What does intelligent conversation mean?

It means, "don't bore me."

*chuckles at the "don't bore me" comment.

To the OP: If you need to ask what intelligent conversation is, you are incapable of it.

I think being intelligent means different things to different people. To me, it means that the person is able to stimulate my mind in some way. Able to keep up with me in a conversation. Able to beat me at Scrabble occasionally! I once dated a man who had two topics of conversation: football and parties. That got old very fast. I need to be able to talk to the person I am with about a myriad of subjects and not have them losing interest because they don't understand half of what I am saying or don't care. I need to be able to tell them about a book I am reading or an opinion I have about some world event or news story I read and hear their opinion as well. I don't always need them to agree with my opinions and if they did, I think it would be very boring indeed. But I need them to have an opinion!

And no, I don't think talking about the new shoes they bought makes someone unintelligent, but I agree that if that is the only topic of conversation the person is capable of, then yes, they are definitely not going to fit my idea of what being intelligent is. I am also not a stickler on grammar or spelling, but if there are so many grammatical errors or spelling errors that I focus on those instead of what the person is saying, then there is an issue. Just my two cents worth.

I pray that someday I will be have the oppurtunity to engage in one of them there intelligent conversational talks.  The simple fact is that if I am involved in it, that already rules out the possibility of it being intelligent (let alone conversation).  I am often reminded around here just how wrong my world view is, they don't have to be so damn blunt (feigning tears).

However there is hope, I recently read a book by this doctor that waxed on about the pros and cons of eating rotten eggs with a side of pork.  I am hoping to pick up some of his other works to increase my understanding of how fish group, it is call "One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish", I will post a commentary when I complete it.

Hey Thad somebody has a "What are you currently reading"thread going right now,if you hurry you could pop over there with this stuff

Katy. U R pretty. Do you like flip flops or crocs?
Can I C UR toes?

Intelligent conversation to me means that I don't have to dumb down my vocabulary. Text speak doesn't bother me much but really awful grammar makes me grind my teeth. I like to be able to discuss things outside of sexual positions (on occasion ) and there are things in life important to me like books that I like to be able to discuss.

I will never again compromise myself by being forced into having to dumb down things in order to talk to someone in a relationship, unless they're a not too bright cousin of which I have dozens.

Life is too short. I go for what I want now because that is what makes me happy.

Katy has to talk about shoes.  She obviously can't discuss hats.

Well, maybe I'm aiming low these days, but to me, "intelligent conversation" on the web is made up of:

1) everyone more or less sticking the the topic of conversation.
2) There is an attempt at eliminating spelling and gramatical errors
3) direct, ad hominem attacks are either at 0, or damn close to it.(a specific persons ideas, however, are fair game.)

Moreover, these forums, is should be remembered, are here for expressing our opinions, and our feelings, AND expressing the facts behind recent events. Collar Me's mesage forum is hardly the frickin' 10 o'clock news...

Oh, and Thad, when you finish your Dr.s books, you might move on to "My Pet Goat." I understand our President found it so engrossing, he couldn't put it down... even in a time a great crisis.

Indeed, I believe his work could be considered revolutionary, and may lead to hours and hours of intelligent conversation.  Tis but a small dream, for somebody with a heart that is two sizes to small.

I quite agree....his dissertation on the anthropological studies of Sylvester McMonkey McBean and the ramifications of having 'stars upon thars' was genius!

For me, intelligent conversation doesn't include mammarian inquiries, phallic distortions, comparisons of current attire, or phrases such as, "mmmmmmmmmm" and "yesssssssssssssssss".

Edited to fix one typo...dammit!

Intelligent conversation to me is any conversation that educates, enlightens, or otherwise causes me to see something from an angle that I hadn't noticed before.  This can be as simple as seeing something through the eyes of a toddler, to talking to an elderly person.  It can also come from someone who pumps gas, or someone who is highly educated. I think almost everyone has something of value to offer.  The only real turn off for me is when a person spends a lot of time complaining about his/her life.

Intelligent conversation means you can follow a topic, without making any unnecessary and randomly idiotic offturns. It means you are capable of having an adult conversation about anything, be that politics, shoes, video games, clothes or entertainment. You are capable of having an pinion and even an argument without needing to make it a personal attack to get your point across. It means have more range than talking about just yourself and your interests and your kink.
For me, it also means people need to be smart enough to use words correctly when they speak. There is nothing LESS  impressive than someone using big words to make themselves look smarter and then using them incorrectly. Intelligent conversation online also means spelling out all your words, putting effort into your sentences and readability and using spellcheck. If you want to be impressive, you need to make the effort.
