BDSM lit is wonderful, especially some of the classical work. BDSM smut is irritating.

We started with the Beauty series. We have also enjoyed, BEST S/M EROTICA VOL.2,  THE MARKETPLACE,  BEAUTY &SUBMISSION, and PLAYING WITH PAIN.  The last two are non-fiction, but do tell  of some cool scenes. Then you have classics like, STORY OF  O,  VENUS IN FURS,  and the works of De Sade. I have just ordered a book of the last. Don't really expect it to be very "hot", but enjoy learning as well as being turned on.  Lots of erotica online, but the quality really varies. Really like some of the how to books, great info for starting out. I have to check out this Kushiel's series!

I like well written novels... didn't like Ann Rice's Beauty series  though as the series progressed toward the last book i thought it did improve.

Anne Rice is a weird writer. Her series always goes south for me after the first book. Didn't like Beauty at all...Also wasn't so into Kushiel after the second book.

And recs for tasteful Femdom fic?

I'm a voracious reader and the BDSM genre is no exception.

I've read the first two Marketplace books (quite good), several 1970's era BDSM erotica novels (hit and miss), most of the Gor books (repititious vis-a-vis males hammering home the whole you-are-slave message to women but great battle scenes and a "300" mentality I like), a few Sharon Green books (can't find then in used bookstores nowadays, but nice scenes), a number of books in the House of Gord library (eye popping technology-based restraints but very non-consentual), some Marquis DeSade (no one should have ever ever ever ever submitted to that nut job).  I'd include some of Stephen R. Donaldson books here (especially the Gap series) but they are not specifically BDSM and focus more on psychological power struggles than kink.

The last one I read was "To Serve and Submit" by Susan Wright, about a girl in pre-medieval northern Europe who is trained to be a voluntary sex slave.  A very good read.  Avoid her "Slave Trade" book though.  Horrible storytelling.

Since you ask, the only other thing I have to say on the subject is I wish there was more ethnic diversity in the BDSM book genre (I have an interracial fetish too).  That's starting to change in photography and videos (hi Cinnamon Love), but Caucasians and Asians still represent 99% of characters in BDSM books.  A Gord book had Hispanic/Native Americans.  Several Gor books showcased different ethnicities. If anyone knows of other books with prominent non-white characters I'd like to hear of them.

the Snape/Harry Potter fic that got me interested in BDSM.

http://www.walkingtheplank.org/archive/viewseries.php?seriesid=84 Cambiare Podentes...if I hadn't already been into BDSM, that would have done it. Also-I know totally need to have a bonding ceremony at some point in my life. Mmm, Snape/Harry.

As far as BDSM fiction...for some reason, it tends to bug the crap out of me. I'm not talking about porn...most of the stuff over at literotica and bdsmlibrary is fine with me. However, the book series, like "Beauty" and "O" and "To Serve and Submit" bug me like nothing else.

I don't know why I'm such an aberration, but I think it's the characters. They spend so much time whining on about how submissive they are and how much they love their masters and yada yada yada. I think when it gets to the point that their whole life is submission, it starts to annoy me.

My problem is that, while the books are complete fantasy, the characters also are, and are completely one-dimensional. BDSM novels, at least the ones I've read, have a brainless piece of fluff (with great tits) for a main character. She hates her master...but she loves what he does. She loves her master, but she hates what he does. She runs away/protests because she hates him, but she loves him. Eventually, he finds her, punishes her, they reconcile, she is content with her submissive nature. Real deep character development there. Bravo, authors. The kinkiness pushes aside the need for any actual effort on the part of the author (apart from thinking about what to hit/fuck braindead heroine with). Other fantasy novels (traditional ones with dragons and magic and twue wuv), particularly the ones I most enjoy, have a fantastical setting and real characters.

Perhaps I just have lower expectations of porn.

I do love reading...and have enjoyed many, many scenes of a sexual nature in thrillers, etc. which I now realise have a deep D/s component...but I like actual BOOKS with paper and pages and stuff...I just cannot get into reading anything book-length on line....though I did get through all of the 'Story of O' (yawn).  I'm limited to what my local library will supply...and I'm rather amazed at the huge volume of romance (read: soft porn) and low to zero volume of anything D/s driven....at least titles I've searched for.  Gheesh, I kinda expected the library to be a bastion of free speech....and it turns out at least here...nope...not really.   Or else there are no kinky librarians, but in my imagination, they ALL are, so that'd be a huge disappointment.

Well constructed prose can arouse you like no pictures ever could.

I remember as a kid reading a description of how this guy got seduced.  It gave me a hell of an erection.  I suppose the words seduced me too.  They drew me in and painted a picture in my head.  That picture got me aroused.

It's ultimately ideas that gets us aroused.  Words can put ideas and emotions in your head like no picture ever could.

OP, I too, prefer written erotica to just photos. (They both have their place, but I prefer to have my mind fully engaged when thinking about sex and athe scene.) I prefer a lot of Pat (Patrick) Califia's work. "Macho Sluts" is probably some of the best one-handed reading you can find. But there's also Carol Queen, Aaron Travis, and the works of Gord.

The Anne Rice "Beauty" novels are fun, but don't read them as any kind of "how-to." They're just pure fantasy.

The Gor books are fine as fantasy too, (rather shoddily written though) but some people want to turn them into a religion. In that capacity, they're pretty dangerous.I'd avoid them, IMHO.

The Marketplace is a fun series, but it's a little too idealized for my taste.

There also seems to be a whole subculture of BDSM vampire stories piling up out there. A few of them have even gone mainstream in their appeal.

Happy reading!

For my birthday last month, my husband bought me an Amazon Kindle. It's an electronic book reader. I'm a die-hard hardcover book reader, so I was very skeptical. But as I've used it and gone online searching for compatible downloadable books, I like it. When I'm reading, no one can tell WHAT I'm reading, which has its advantages. I haven't yet searched for BDSM or kink friendly books, I think that'll have to be my next project....

Anyone writing downloadable books, please consider publishing it for the Kindle. You'll make me a happy camper.

Stories definitely do more for me than straight up porn.  I always find myself critiquing camera angles and lighting and acting and all of that whenever I watch a porno.

But stories... awwwyeah.  I'm going to shamelessly plug Akasha's stuff, especially Space Age Love Song, as being at the top of my list for great, um, "inspiration."  There was also another one by an author named Snidely, I think, called B&D Academy.  It holds a lot of meaning to me regarding someone who will always have a very special place in my heart.

Hello! I guess it's because I love reading in general, but I just love erotic BDSM-type stories. If you read stories, too, and you like to read them on lit erotica, What are some of your favorite stories or authors? If you have any, or if not, do you have any fav places to read them? Or, let me know anything else you'd like to say about the subject! For example, I often times like to read my porn rather than watch it  all though that's good too, of course, there is something about reading it that turns me on so much to visualize it in my own mind and spark my creativity (I guess because I'm a writer? haha) Well, take care!
PS This was my first post ever! Please dont make fun of me!

Hi passion and welcome to collarme.
i am a writer too but i don't really enjot reading others. I struggle to find enough time to write as it is least of all read. also at times when there is a new contract or deadline my own writing HAS to be done even if I am having a 'bad' day.
(One of the things i have learned to do is to write an A4 page a day:)
There are very few writers whose style i like and this has nothing necessarily to do with content. Dickens, Sylvia Plath, Shakespeare, Anais Nin, Dylan Thomas.....these are my favourites in terms. of writers at the moment and nothing to do with bdsm.
Asd i also teach a fair few hours a week and work with students with learning differences and  that very mush absorbs my passion for analysing both the written and spolen word in as many contexts as there are academic subjects.
Now porn is a different thing. And then again it's got to be the kind of porn that is 'for real' rather than role playing. I guess i just want entertainment, time off and am also a pervy voyeur.
My real inspiration comes from the REAL things i do.
Lovely first post though. Thank you. i anjoyed responding.

This is a great topic.  I for one love reading  BDSM- type stories.  I have been a reading stories on Literotica.com for years.  There are many different type of BDSM stories there I tend to read the ones that involve D/s, nonconsent (D/s) kind, and mind control.  I have also many books that I have bought from the book store like 20 or more.  I really don't have a ultimate favorite but really enjoy bondage and one on one D/s relationships. This is a fun thread I have enjoyed reading all the posts and getting new ideas of things to read. Thanks--good luck to you passion777

Well, as it turns out, this is also my first post, so I hope I respond well.

I love reading certain BDSM stories, but they definitely have to be well-written with care taken for proper spelling and grammar (I know -- I'm a nerd).  I also find that I enjoy writing stories, ensuring that there are characters and plots.

Thanks for the topic!

You're not the only one. I not only primarily write erotica, but that's my preferred reading material too. Sometimes nothing gets me hotter than a good damned erotic story.

I personally liked Kushiel's Dart and its sequels, by Jacqueline Carey. It's one of my favorite books. I hear there are some really good S&M novels out there, but I have yet to check them out.
