Hot Springs, Arkansas.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Springs,_Arkansas

We are the only city that completely surrounds a National Park, and that park is the oldest federal reserve in the U.S.  Hot Springs National Park is the 2nd most visited National Park in the country.  It has a very interesting history.  At one time it was the largest illegal gambling center in the U.S., with gangsters like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Owney Madden vacationing here.  Luciano was arrested here, and Madden moved here and retired.  We are also the hometown of Bill Clinton, Alan Ladd, and Billy Bob Thorton.  We still have architecture around here from the turn of the century.  The downtown area is beautiful, half of it is part of the National Park.  We have a large artist community here with galleries owned by artists all over the world.  It was a great place to grow up.

It's the people.......and the Taylor Ham

Born, raised, and still live in the same 5 mile radius in NNJ.  Even went to the State college 45 minutes away.

The diversity is what is most appealing.  I can be skiing or on the beach in 90 minutes.   I can be in NYC or white water rafting in 45 minutes.  I've gone pumpkin picking and to a Yankee game in the same day.  The food, the mix of people, the "stuff" to do.....can't beat it.....

Chicago...Other than the politics, what's not to love?
Bears, Blackhawks, White Sox, the ethnic neighborhood's & festivals, the lakefront, Ricobenes, the Magnificent Mile, museums, galleries, Ricobenes, the pizza, the hot dogs, Ricobenes...Did I mention Ricobenes Breaded Steak Sammich with the world's greatest french fries?

Damn, I miss Chicago

I'm confused (so what else is new eh).
Would 'hometown' be where one grew up? Or would it be where one now lives?

I grew up in a rather interesting place, where the greats of the automobile industry lived. I think it could be called a bedroom community of Detroit but I've never really gotten a good definition of 'bedroom community' lol.

Visually it was absolutely beautiful and a lot of people drove through simply to look at the homes. In reality it sucked for me as a kid. I couldn't figure out the way I was supposed to act, the clothes to wear or the correct things to say. Nearly every kid I encountered was cruel under their designer clothing and I was not well able to handle that. The 'behind closed doors' certainly did not match the superficial exterior of the area.

Now I live  near a teensy town oddly still considered a suburb of Detroit even though I am about 90 miles north. It is charming but boring.

So what exactly is ones hometown?

sirsholly -> RE: What is special about your hometown? (8/18/2008 5:12:05 AM)

When we moved here we found the well to be dry. No water. One of the neighbors stopped to welcome us and we told him about the well and asked his advice on who to call.
About an hour later we heard a tractor headed toward us. It was the same neighbor, hauling 4 one hundred gal barrels of water.

Since that day it has just gotten better.

I love my hometown of Rockland, Maine, on the ocean, lighthouses, tons of art galleries and restaurants and did I mention the amazing rugged coastline and the ocean breeze I can smell this morning?  If I could take someone somewhere it would be a trip to the famous Olsen house, where Andrew Wyeth painted his famous painting "Christina's World" then a walk to one of our many lighthouses, then a stop off at Waterman's Beach Lobster to eat a bunch of lobsters outside on the rocks and watch the waves come in. Then I would definitely head downtown for a tour of all of the amazing galleries and the Wyeth homestead and some incredible dinner later at the seriously world renowned Primo restaurant.

But damn Mike, NYC is my *favorite* place in the States. I love it, and everytime I go for a visit, I love it more and more.

GREAT TOPIC!

Well alot of GREAT people once lived in Chicago.  I grew up there 25 years.  Over a weekend I would burn a tank of gas- going downtown. We had great times on the lake- both boating, and spontanious dance parties right on the lake shore!  [near Belmont rocks]   I had a wonderful childhood. Note that during that time period it was popular to blame to parent for every shortcoming ever.  I went to the bext parties - college in Chicago.  It was the best of times - and the worst.

It all caught up with me.   So I moved to Sunbury PA- the town where I was born.  I should have done it 2 years sooner.

When I first moved to Pennsylvania- anything I wanted to do,mom said "cant", which to a Chicagoan when someone says "you cant do that"  the reply is "watch me" followed by actually do it- or trying to.  So I started calling this "cant-sylvania".  Then I had to go thru debriefing.  Verbalness here is viewed as rude- city slickers are viewed with suspicion.  If one did not go to high school here- one will never ever break in the the inner circle.

But then I toned down my attitude.

From there things flowed nicely. I dont have to look over my shoulder every minute.  People do treat others better because you WILL bump into eachother later [even 10 years later] .also likely you know a cousin, and kin of the person.

Pennsylvania has hardwood trees- impressive.  It is a pretty state.

I found state governance is rather good in PA, tho I only lived in Il.

So a visitor here- my garden, the river is accross the street, the boat launch, the marina, the cazabo, the overlook, are some of my favorites.

Chief Skickellamy, was a famous indian chief. Was was here thru out- then when he took power 6 nations lived in peace. The French Indian war was here- one can walk to fort augusta

Anyhow my town could be any number of towns.   I am partial to PA.

The comment about Californians.  I hear you.  The pocanos and Willamsport has what we politely call "influx".   Even Bucknell kids nearby think thing work like they do in Jersey but they DONT.

Pennsylvania was once a powerhouse state.  With steel, coal, lumber, farms, factories. Today it is very grey in population.  They folks live to be old here.

I have come to endear "old school" where people treat people and property with respect and admiration.

Ironically PA has lost much of its  young adults to the sun belt.... they leave and stay gone.

From here Ild love to move to what is called the Pennsylvania wilds.  We have parks that have alot of beauty.  A mini grand canyon, the northern tier [north of i80] is high elevations and sparcely populated... I wish I could live there.  It snows alot there. The people are more laid back there as this valley is becoming a suburb with out a city and that is cheaponing the area.

How could I forget?

Another great thing about Boise is that we have a fantastic University campus right beside the Boise river that boasts the top college football team of the last decade.

I miss all of those things and especially the FOOD.  I miss seeing the skyline from a sailboat in Monroe harbor, gently floating tied to the can and enjoying the summer nights and sounds.

Does Crobar still have fetish nights and the piercings on stage?

If I ever brought someone to my hometown...

I would tell them "Run.  Turn around and run till you hit Ybor and don't fucking look back or it'll consume you."

Sounds like my neighborhood as I live in God's waiting room of Southwest Florida. Unless you like older, retirees who drive like turtles, coasting along the left-hand lane on a major highway with houses hit with foreclosure signs and bars that have people drinking the beer and chewing on chicken wings, then come on down!

I LOVE Chicago. Drive down a city street, its never boring. The sights, the sounds, the energy. There is no place I'd rather live.

depends on who's hosting the fetish night - i've attend a couple hosted by Mistress Xena (at Kinetic Playground and The Abbey) and Mistress Ammunition. a few other clubs like The Mansion or Excalibur (for the annual fetish weekend) combine fetish parties with goth/industrial music shows.

I use the phrase-ette 'home town' to mean 'the place where I grew up', and in my case that means Rochester, New York.

There are a few things that come to mind off the top of my head.

*Walking on the shore of Lake Ontario and suddenly discovering I was actaully walking on ice...that the mighty Great Lake had actually frozen.  Ditto with walking all the way across the Geneva River during the winter freeze.*

*The sensation of sensory overload of beauty when spending a day in Lilac Park when lilacs were at the peak of bloom.  There were even swans in a tiny lake.*

*Watching an old film having something to do with a balloon in the 'theater room' at the George Eastman House, once the residence of the man who founded the company now know as 'Kodak'.  The house itself was amazing, and the two things together -- the film and the house -- were very evocative.*
