I think one thing some are missing is that nobody here is saying that you should do nothing when members of a religion are causing harm to themselves or others.  That is not tolerance.   It is enabling criminal behavior.
However, to label a religion you disagree with as ignorance merely for being different is simply arrogance on your part.  I will not join in lampshade worship or in the Church of the Garden Gnome.  However, as long as they do not hurt themselves or others, they can do whatever their hearts desire.  It is their Constitutional right.

Actually, in previous threads on the FDLS/Jeffs religious group, more than one poster here made big deal out of saying that even if they are harming children, we are bound to respect their 'poly' beliefs, and that prosecuting such criminal behavior is a violation of the Constitution.
Similar views were expressed a while back about practices from other cultures that caused physical harm, and even death.

What has been conveyed in this thread is that calling something a religion should exempt it from ridicule, or criticism.

And in my book, no group of people is that special.   If I have to hold something sacred, you can bet that it certainly isn't going to be something that demands to be treated as such.

If that is too egalitarian for some folks, they will just have to get over themselves.

~fast reply~

I am an atheist. I wasn't until my return to school and started trying to make sense of what made sense to me. I am, however, somewhat superstitious, and feel a vague sense of dread for admitting that I don't believe in a higher power ... so ... I have a tolerance for other people's religious beliefs more than I can, at times, tolerate my own.

Im not tolerant of any religion that promotes hatred of a people.  This includes Catholicism, Christianity (such as baptists, protistants, ect.), Judaism, Islam... I tolerate the people of the religion just fine as long as they dont preach to me, but I do not tolerate their faith.  If your book says gays are going to hell, children born to an unwed mother are going to hell for 10 generations, to flat out kill someone like in the quran, or that women are less intelligent, or should be beneath a man I want nothing to do with that.  The bible, the quran, and the torah all say this... So they are bad for my juju.  :D
