Are you kidding?  Where are you shopping, Wal-Mart?  Shorts and skirts are different lengths, tops are very different cuts, dresses are different lengths and styles...  There definitely is such a thing as age-appropriate.

And for the love of god PLEASE remember that the rest of us out there have to look at you in whatever you wear... so before you step out of the house in your too-tight shirt and your super-short shorts use a mirror, please?  Seems that 70% of the world has stopped owning one... I can't tell you how many times I've been out and about and saw people wearing things so inappropriate for their figure or their age that I actually felt a twinge of pity for them.  This goes in reverse as well, by the way, when I see pretty young girls shuffling around in sweatpants and baggy T-shirts and I think "oh no, honey, why, WHY?!"  Age appropriate nowadays does not necessarily mean super frumpy and gross, but there certainly is a cutoff point for flimsy halter tops and butt-shorts.

Oh, and proper underwear.  I don't care how old you are, if you've got a cheap-ass bra that isn't holding the puppies where they need to be, go ahead and tack an extra ten years onto your age.  Seriously.

I'll admit it, I am a fashionista bitch.  I am horribly judgemental and will always side with the other fashionista bitches out there.  I'm going to steal/paraphrase a Trinny and Susannah quote here when I say that your best friends won't tell you what to wear... but I am NOT your best friend, and I will.

Usually horribly bluntly, but whatever, some people need that kick in the ass to stop dressing like a goddamn hobo.

Edit: Forgot to add in this entire thread my boots dilemma in the hopes that someone can help me out... usually I stick to my leather pointed-toe/stiletto heeled knee-high boots that I love so dearly, but a factor of calf muscle built up from dancing/ice skating/martial arts coupled with an illness that causes my legs to swell to twice their normal size makes wearing any of the zip-up boots impossible.  Other than going with ankle boots and slacks this fall, does anybody have a similar problem that they've figured out how to solve, or have any ideas as to what the Hell I can do?

Well. Just, ow.

Perhaps the next time you see a woman dressed like a g**damn hobo, you should go up to her and offer your fashion advice.
Perchance that hobo would be me...and i would lay into you and tell you i left a sick child in the hands of a neighbor so i could pick up a script for him. Perhaps it might be my best friend who is a single mom raising two girls on her own and sometimes doesn't have the money to feed her family...and certainly can't afford to dress like a fashion plate.

Clothes do not make the man...or the woman.

ETA...and btw...there are some who DO shop at Walmart because it is all they can afford.

Don't worry, from the picture you've got as your main one, you're doing just fine.    Top is cute and not frumpy and the hoop earings are actually the perfect size so as not to cross over into the realm of pirate hooker/ghetto fabulous.  Your makeup accentuates your features, especially around your eyes, and the hairstyle you've got going is pretty cute from what I'm seeing of it.

SUBTEE!  You're one of the good ones!

(Some people really do just intuitively have good fashion sense.)

Payless shoes to go w/the Walmart age appropriate butt shorts?

**Eta, personally, I love both stores. I get MORE compliments on the clothes/shoes I buy there then when I shell out some extra $$ for designer wear. Don't knock the products from the stores, just the way they look on you**

I prefer Target, but Wal-Mart has saved my ass on shoes and some professional clothing from their Georges line, which I admit isn't half bad.

Wasn't trying to knock it as a store, though, which people seem to have gotten the wrong idea about... I said what I did because they don't tend to have much of a distinction between their Juniors and Misses section with the way they're lumped together, so I could see that layout causing some confusion.  The ones around here don't really have much of a selection beyond very casual wear, either, bleh.

I like Forever 21 as an alternative for some things, as their prices are still reasonable compared to Target/Wal-Mart.  And believe it or not, you luck out at Goodwill or the Salvation Army sometimes when you get people who wear things once and then donate them.  Or if you have a sewing machine you can alter some unfavorably cut items to look like a million bucks for only a handful of change.

Most people underestimate the importance of tailoring certain things to fit properly which most seamstresses charge a pittance for or can be done on their own if they've got the know-how.

It wasn't a save.

To be honest I don't care if somebody gets upset over what I have to say.  I'm not a sycophant and I'm not going to lie and sugarcoat shit just to make people feel better.

Just saying.

And if you go back and read my first post, I don't believe I said anything about wearing designer clothes and shoes, myself.  Since I know you're probably all snickering behind your back at the "rich bitch," I'm a poor college student with probably less money than either of you who just happens to know how to shop for things that look good and fall under the current fashion rules without having to break my wallet.  Which is why I'm so obsessive on keeping up with style -- a lot of "affordable" stores are minefields of shit mixed in with real winners.

Ask me about scoring two very gorgeous Coldwater Creek dresses retailing for around $200 each... for less than $30 combined.

It is obvious that you have more experience as a "fashionista bitch" then you do at back- peddling.

If your boots are Leather - you can have them stretched.  And, if you find a pair of boots that are too large in the calf area - you can have them taken in. But, you may need to find a specialist to do it - it has always been a custom shoe maker that made any alterations to my boots.  Another option is to shop Lane Bryant, Jessica London, Silhouettes - to name a few; which are stores for plus sized women - they each carry cute boots for girls with thicker legs.

I'm really not.  I accept the fact that when I type things or even speak, they often come out in such ways that people misunderstand what I mean.

I'm sorry you're so blinded by anger right now over this whole thing that you're refusing to really read and comprehend what I'm trying to explain.  Or maybe it's my fault for still not explaining it well enough, is there still some misunderstanding that I can clear up?

After all, Holly, believe it or not I am not trying to personally attack you, and I do enjoy your posts, so I'd like to make peace with you if possible.

Edited to add:  This is going to sound like an odd question, but... would somebody be so kind as to explain to me why people got offended to the point that they did?  I'm um... not really good with social cues and things like that... which is why I'm sitting here absolutely stumped.  They recently diagnosed me with Asperger's and as part of my own attempt to "fix" whatever I can, I usually have to ask questions like this when I fuck up to try to understand.  :/

Humility is overrated unless you're a hot shirtless chunk of imported man-meat.

Definitely truce, and I'm making notes so I don't screw up so badly again with what I say, haha.

Why not if you have the ass for them? :)

I am actually very blessed in that I get another 20% off clearance items, because I am an employee at sears. And the clearance rack at Target are my two favorites to get new clothes. I am wearing a sexxy $8 black dress that I got there, and everyone keeps complamenting me about it.

I love fashion, but need to be honest that I hate shopping. So when I find something great at a great price. I feel like i hit the lottery.

And as for fashion at a certain age, I wear something classy with curves to work, and red and black are my favorite colors to wear. I actually wear red as a power color. :)

See, one of my issues is that my hubby doesn't see a fifty year old woman when he looks at me. There are some things that I just refuse to wear because I'm not a teenager, but in the same light I don't feel fifty either. I honestly believe that if you have a minimal amount of common sense you can dress appropriately for an occasion. I love the winter, I love the snow but this year I'm not really looking forward to it. Last winter was such hell for me and not being able to wear shoes doesn't help much. Especially when you consider I am a loyal follower of Emelda. But I will wear my boots, even if it's only for a little bit at a time.

Ladies, if i may offer my humble advice. The boot marked L goes on the left foot.

<Smiles very sweetly >

Last time i spotted a woman wearing jeans tucked into boots, i walked into a lampost. Lets keep that just between ourselves though.

I was not born with the girly gene.  I do not keep up with "fashion" because it's out of date in six months to a year.  My budget will not support a new wardrobe, or even accessories, that often.  My problem is finding clothes/shoes in styles that are classic enough to wear year after year.

Suggestions, Ms. Fashion Guru?  I could use the help.
