ORIGINAL: Strongmindbody Question: would this likely work for you if you could do it, even if you made it a significant focus in your life? Or is it more likely to somehow fail just as diets tend to fail? It would work for ME because I'm already in the process of changing my relationship with food and redefining what my lifestyle changes are going to be. However, for your friend, unless he is ready to accept he needs to lose the weight, and stop making excuses for not eating right/exercising, it won't work. Diets WILL work, if done correctly. Everyone is on a diet. Everyone eats, therefore they have a diet. The question is: Is the diet healthy or not? Metabolism plays the MAIN role. A 1000 calorie diet a day will NOT help you lose weight. Your body will store the fat because it goes into survival mode. In order to get your metabolism up, you need to feed it. Yes, you NEED to eat. The correct combination of good carbs, proteins, fats etc. I'm a big damn girl, I'm tall and I'm chubby, no doubt about that (2 kids in 2 years will make ANYONE fat). I've spoken to a nutritionist and have been told, in order to lose weight, I need to take in approximately 1900 calories per day and BURN approximately 2500 per day. The start is hard because the metabolism is weak. As I progress, it gets easier. It's a very slow process, but it's SUPPOSED to be slow. The slower you lose weight, the more likely you are to keep it off. Once you hit your optimal weight, the issue becomes maintenance. Yes, people plateau and this is where most diets will fail. When you plateau, you could go a month, sometimes two, without losing a POUND. Eventually, your body will catch up but by the time it's ready to, most people have given up. You have to recondition your body to work for you and not against you, that takes YEARS, not months! MOST people who are overweight have a food addiction. That doesn't mean everyone does. PCOS sufferers put on weight, even though dieting. Thyroid issues can cause weight gain as well. Depression is a large contributor as well. Point being, if there's not a medical reason, the correct combination of food and exercise can and will result in weight loss. To the poster who said their doctors put her on a 500 calorie a day liquid diet. Those doctors need their licenses stripped from them. I've never heard of a more ludicrous practice in my life. Not only is it unhealthy, it will not work. No matter HOW many vitamins are supplemented by IV. And, by your own admission, you are proof of that. It is physically IMPOSSIBLE to lose more than 1-2 pounds of fat per week. IMPOSSIBLE. You can lose water weight, you can lose muscle, but not actual fat. And being one of those people who suffered the "You're fat and worthless" childhood, you can certainly get past that as well. It's not easy, hard and hateful words about how we're viewed have a way of delineating how we view ourselves and does a number on our own self worth. However, as soon as one realizes the person who made those comments were selfish, mean-spirited asses who were only looking to make their pathetic selves feel better, they'll see that every person, large or thin, is necessary, special, unique and BEAUTIFUL. Wow that was long....anyway...hi, my name is "b" and i'm a sexy, chubby (fat) woman. i LOVE who i am as a person. i'm comfortable in my skin. i do realize, however, in order to be "healthy" and "there" for my kids' future, i need to take back control of my life. And, no one can do that for me. i have to do it for myself. *nod* *grin*
