NakedOnMyChain -> I Quit (11/14/2005 2:26:26 PM)

I quit smoking today. It feels like someone is running over my head with a Mac Truck while cackling maniacally, then hitting reverse to do it all again. And I'm loving every minute of it. I've been smoking for about five and a half years, nearly a pack a day. It got to the point where I couldn't walk up ten stairs without huffing and puffing, and if I didn't have a cigarette at least every hour, I'd be wheezing and coughing. Not pretty.

I was lying in bed the other day, thinking about walking outside to smoke (I always smoke outside), and it hit me "IT'S 30 F***ING DEGREES OUTSIDE! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!" That led to me thinking about wanting to live to see my kids and my grandkids, which led to me realizing how out of shape I am (I still look good, but I'm not healthy). It was a sudden epiphany that I need to get my life back in order, starting with kicking the smoking habit. I need to eat better, exercise, sleep at a normal time (I never go to bed until 6 AM), maybe meditate more. Of course, I couldn't do it all at once... I'd probably end up killing something cuddly and furry. So for now I'm just going to kick the butts. I feel awful... I mean REALLY awful, and I couldn't be happier or prouder of myself. Well, thanks for listening. If you need me I'll be in my joyous nauseous bubble.

congratulations!!! not an easy thing to do at all. super!

anthrosub -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 3:11:38 PM)

I started smoking when I was 15 (Marlboro's)...quit when I was 18...started again at 22...quit again a year later...then started again around 28 (Merits from this time forward) and smoked a couple more years...then quit at 30 and started yet again at 32 and smoked for about 9 years. Each time I quit it got harder to do. So my advice is to stay off the smokes once you get past that point where the thought enters your head, "Oh, one or two tonight won't hurt." That's all it takes and you're back to playing the game with yourself.

To give you some incentive...what made me quit for good was the morning I stepped into the shower...coughed from being congested...and spit blood into the tub! That will really wake you up! Fortunately for me it was a raw spot on one of my vocal chords that took about 6 months to heal (and a biopsy to make sure it wasn't cancer).

There's nothing anyone can say to make it easy...all we can do is give you support and information.

Best of luck!
anthrosub

That sounds nearly identical to my smoking history. It was always easy for me to quit, up till the past two years. I believe changing hormones and the lost of two siblings made it that much more difficult. I'm not sure, but stress does play into it somewhere, I'm sure.

NakedOMC, CONGRATS! to you on kicking the habit. Nicotine addiction isn't an easy habit to give up.

Presently, I am four months quit, but my mindset is so different from the other times that I quit. I'm not saying its easy this time, I just realized that the stress I felt before lighting up is still there and no matter how many times I light up, it's still going to be there. Another reason is thinking about the obsurdity of giving away my money so freely when I could be putting it to a much better use, like putting away the money for my future vactions, oh yeah, and that cancer thing isn't something to look forward too. There's a great site that I find very helpful called,

Quitnet.com

Wishing you continued success with your quit.

I have been thinking a lot of the same thoughts
NOMC and will have to go outside at MsN's to smoke. I would
love to give myself that gift for Xmas or the New Year!

GOOD LUCK!!!

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 6:25:42 PM)

Thank you all so much! Seriously, it means the world to me that you are all so supportive. I've gnawed through about fifteen safety suckers so far today, but it's going to be worth it. No random coughing, no smelling like an ashtray, no more shortness of breath, and no more having to go outside for a smoke when it's freezing! WOO! Ty's so happy that I quit, now I get to go shopping tomorrow!
Anyway, thank you guys! And Lucky A, you know I love ya' doll.

(I'm going to try to come back and read what you all wrote whenever I want a ciggy. It really helps.)

KatyLied -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 6:38:38 PM)

Ah, I'm late to the party. I wish you all the best. I quit after a 7 year pack/day habit. It's difficult to quit, but it can be done. And it can be done without looking back.

SeargentDave -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 6:41:37 PM)

Good for you, I smoked for 17 byears and quit, just be carefull of the dreaded weight gain!!

windchymes -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 7:33:24 PM)

I won't offer advice or empathy, because I've never smoked, but I do give you a big congratulations for having to guts to do it!

Good luck!

Way to go. Stick with it.

In the end, you will realize how badly you (used to) stink.

I smoked for almost 13 years... Up to a pack a day when I quit (two and a half years ago)...

Now, smokers are the most vial smelling people I've ever met. And I feel bad saying that, but really, you do smell.

Case in point..

My mom came by this weekend. She smokes, has all my life (and most of hers). I always thought Mom smelled great.

Friday, she walked in the house, and I smelled wet cat litter, we live near a refinery, and often I smell this smell... I was about to say something, when I realized the wet cat litter smell was my mother's smokes mingling with her perfume.

You will stick to it! Chew gum, cases of it if you have too. I also munched on sunflower seeds til my tongue hurt.. Then if I tried to smoke, it burned like raw flesh because of my sore, sore tongue.

Your kids thank you, the air thanks you, your lungs thank you, and your skin thanks you! You won't end up with Old Lady Wrinkley Face..!!! :D

I quit smoking today.

NOMC, congrats. I quit on the 6th. I however, am not really having any problems with it. Probably the fact that I am spending all my time in the nursing home with my dying mother has kept my mind off of any cigarette cravings I might have had. And the look on her face when I tell her I've quit is worth any discomfort I might experience in the future. I will not start smoking again, when this is over. I promised her I would never smoke again, and it is a promise I intend to keep, for her.

Just thought I'd say something congrats on quitting the smoking I smoke myself but I don't have the addiction which is strange I mean I know some people that chain smoke at college but seeing them doesn't make me want to light up every 5 seconds so I guess smoking affects different people in different ways hope this public admission doesn't make people hate me or something. Thanks, tom

MadameDahlia -> RE: I Quit (11/14/2005 10:31:24 PM)

Congrats on quitting.

Any addiction will be difficult to untangle yourself from. But when you weigh the two options against each other it's so very easy to see what you gain in not sucking down another cigarette.

A friend of mine makes a Pro/Con list to help put things into perspective whenever she's got an important decision. She says it gives her focus.

I hope that you maintain your focus while you work on removing this from your life.

RosaB -> RE: I Quit (11/15/2005 12:27:43 PM)

Angelus04
I felt the same way for years, up until those past couple of years before I quit, I was a pack a week smoker. But a little over two years ago, things changed and I was nearly up to a pack a day. I could still go hours or days without a cigerette, but as time went on, it became much more difficult. Just be careful and if you can completely give them up, this might be the time to do so.

And to anyone that's trying to quit, you don't have to do it alone. Give the site Quitnet.com a try for support.
