This may sound like the oddest question ever.... but is it a big red flag if a Master, or really, any person won't/can't drive? Every single person I seem to have a relationship with in this lifestyle can't/won't drive at all, or not much. Often, they won't tell me why, or have a very lame excuse. I'm going bonkers. What does this mean?? And in all cases, it actually has nothing to do with DUI's. I've heard various excuses. Childhood issues, car accidents that scared them, no money for a car, their car was vandalized, they let their license expire, interstates make them nervouse, to they just want to rely on public transportation only..

Its unpaid child support! Seriously, thats the biggest reason I know for people not having a valid drivers license...

I had at one point simply forgot to go renew it.... Didn't even realize it until I went to cash a check out of town.

I drive, but I don't like to, especially, around here.  I won't go on the chicago freeways & will move hell to keep from doing so.  But I do drive to work, errands, ect.  I probably would not want to ever be with someone who never drove.  Been there, done that, got the scars to prove it & all that.  I am probably wrong, but I would expect in that instance that I would wind up being his driver.  It ain't going to happen.

Depends where they live. Most Manhattanites I know don't drive. I didn't until I moved out at age 35. Friends who moved into the city with valid licenses from their home towns have mostly let them expire. You can't afford a car in the city and you don't really need one. Although they come in useful when you try to get a Christmas tree back to your apartment, cabs won't let you tie it to the roof.

Other places where most if not all do have them and not having one makes life extremely difficult? Then I would wonder.

I drove before legal age and didn't get licensed for years.  My daughters work across the street from where they work so they never got around to needing a car until their mid twenties.  My son is 22 today and thinks that cars use too much energy, money, resources, ect and would rather spend his cash on things that do not become an obligation.  I think he saw me driving everyone here and there and decided he didn't want to be that driver. 
Not everyone wants to drive.  Not all areas require people to drive.  Some people don't feel the need to mimic the rest.  And if they are like my niece, sometimes it is just too scary.  Or like my mother who is the worst driver ever, and has had accidents each time out, we dont let her get a license!

Being in NYC, if someone said they don't have a car/didn't drive I wouldn't think much of it. As someone mentioned before, it's pretty silly to drive in Manhattan.

If they hailed from a place where you can't really get from point A to point B without driving then I would wonder.

OP: I don't see it as a red flag...it just makes them dependent on public transportation. I know how to drive and love driving, specially to good music...and while most Americans drive and own cars, no one is "obliged to". I myself always wanted to drive, and when due to travelling being in one palce for no more than 3 years I was unable to get my liscence until I turned 22...while I have a car I still commute to work on a public bus, not out of being scared or lazy to drive, but because to park in manhattan would cost me over $500 monthly which I find ridicolous. however driving to manhattan for leisure on a sunday is not bad and surprisingly empty coming from Jersey.

Maybe you are dating Doms who are too young or who do not have jobs that they can afford a car? It doesn't make them bad people...

None of them have children, and most of these people lived in *Indiana*. Usually they say it's because of a car accident. I mean, a red flag that .... they're unstable and .. yeah. Not good doms. What do you all think?

hermione83, not having a car does not make the Dominant...if things made someone personality wise, everyone would have cars for the sake of it...tangible items do not change the person. The only thing is that they do not have control over when they go and where they go as they please subject to a public bus schedule. It is a little strange that most of the Dominants you have been with had car accidents, I think they are young and felt silly telling you why they truly didn't have a car. A car does not make the man.

There aren't buses here. I can't fathom not driving. I don't particularly like it, but I worked an hour from where I lived at one point, I don't have a hometown and my family lives all over the country. I didn't grow up in manhattan and I actually go to where cows and horses live and there are nothing but trees and grass. How do you get to those places without a car? I'm not saying a car makes a man, but I am wondering if the lack of a car makes the man crazy. You're right - it does mean he has lost that control. And that lowers my opinion of them. I want them to control everything. I don't like the idea of doing all the visiting. I think a guy should be coming to see me, I'm a traditional sort of girl. It makes me feel wanted. And how can he kidnap me if he can't even come over, lol. Anyway, I can't imagine being married to someone who couldn't share the roadtrip driving.... what's the chances you live right where your family etc. are? I just don't understand.

And they did have silly careless young accidents. But so did I, several in fact.. but that's not going to keep me from the interstate, lol. I'm a good driver now. It's an absolute neccessity for most of the country, I would think... ... Why would you chose to give up your freedom at a young age?

I disagree if someone lives in Indiana and doesnt drive something is seriously fucked up... I couldnt imagine getting around Indiana without driving. As for "they dont have any children" - with due respect to the OP you dont know that. They could very easily have six children scattered across 6 states each with an unpaid support order preculding them from getting a license. Just because you dont see them in the park doesnt mean they arent out there in the world of legal process. I would say unpaid support orders are the biggest reason for lack of a DL, followed by DUI/DWI. As for what Thadius said about forgetting to renew it - yeah but I bet you drove right the hell down to the DPS / DMV and got it renewed as soon as you found out. Unless someone lives in an mass transit urban center / has more money than God / or has some physical disability such as legal blindness not driving in America is VERY VERY strange to me.

Thanks for making me feel less evil for being so upset about this. It's so weird I seem to meet a constant array of doms here who don't drive. And I'm 25, and they are usually around my age. It's not like these are 17 year olds. On another note, is there any way for me to survive and be happy with a guy who absolutely refuses to drive? I really don't believe they have kids or DUI's. I realize it is possible - but besides swearing otherwise, they are the goody-goody types like me. That's why we're attracted to each other.

Well, the state of Texas wont let me drive simply becuase I will get spasms in my lumbar spine that leaves me unable to control my legs for up to a few minutes.

Now if that excludes me from being a good dom, I would like to see the qualifications for a good sub.


I mean granted, the way some of the people around here drive what difference is it if suddenly I cant use my feet to hit the brakes?  Surely the inability to hit the brake pedal is not in the least bit dangerous to public safety?

Why not install hand controls in the car? I know a guy with no legs at all, as well as one with cerebal palsy that keeps him in a wheelchair and they both have valid Texas drivers license and cars with handicapped plates...
