And what is your problem with a certain segment of society being able to get jobs that offer some improvement over manual labor?

.....*blinks*.......

...are you on drugs? Come on, please explain how you got that impression from what i've typed in this thread.

Alumbrado -> RE: Republican Branding (8/31/2008 2:18:56 PM)

You are bashing trade schools for not offering foreign languages  ("...hard to conceive an honourable reason for such a billboard" )... the explanation about such ads coming from trade schools aimed at the economically disadvantaged was given,  in depth, and your comeback reeks of the same sort of disdain for less fortunate others you've earned a reputation for...
as in your long and loud defense of  'pharmacists have a right to deny medicine to people who aren't using it for contraception'.

Sorry bip, you are still batting zero on facts... I haven't owned a TV for longer than you've been wearing that combover...  kicked the glass teat addiction cold turkey.

So you and #6 can have all the credit for hearing things without a receiver for yourselves.

...no i'm not. i'm concerned about a singular trade school propogating this attitude. Your attempt to generalise out from that position is blatantly contentious. You're looking to create arguments where none need exist.

.....no, what was explained was why these schools exist. And i have made absolutely no comment on that.

......really? i have such a reputation do i? Well, if i have then that is a bad thing. However if, as i suspect, said reputation is merely an artefact of your own contentious attitude.....well, then it's your problem not mine.

quote:

as in your long and loud defense of  'pharmacists have a right to deny medicine to people who aren't using it for contraception'.

......in that thread i made a factual mistake. Which i apologised for at the time and have pointed that out to you the last time you tried to beat me up over it. What i don't aplogise for is the idea that US citizens are free to follow their own religious beliefs. Even the ones i don't like.

What, in this thread, i have consistently questioned, and you haven't even begun to address, is the inherent bigotry of this billboard. Me asking questions about that has nothing at all to do with a position denying education to those less well off, which is what you accuse me of. Your bullying, aggressive and blatantly distorted arguing technique is reminiscent of high school debate tactics, something that you have repeatedly decried in others.

Not only are you contentious, you're a hypocrite.

What was explained was why these schools advertise, and to whom...

And your reply indicated that either:

You refused to read or admit to what was written (as you did over and over again with your denial and ad hom attacks in the pharmacist thread, in spite of having the words 'not for contraception' repeatedly reposted in bolded red font... calling that a 'factual mistake' doesn't make it so)...

Or that your original comment about it being dishonourable to advertise an opportunity for a trade job to the target audience, stood.

.

........once again, are you on drugs?

i have never stated that it was dishonourable to advertise, i took issue with the specific content of one advertisment. You haven't read, or even tried to understand what i've written and have employed those high school debate tactics that you so regulary criticise in others.
By your own actions you prove, over and over, to be a contentious hypocrite.

More than one person pointed out to you that the ad was the type used by trade schools.

The fact is, that people at whom such schools and such ads are aimed, the people who may never reach your benchmark of a job in Quebec or North Africa, aren't  'US isolationists', they are people who may not always have the luxury of choices you obviously take for granted.

These may be people who need to feed their families the best way they can, and advertising French as a part of the curriculum adds months to the possibility of completing it... months of finding ways to take care of children and pay the bills while in class, months of walking, riding busses, working odd shifts, doing without sleep, without money, just plain doing without.

Your stated disdain for the reasons for advertising a streamlined curriculum both before ( i agree, it's hard to conceive an honourable reason for such a billboard, but too easy to imagine one that relies on a sense of US isolationism/exclusionism) and after (Surely the idea that such a message is being sent out is worrying in the extreme. ) knowing that it was about helping such people get a possible step up, paints a very clear picture...
You are what they call a 'gatekeeper' in academia.

Even though the trade school and night school industry itself is after quick money by offering the often illusory hope of a better life, I ( unlike yourself and Number 6) find nothing derogatory about the people who hold such hopes, and nothing wrong with streamlining programs for their benefit.

Call that 'hypocrisy' on my part all you like.

The 'debating tactic' that I regularly use, that is pissing you and others off, is that of not accepting things just because you claim they are so... [;)]

Oh no AL,speaking for myself there is a whole lot more going on than just your tactic's,why there is your abrasive personality, there is your dismissal of anyone's opinion other than your own...and finally there is your branding of people with labels one should not throw around so readily....there are probably a couple of other things but that will do for now!!!!

This is not about politics but isolationism. While driving yesterday I saw a billboard for a local college:

'Friends don't let friends take French'
Business courses 100%   Fluff courses 0%

It shocked me, my first thought was 'what about international business? isn't learning another language important and the concept of it being fluff a bit dangerous?'

........i have to say that i find it hard to believe that such a billboard exists, but as i've never seen you post anything remotely resembling a lie i have to accept it.

Come on you right wingers, how about a comment on this. Surely the idea that such a message is being sent out is worrying in the extreme. After all, French isn't just spoken in France. Quebec and north africa come to mind. Both areas where the US will want to do business.

It is from Walsh College, on I75 north a bit south of M24. I was stuck in traffic and had plenty of time to read it. I found it really disturbing, not at all amusing. If I go that way next week I will try and get a pic for you.

It really is there in bright yellow.

..no it isn't. And you telling us it is wont work either. What you do, is distort what others write, attack the straw man argument you have just invented and then have a go at people when they don't play the game that you have decided they ought to play.
You're absolutely not alone in doing this and have, in the past, rightly held those people up as bad arguers. You have also in the past made me realise when i have made an error. i may not enjoy the experience but i thank you for it.
However, by ducking and diving around in this thread you are destroying whatever credibility you have earned.
The issue i have repeatedly concentrated on is the inherent bigotry in the sign Camille saw. You have not, at any point, seriously addressed that issue.....and have, instead, either pretended it isn't there or attacked other posters on points they haven't tried to make.
This is the sort of thing you are capable of catching and confronting in others........but you appear to be blind to it when it's your behaviour at issue.

NumberSix -> RE: Republican Branding (8/31/2008 4:28:32 PM)

I don't know about how classy many peoples debating tactics are including mine...

But let's talk about the elephant in the room.

If Republicans are branding people, they have taken this Texas shit way too far.

A small and aestheically pleasing tattoo,  A kef on the inner thigh OK, or the sole of the foot if she is a real bitch, mebbe.......but no!!!!

It needs to stop, and stop now!!!!

Business trade school?

You know. . . classes one night a week or on a weekend, finish in 10 months commercials?

They likely do not even offer French.  Or Geology.

.....all very well, but if they don't offer French why even mention it?

My thought was that it was a play on the commercial 'Friends don't let friends drive drunk'.

There You go again AL,is that your way of calling me a racist in public instead of  the method you used last time, private CM mail...and than refused to read the reply...like I said class act all the way
BTW AL coming from you ,the way you throw that label around...I am actually proud you think this of me...thank you...

Alumbrado -> RE: Republican Branding (8/31/2008 4:36:52 PM)

Still waiting for you to provide that earlier quote you claimed I made in another thread, specifically called someone else a racist... are you recycling your tired old tactic of making stuff up, and running away when asked about it, only to keep bringing it up?

Or just going for another one of your deliberate thread hijacks?
