ORIGINAL: GreedyTop I almost prefered earthquakes for that reason, Heretic... here, the media gets all frenzied.."DEATH!!!!!! DOOM!!!!! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!" my first hurricane season, all that media crap had me so wound up that when Charley by-passed Tampa, I crashed HARD... the stress levels were enormous, I slept for 2.5 days.. On the one hand it's good to have forewarning, but the huge amount of uncertainty surrounding hurricanes can actually make it a big pain in the ass. I spent 14 hours in the car (no air conditioning, probably 95 degrees) to drive 200 miles evacuating for Hurricane Floyd in 1999, spent one night in a shelter, spent a lot of money we didn't have on gas and a hotel room, etc. etc. etc. They were predicting a dead-on hit as a strong Cat 3, massive destruction. We ended up getting 60 MPH winds and a bit of rain because it hung a last-minute turn. In 2004 I think it was, they were predicting that Hurricane Gaston was going to stay out to sea, so I took the bike trip I'd been planning on. Overnight it hung a left and headed directly for our house, which was completely unprepared, and my wife had to spend the day huddled in the dark hoping that nothing was going to come flying through the windows. We've been watching the tracks on Hanna waver from central Florida to central North Carolina for a week, Thursday night they'd decided on Wilmington NC, then Friday morning, they moved landfall 150 miles south. We got a little wind and rain. I spent about 20 hours this week getting the house and yard ready, and now I have to decide if I spend the day un-doing everything (deck furniture is stacked up in the spare bedroom, garage completely impassible), or just leave it until we get through September. Blah. But, if I were in the Keys, I'd probably be packing my shit right now...
