BRNaughtyAngel -> Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 7:51:21 AM)

I went in for my yearly gyno checkup a month ago and all was well.  I had a hysterectomy 17 months ago, but kept my ovaries.

Late last week, I started feeling...... well blah.  It felt like old menstrual cramps, gas cramps, ovulation - all rolled up into one.
I kept trying to explain it away, but it got worse and the pain moved to my lower back as well.

I got an appointment with my OB/GYN on Wednesday and he felt a hard mass in the area where my uterus used to be, so we did an ultrasound and there was big black blob on the screen. [:o]  He said it was 10cms in size - which is like the size of a baby's head and was sitting just above the top of my vagina.  He couldn't even see my ovaries at all.

He wanted to do surgery the next day, but it couldn't get scheduled that fast.  Available operating rooms, assisting surgeons, etc... it couldn't happen until this Tuesday at noon.  I'll be in the hospital for a couple of days.

In the meantime, I'm on pain meds and progesterone pills to hopefully shrink my ovaries, and I have to stay off my feet.

Obviously, he can't know for certain what it is till he goes in, but strongly suspects an ovarian cyst.

So my question is, have any of you ladies dealt with these before?  I've never been pregnant before, but it feels like I'm carrying a little alien baby down there [sm=abducted.gif] especially if I stand up for too long.

p.s. I'm amazed at how quickly this thing developed!

i'm so sorry you're going thru this.  i've had cysts in the past but have been fortunate in that they went away on their own.  the last on was so bad, though, that the possibility of surgery was mentioned.

i wish i had something wonderful to offer for advice or help.....but i don't.  i can only say good luck. cysts are extremely painful and can be a symptom of other things.

this is a somewhat informative link.....  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/ovarian-cysts/DS00129/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs

About 15 years ago, I had an ovarian cyst the same size as the one you're describing (10 cm).  When my doc told me I had a grapefruit-sized object growing in me, I freaked - he had poor bedside manner to say the least.

I was operated on within a few days and had my left ovary and left fallopian tube removed.  My right fallopian tube is twisted.  The chances of me having anymore children are very slim.

It was probably the one scariest event of my youth, as the doctor kept horrorfying me with the 'strong' possibilities of cancer.  Turns out, it was not cancerous at all, just a 'common' cyst (according to the surgeon).  While they may be common, they are frightening.

I hope yours is just a 'common' cyst as well and all goes fine.  Good luck.

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 8:47:44 AM)

Most cysts are common and not cancer.  I'm sorry you are going through this.  I found out last year that I have a few cysts growing and also endometriosis.  Being on the pill now controls it, but as I get older, that option is going to go away and I'll probably have to have a similar operation.  I've read a lot about these things, and for the most part, once you get the cyst taken out you'll be fine.  Best wishes...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 8:53:37 AM)

Cysts are very common, unfortunately.  My mom had one that blew up to the size of a tennis ball and exploded...  Others have them come and go, to the point of disappearing.  I have endometriosis, and the pill controls much of it, but I still get that Danger Feeling.  Good thing that you paid attention to your symptoms!  All will be well! wooo alien baby....ya gotta name her/him willow.....or faery.... [8|]

freyjasdottir -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 9:07:57 AM)

I get them at times but they go away on their own, none as big as yours though.  My mom had her hysterectomy because of them, my doctor has encouraged me to go that route too but I'm chicken.

acissej -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 9:15:29 AM)

I had an ovarian cyst about 13 years ago that burst on its own.  For months, I felt the way you did crampy, gassy, achy, and generally icky.  I also was very nauseated, and had a hard time keeping food down and was throwing up every morning.  I thought it was just stress, so I ignored it for a while, then went to a gastroenterologist who put me through a whole battery of tests, before I finally ended up at the ob/gyn.  She found the cyst just in time for it to self-destruct, so surgery never came up.

It was a miserable experience, and I'm sorry you're going through it.  I hope yours ends up being a simple benign cyst.  Good luck with the surgery, feel better soon, and please keep us posted.

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 9:20:58 AM)

When he did my hysterectomy, I was full of endometriosis.  I had always had horrible cramps and bleeding since I was in high school.  And the hysterectomy was done because I was full of big fibroid tumors and my uterus was tipped over backwards, pulling my bladder out of place.  But with all of that, I had regular periods every month.

So I hope this surgery will resolve all of this stuff, and get rid of my alien baby..... little faery willow. [;)]

Thank you ladies. [sm=flowers.gif]

~Fast Reply~

Yes, I've had them but fortunately, not often and they burst or go away on their own while quite small.  I normally get away with harsher cramping than usual, especially around the time of ovulation and beyond.

However one was extraordinarily painful to the point my other packed me right into the car to the ER.  He had to keep pulling the car over because I was so sick with accompanying nausea (I don't know why I 'euphamise' vomiting by saying 'nausea' but I do.  Strange. )

Anyway, the doctor on duty at first thought I had a kidney stone, the pain was so bad.  It was only through an ultrasound they correctly called the cyst.  While still very painful, it burst shortly thereafter.

cuddlemesoft -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 10:57:17 AM)

I have them and have had one causing severe bleeding that led to a emergency D&C. I also had one rupture last year. That was very painful but not an emergency. My general doctor said the pain is from the fluids causing surrounding tissue to swell.

CalifChick -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 11:45:53 AM)

Not much new to add, I've had them come and go on their own, but nothing that large.

By the way, if it makes you feel any better, 10 cm is only about 4 inches across.  Yes, you dilate to 10 cm when you're ready to give birth, but the baby's head doesn't necessarily just slip thru that 10 cm, well my big-headed babies didn't, they stretch their way thru it.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that's it's a benign cyst gone wacko.

This site describes the various types of ovarian cysts pretty well.

PanthersMom -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 1:10:39 PM)

i have three sisters.  sister number one had a grapefruit sized cyst removed a few yrs ago and has had a couple here and there that did not require surgery.  the two youngest girls have had to be put on the pill to regulate their periods which worries me as i had severe endometriosis and they seem to be following the same pattern i did.  i wish you a speedy recovery from the surgery and hope you don't have any further problems.  being female can suck sometimes and this is one of them.

He wanted to do the surgery the next day because of the reason you are not saying.  It is possible it is cancer.  You don't know without a biospy.  Let's pray that it is a cyst.

My sister went through it...although her doctor wasn't quite as on top as yours is.  She had a huge cyst...should have taken an hour and a half.  Surgery took 9 hours and they took out a tumor the size of a basketball.  It had touched everything.  She survived 5 years after that.
I've always felt it is best I go into medical issues educated and just  hope for the best.  Cyst..can be easily removed.  Hopefully none will grow back in its place.
Keep us updated.

corsetgirl -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 2:33:32 PM)

When I was first diagnosed as having cysts, I was very sad about it.  However, like BRNaughtyAngel, I have had a history of painful periods with a lot of bleeding.  I would up having a D&C when I was 37 years old and have been on birth control pills off and on since I was 13 years old.

I hope that your cyst will turn out to be benign and wish you well.  I always have copies of my recent tests and if I have any questions, I will look them up on the internet to be better inform.  You only have one life and I feel it is best to be educated about these areas.

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Ovarian Cysts - Anyone? (7/11/2008 2:43:01 PM)

You have an alien baby, BR .. .and I have a dermoid cyst.   When I found out and read the following about it I wanted to cringe for days:  "Dermoid cysts form from the cells that produce human eggs (ova). These cells are non-differentiated, which means that they have the potential to develop into any tissue in the human body. As a result, dermoid cysts often contain tissues such as hair, skin or teeth."  ICKKKKK!!!   ::shudder::   I just picture this little hairy thing with skin and teeth clinging to my ovary when I have bad cramps .... ugh.

Maybe I'll name it Faery ... lol

yes...prolific and excrutiating.  5 on the right and 2 on the left got the MD's attention at 19 y/o. after this slave was done replicating, they took out the uterus, right ovary, tube and cervix.  if there have been any on the left one since, they haven't attracted any attention.

the only cysts that bother this slave now are in the breast, and benign. (so far, so good!!!)

best of luck and speedy recovery to you!!!

LOL!  Yep, I've read about those!  Creeeeepy!

Well I will find out Tuesday what it is when they cut it out.

beth, I had cysts/lumps in my breasts in my 20s and had to have two removed.  Now they're just full of fibrous tissue which looks pretty scary on a mammogram.

I would like to thank you ladies again for all of the information, experiences and support!  [sm=yourock.gif]

Y'all are the best. [sm=cute.gif]
