It finally dawned on me - every day after showering I would slather down in sesame oil (hi, I'm an idiot) so I was putting on 30 spf daily.

Coconut isn't as high, but it helps you tan better for some reason & lessens the chance of burning, and if you DO burn you will heal faster usually without or with little peeling provided you continue to use it daily. Almond & olive oil are even lower but still great for the skin.

With any oils, or even commercial products I wouldn't trust just a lotion to fully protect you from burning if you are deliberately out in the sun for extended periods of time from 10am to 6pm. You have to use some common sense if your skin type is prone to frying.

i was told by a dermatologist that anything over a 30 is a waste...

camille65 -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/6/2008 6:20:48 AM)

The thing that really bothers me is reading about the lack of testing/long term results of use and the new knowledge that it is damaging free radicals. I cannot be in the sun much due to my Lupus, it kicks that into flare ups if I get too much sun.

As a child my mother slathered me in Sea & Ski (oh how I hate that scent!)
As a young teen we all used baby oil and covered a double album cover in aluminum foil for that extra burst of sun heh.
As an adult I've tried to use sunscreen but usually forget.

Now I am going to be scrutinizing sunscreen in the same way that I scrutinize the food I eat. This is something that I think the FDA needs to grab hold of and start to regulate, the potential for damage is there and obviously the companies that make sunscreen aren't going to step up on their own.

DreamyLadySnow -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/6/2008 10:38:04 AM)

From what I read of the study the sun blocks, with zinc for instance, are safer and offer better protection than sunscreens.
I think I will go online to buy one of hte ones recommended by camille, as I have never seen them offered for sale here.

I'm thinking aluminum foil might do the trick. Be sure to put the shiny side out to keep cooler.  [:D]

nicochan -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 2:38:25 AM)

I have heard of the Vanicream brand in general, and it's a good brand. Other than that, I know nothing about any of them...

I recently read that rubbing in the sunscreen onto the skin makes it less effective, and that you have to put on a second layer over the rubbed in one for it to work well... so after reading this, potentially that is twice the amount of non-working non-healthy stuff! D:
I am wondering about facial moisturizers with sunscreen now... I can't put regular sunscreen on my face because my skin is so sensitive. Is there a list of ingredients to avoid, or look for? (Or does anyone have any recommendations?) Right now I use Nivea, I think it's called "all around protection" with SPF 15 (If it's just random sun exposure from day to day), and sometimes Eucerin daily protection moisturizer with SPF 30 (if I know I'm going to be out in the sun).

camille65 -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 4:34:03 AM)

nicochan if you click the link embedded in my first post 'sunscreen' it will take you to a ton of information including what ingredients to avoid.
I've always had problems with facial sunscreen too, most make me break out.

nicochan -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 4:43:42 AM)

Ah, awesome, thanks! I was short on time and skimmed the beginnings of the article. I was hoping there was more. :D

camille65 -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 4:46:05 AM)

[:)]
It is a very detailed amount of information once you start reading. I just hate the idea of smearing crap onto my skin when it could be more dangerous than not using any. Plus I had no clue about the lack of regulation in that industry.
While I'm of two minds about regulation, this falls into the category of 'stuff that should be' to me.

i thought sun blocks and sun screens were the same thing...

SirDragon1961 -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 5:05:56 AM)

He dips:

Excuse me for laughing as an Aussie- where our 'sun protection' is heavily regulated.

Like really Camille?   Are you stating that in the "Holy Land of the Free" (Capitalists with ethics- sure)) that companies are free to do what ever they like to make money.

Now  why does this not surprise me.

Have you guys worked out conclusively that cigarette smoking is bad for your health?
What about souped up coupes, and huge highway petrol guzzlers are bad for the enivronment- hence your health.

I'll stop there- nothing surprises me about the inconsistancies in the Holy Land of the Free.

(Yes I am acutely biased)

Madame4a -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 7:03:34 AM)

If you have lupus, you probably already know you have other options... my boi has lupus and this is something I deal with regularly as we ride a motorcycle as much as possible.  She uses things made by solumbra, among others.. recently we've found many great pieces of clothing for the fishing crowd with up to 50 SPF -- and while I agree the lotions can't go that high.. protective clothing can...

so there are options.. its hard on necks and faces.. but the protective clothing and hats are a god send for the boi who can't stand the sunscreens...

Madame4a -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 7:04:55 AM)

they are very different.. as the name implies... block is that... a BLOCK... which often means that rubbing it in will stop it from working...

zinc and titanium dioxide are good ones.. but they might be bad for you.. I haven't read camille's article...

camille65 -> RE: Unhealthy Sunscreen (7/7/2008 7:38:37 AM)

Madame4a I adore hats!!
[:D]
I think I look goofy as hell in them but I don't care, I adore hats.  It is one style that I wish hadn't gone out of fashion and I'm not talking about baseball caps either.

I'm going to look into solumbra, thanks.
