McCain is now trumpeting CHANGE as a campaign slogan. Why, in your opinion, does the Republican party need to change its leadership style? What changes do you foresee?

If you don't understand why we need a change from Bush, then I would suggest you do a search on "bush" and read up on it.

If you still don't understand, then I don't know what I can say.

Specificly sited in the speech earmarks in Washington will get a big VETO. Bush didn't veto a single spending bill during the first 6 or 7 years.
So the change will be a change in republican leadership back towards an actually fiscal conservative policy. Judgeing from his past McCain is more than promise on this issue.
Change back to the idea of smaller government after Bush grew the size of the government by about 90% (in terms of employees)

A change from the Drunken Sailor spending habits getting signed off on by a supposedly conservative president.

I'll include this in the speach thread as well but did you notice McCain took his own party to task for exactly that spending?

Ah! I noticed the 'change' thing too: is it common practice to blatantly steal campaign slogans from the other side, especially after deriding them for months?

Ah, but he's offering the "right" kind of change (pun intended).

My fear is that it is pandering to the lowest common denominator--undecided voters--who (I also fear), will be the "deciders."

I can't get my mind around how, with even just a rudimentary amount of understanding or attention paid to the campaigns, so many folks don't feel compelled toward one or the other tickets. It's not as if they are similar in their policies, personalities, histories or much of anything else.

How to pander to undecideds? Blur the lines (or lie) about what you have stood for and about what you will give focus and attention to if elected. Make a tagged statement (in this case a word: "change"), your own branding and then focus on biography in place of anything of substance (at least in terms of...change).

Is it a hijack to ask if anyone can help me to feel better that undecideds will be the deciders?

Maybe he means he'll only push 89% of Bushes policies this time around, instead of voting with him the full 90% of the time.

Maybe he means we'll only stay in Iraq 75 years instead of 100.

Maybe he means he'll cut some of the "frills" at gitmo.

Maybe he means he'll find OTHER vet benefits to cut.

Maybe he means that he'll be honest about things, and start calling torture what it is, and not "enhanced interrogation techniques." Maybe he'll call "extraordinary rendition" what it is: kidnapping.

Hmmmm. According to one of our more prolific posters, though, Bush has a good economic record and deserves credit for the success of the surge.

Change to me for the Republican Party would be to sweep away the old guard that has been corrupeted
by power and are no different today than the democrat party hacks that are giving the "do nothing" Congress
of that stellar leader Pelosi, the lowest ratings in history.  Oh yea...they did raise the minimum wage and I had
to fire ten teenagers not worth over $7.00/hr.

The entry on the scene of Sarah Palin is the breath of fresh air we all need.  Obama may be the same for the
democrats but his background leaves much to be desired.  At least he has passion and, hopefully, will not
wind up in the same mess as other Chicago politicians corrupted by the machine.

The Gov. of New Orleans is another younger guy that brings energy to the Republican party.  Every party goes
through ups and downs and people thought the party was dead after the Goldwater defeat.  However, it healed,
regenerated, and came back to life strong than ever, eventually breaing the fifty year stranglehold on Congress held
by democrats.

Change is coming for the Republicans....Same ol Same ol is here for the democrats.  The GOP can win the general
in November with this ticket, and even where I live in NJ, the Senate seat could turn into a hot race.

You know, we've been asking Hussein that same question for 18 months now, and still haven't got an answer.

At least McCain has a record of working with the opposition party to pass legislation, that right there is change from the status quo.

Ok, so I see that and a return to fiscal conservatism. That's two items. Anything else?

-------

Biden had this to say about Palin's speech:

MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: How do you think your Republican counterpart did here last night?

SEN. BIDEN: Well, my plane was landing. I only caught the last two-thirds of the speech, but I was impressed. I think it was a skillfully delivered political speech with confidence and directness and so I think she did what she was supposed to do. I was impressed.

I was also impressed by what I didn't hear in the speech. I didn't hear a word--didn't hear the phrase middle class mentioned, I didn't hear a word about health care. I didn't hear a single word about what we're going to do about the housing crisis, college education, all the things that the middle class is being burdened by now. I didn't hear the words Afghanistan or Pakistan where al-Qaeda lives and bin Laden resides, so I also, you know, there was a deafening silence about the hole that the Republicans have dug us into and any specific answers to how the McCain-Palin ticket is going to get us out of that hole.

That depends, if it works then it is ok. If it doesn't work, then it was a dumb idea.

I find it hard to take you seriously, when you don't know the names of the candidates.

I guess we can only assume not much change is actually wanted or felt needed by the Republicans.

No, it's just a realistic view on what's possible in a 4 year term from a President.  The Democrats seem to believe in a fairy tale Presidency where Obama will fix global warming, poverty, and education in one term.  On day one, he will pull all troops out of Iraq without causing a bloody civil war.  He will get those Iranians to stop plans for making nukes, and he will get the Russians to stop bullying their neighbors.  He will completely get us off fossil fuels.  We will all have solar powered homes and electric cars that run forever.  Everyone will have free health care, and he's going to make all those evil rich people pay for it.  He's Obama, and YES HE CAN.  He's a wizard; he can do anything.

SMALLER GOVERNMENT!
most republicans want change, they really do!!
that would begin with wasteful spending!  it has to stop, now!
keep taxes low to stimulate the economy...establish a flat tax
revamp the social security program... privatizing for the younger generation...encourage with incentives, employers that have retirement plans for their employees
rebuild our standing in the world.  work toward peace!  stand up to terrorist & bullies!
give our schools back to the states, parents & students!  school vouchers!

that is what i view as change!

oh oh ho!

the VP's speech at the conventions is traditionally not a policy/state of the union address!!!  the VP's speech at the convention is the attack dog on the other Presidential candidate speech!!!  Palin did her job!  Biden did not!!!
