i agree with whoever mentioned O-lan from Pearl Buck's "The Good Earth"...a true submissive if there ever was one, took endless abuse without complaint and with total acceptance of her fate, went her whole life with barely a selfish thought.

of course i also have to mention the main character from one of my favorite films, Bess in "Breaking the Waves." in many ways she reminds me of myself and the love and power my Master has over me.

Me.

Self-involved I understand but I think I am best qualified based on the criteria (save for the "favorite" part).

Break it down player.

Have fun.

favourite literary sub would have to include:  Sherlock Holmes.
A bit of a brat, which I normally detest, and a druggie, ditto, but totally submissive to, in love with, and beaten by The Woman, Irene Adler.

Female:  Beauty  in the erotic adventures of sleeping beauty by A.N. Roquelaure (aka Ann Rice)

Male:  Laurent  from the same series

editted to add a thought or two.... it is in my opinion that even submissives can be excellent leaders,  great submissives know how to stand their ground and still keep their leadership in tact.  a "look" and body language often speak louder than words.
just because someone can express anger and disappointment without yelling, doesn't make them aggressive or dominant.

p.s.  i would've agreed with RedMagic1 but in my heart, Jesus of Nazareth wasn't fictional. that's just me.

joy, you're fictional? LOL

I think mine would have to be Skeeve from Robert Asprin's "Myth" series. He's always a follower, but is molded by the strong personalities around him. As he gains more personal power, (both literally and figuratively) we find out that he's actually a pretty upright guy, with a sense of ethics that make him shine.

The most famous story-submissive in the world is Jesus of Nazareth.

I think we'd need some evidence on this one...being leader of the foremost religion in the world isn't a good case for submissiveness. I

Does that imply that a submissive or slave cannot be a totally awesome leader outside of thier relationship? Some of the most amazing submissives and slaves I have ever met were wonderful leaders.

@ AggressiveBlkDom, I just started one of those books!
@OP, This is a strange one, but if anyone's ever seen The Music Man, Marion. I grew up watching that movie, so I guess maybe she was my first sub role model? Granted, a little feisty at first, haha.

well, that's pretty simple!!

Matthew 26:36-44
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. Then He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me." And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as Thou wilt." And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? "Keep watching and praying, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Thy will be done." And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more....

Even if this isn't your belief system, we pretty much all know how this story ends, and I gotta say that at least in my book, there's not anyone out there that I can think of who can rival what Jesus did - regardless if it's true or just fiction.

Second on my list would be Mary Magdalene - at least in regard to the time she washed Jesus' feet. I NEVER understood the whole thing about washing his feet and drying them with her hair...till recently. Now, it's particularly poignant.

Have you started reading the series from the beginning MissMenagerie? The first book is Kushiel's Dart. I would HIGHLY recommend reading this series in it's exact order because of the books being so detailed and their story arc being so established by the previous books. While it starts out pretty slow in detailing the history and established beliefs of that world, it is soooooo crucial to understanding the references throughout the series.

Maureen O'Hara in any movie she was in with John Wayne.  He always seemed to be spanking her.

I think the key group to think of here are "sidekicks".
So, um. Gabrielle or Xena, depending on how you assess the relationship. ;P

I think Gabrielle is defintely a sub... and my favorite bit of fan fic showing this side of the Xena girls is called Have Whip, Will Travel and perfectly captures the series.

Another favorite is Mackenzie Blaise, from the online serial novel, Tales of M.U.

Skeeve?!  Now there is a name I have not heard in awhile, and certainly was not expecting.  I haven't read those books in ages.  good stories though.  :)

Smee, from Peter Pan.
Oliver, from The Song of Roland. He was totally Roland's bitch.
Ariel, from Shakespeare's The Tempest. Granted, he liked to top from the bottom. Cheeky little brat.
Mark, from Rent.  He was everyone's bitch.

No one is remembering the medium of our times... one that happens to be clickable.

Sluggy Freelance: It's Sluggy.  Everyone knows Sluggy, unless they live in a cave.  Oasis, and of course Aylee, especially considering her human form, are total submissives.
Penny Arcade: Gabriel is totally a sub.  And a damned good artist.  But he's so subby he gets me going sometimes, and I'm straight.
The Phoenix Requiem: Anya is a gem of a submissive... strong purpose in life, but that purpose is informed by her submissive nature.
Flipside: Maytag the Jester is an absolutely delightful submissive.  So, so strong, her submissiveness is the source of her power.  Very fun comic.
Earthsong: Willow is a submissive... just a guess, but I'm pretty sure.  Also, I suspect Earthsong is too; she's just had to step up under the circumstances.
Casey and Andy: Casey is probably not normally a sub, but he's totally Satan's bitch.  All things considered, I probably would be too under the circumstances.
And finally...
A Miracle of Science: the entire collective consciousness of Mars.  It's arguable that the whole thing is a submissive... a very smart, very in-control submissive, but that's the vibe I get.  That's a whole lot of submissiveness.

Damn, that is so true. I didnt think about it before but Tycho has his way with Gabe all the time....usually ending with Gabe sputtering some hillarious nonsense in defense of himself. Have you played their video game PA: On The Rain-Slick Precipace of Darkness? (try saying that three times fast)
