For those of you who are against breeding dogs, move along please, don't spoil my moment.

For the rest of you, most of you know that we have a pair of Shih Tzus.  Both are happy, healthy little dogs (yes, we had them checked before breeding - good hips, knees, teeth, and ears, which are the problem areas for most Shih Tzus), and Princess Pandemonium is officially pregnant.  She's about 5 of 9 weeks along, so in about a month, I'll probably have puppy pics up on my profile *grin*

I'm excited.  Pandy seems to be enjoying pregnancy so far - although she keeps running off to find a place to nest when we let her out ... she keeps forgetting the joys of air conditioning (she comes in when she gets hot lol).  The other dogs don't seem to have noticed yet lol, we'll see how they all do with the puppies when we introduce them.

Anyway, I just had to share [:D]

[8D]  I carry around pics of the cats and dogs like most people carry around pics of their replicants (seriously, on my cell, I have pics of the cats, the dogs, and our niece and nephew .... lol)  I'm eventually going to have some printed out to show off at work (can't have my cell in there lol).

Congrats... though I thought you were talking about dogs, not chew toys. [8D]

Glad to know that you did make sure the breeding pair were in good health, and devoid of some of the genetic problems. I hope you get much enjoyment for many years to come.

My Shih Tzus are tough, I'll have you know, Thadius ... They wrestle with the Boxer, Pitbull, and German Shepherd on a daily basis ... and they don't always lose lol

My little girl is the best though, she outruns the Boxer, then circles around and trips her to pounce on her [:D]... Ray (the male) just kind of lays in wait and pounces

Are dogs only pregnant for 9 weeks?

According to what I've read, Shih Tzus average about 9 weeks - other breeds are a bit longer, I think.

63 days is considered the standard for all breeds. Anything between 58 and 65 is considered normal.

You should get a puppy box setup and start having the dog spend time in it. Make sure to have a couple of comforters or quilts you don't care about too much as a liner so it won't be too hard to clean out the mess. The dam will eat the afterbirth but there will be assorted fluids and the puppies are messy things for the first few weeks.

Keep an eye on the female while she is nursing, puppies can injure her nipples when they suck and infections like that can be nasty.

Make sure to talk to your vet about dew claw removal and when to get it done, a day or so after birth probably.

Thanks for the advice, but Holly has bred dogs before - we know how to do this.  And for the record, not all dogs need their dew claws removed.

You said it was a first time so I tossed out some stuff I learned from my brother.

As to dew claws that's why I said to check with a vet.

Of course not - We already have 6 dogs lol.  Depending on the colors we get from them, though, we may keep one.  If we get a little silver puppy, we're probably going to have to keep it. 

I want to look for a blue male to breed Pandy or one of her pups to (probably one of her pups) but blues are SOOOOO freakin expensive. 

Anyway, I'm just home from work, stressed out over a ton of things (money issues, the offenders are all brats, etc), so I think I'm going to sedate myself and go to sleep for a couple of hours.  I'll be back later to tell you all how the mom-to-be is doing lol

Congrats on the puppies!! That's so awesome to hear. I'm looking to forward to seeing pictures. I was introduced to Shih-Tzus in Australia by a wonderful boy named Tang. He had a thing for my clean underwear. [&:]  He would carry them all over the house. They ended up looking like Dracula got to them. [sm=lol.gif]

She's doing pretty well.  Holly and rob took her to visit family the other day to get her more socialized (we don't have many visitors here, and we can't take her very many places because she gets car sick *sigh*).  It apparently went quite well - she does love people, she just doesn't get to see very many. 

She's been having some morning sickness, and eats everything that she can get her teeth into lol.  She also likes to lay in my lap and have her belly rubbed [:)]  She's still gaining weight.  Last time we weighed her, she was at 11.4 ... before she got preg, she was 9.8 lol  Quite a gain for a little dog.
