As long as they are beliefs, as opposed to  "borgliefs"

I feel no particular need to be "assimilated"

*Takes a long cool look at the Leatherist and considers "assimilating" him.

To the OP: I am spiritual, not religious, and have the best of all possile tolerances for your ism until you start trying to convert me. Then that stops. I have very little use for fundamentalist religion of any kind. I love to talk spiritual philosophy, but it needs to be a real debate, I've no need to evangelize you.

I am a pagan working at a christian based mental health facility for children.  I have to be fairly tolerant.

I tend to be patient as long as someone respects my right to my beliefs.  If they cross that line with their preachy bullshit, I make them respect my right to tell them to "Shut the fuck up."

Not at all.
We have "Freedom of Religion" in the U.S. and that means people can practice their religion as they see fit but it does *NOT* mean that I or anyone else have to show any kind of respect for the "beliefs" of others!
At best it's "toleration."

I'm pretty tolerant of most things...except intolerance. It seems to me if one's convictions are strong, someone else's aren't likely to upset them.

I also linger in the area between agnostic and atheism, but lean more toward atheism.

I usually jump at the chance to discuss topics like religion and such with others when they seem to want to have a fair and intelligent discussion. Unfair, to me, is when the other party is simply unable to accept the fact that even small or minor details in the religion's teachings could have been manipulated, changed, or skewed in some way by those who influenced the religion over years, even centuries. That, to me, is just unrealistic.

Also, when the person brings up a story or event believed to be true within their belief structure and presents it as fact. "Oh, that really happened! Its a fact." with absolutely no evidence to prove it, is about the time when I bow out of the conversation. That such a peeve of mine. Beliefs are beliefs, fact is fact, and if one cannot acknowledge the difference, I'm really not into further discussions on the subject.

Aside from situations like the above, I do enjoy having my thinking and beliefs challenged. Just be fair about it or I'll have to smite thee!

I used to sit and have daily conversations with a friend in Iowa who happens to be a minister.  He actually acted as if he wanted to learn something about a different belief rather than to ridicule it.  It became like a sort of comparative religions class quite often.   I enjoyed those conversations more than most can imagine.  He respected my right to believe differently and he never tried to impose his system on me.
Most people cannot sit down and hold a conversation like that with a follower of a different branch of their faith without bad feelings.  I grew up being taught by the first baptist church of intolerance that all nonbaptists were going to hell and it was our duty to show them the light.

Lol ... If everyone in Iowa rocked like you or my minister friend, I would not have moved away.  Actually, the snow would probably have chased me away anyway.

Speaking for myself I would belive in God but how you worship is up to the individual.
A lot of folk misuse religion projecting onto it conflicts that have more to do with ethinic /religious differences.

Coming from Northern Ireland i have a fair bit of experince of this.

(He) I am a very religious person. But I don't go into any other details unless someone can't help but to continue and bark their opinions down my throat.

Long as those beliefs respect others' freedom and don't prejudice women, gays, or minorities.

Well, the agnostics, athetists and spiritual-but-not-religious have all weighed in as to how much we dislike being 'preached at'....but I guess my question is....when it happens, do we make any effort to be tolerant of the one doing the preaching?

This certainly does not mean being disrespected yourself, but do we even pause a minute to realise they feel they have a duty towards us to attempt to get us to join them?  Are we  respectful towards them when we turn them away?  (Course IMO it'd be better if these religions taught people to look after their own conduct and leave others to do the same but that's another issue.)

I get a lot of soliticing here...and I tell the Jehohavah's Witnesses and Mormons that I'm Catholic and -- bingo -- they say buh bye.  It's amazing to me, but it works and I never have to say "I think you're being a jerk'.

I tend to be tolerant and respectful of other people's religious beliefs. I have to be, I am in their homes delivering their babies. I have families that don't eat meat, don't believe in outside medical care, don't allow blood products, always wear their veils or frontier dress in public etc.

However, I have found my beliefs are NOT respected by the majority of these very groups I deliver babies for. So, I shut my mouth and refuse to discuss my pagan leanings with a bent towards nature religions. It seems those of us with beliefs outside the mainstream have to be tolerant because people inside the mainstream are sure going to try to shove their beliefs down our throats no matter what.

I listen with respectful aloofness, because they are not going to get me to join their church or religion and for my own safety's sake in the bible belt I simply do not discuss my preferences with clients.

Be well,
Sage

Yanno, I have heard this same thing from other Pagans....for some reason otherwise rational people feel free to take the gloves off when they get to 'confront' someone who is a Pagan.  I never really understood why this religion is singled out for derision when we feel like tip-toeing around most others.

To be tolerant of the person in a broad sense, yes. I feel the planet is indeed big enough to hold the both of us.

But there's a point that I can reach when being 'preached at' where I will say, "That's enough. I've had enough." It takes quite a  lot to get me there though.

The beginning and end of this discussion, by Frank Zappa.

( You can skip to 06:45 as soon as it buffers for you. )

00:00 You are what you is.
04:20 The Mud Club
06:45 The Meek Shall Inherit NOTHING.

Some take the bible
For what it's worth
When it says that the meek
Shall inherit the Earth

Well, I heard that some sheik
Has bought New Jersey last week
'N you suckers ain't gettin' nothin'

Is Hare Rama really wrong
If you wander around
With a napkin on
With a bell on a stick
An' your hair is all gone...
(The geek shall inherit nothin')

You say yer life's a bum deal
'N yer kinda up against the wall...
Well, people, you ain't even got no
kinda Deal at all

'Cause what they do
In Washington
They just takes care
of NUMBER ONE
An' NUMBER ONE ain't YOU
You ain't even NUMBER TWO

Those Jesus Freaks
Well, they're friendly but
The shit they believe
Has got their minds all shut

An' they don't even care
When the church takes a cut
Ain't it bleak when you got so much nothin'

(So whaddya do)
Eat that pork
Eat that ham
Laugh till ya choke
On Billy Graham
Moses, Aaron 'n Abraham...
They're all a waste of time
'N it's yer ass that's on the line
(IT'S YER ASS THAT'S ON THE LINE)

Do what you wanna
Do what you will
Just don't mess up
Your neighbor's thrill
'N when you pay the bill
Kindly leave a little tip
And help the next poor sucker
On his one way trip...

That sums it up nicely.

On paper they all seem to offer some perspective on the human condition... but in practice it is the human condition that leads to intolerance and the other problems.

So unless some certain religion is getting their members from an entirely different species or planet, that means all religions are going to suffer from the same problem.
Some express it a little differently, some even try to avoid the most egregious behaviors, but in the end all religions are nothing more than a bunch of people playing games over a bunch of words, sprung from some origination myth.

I will be discrete if they are, tolerant if they are, curious if they are and I have no tolerance for intolerance.  If you actually subscribe to a dogma that says your are fundamentally superior to the shmoe standing next to you because you believe a certain world view that he does not share, regardless of what his world view actually is, then we are highly unlikely to get along.
