I know it sounds biased, but Portland, Oregon is my favorite large city. I guess what I like about Portland over so many other cities, is that eventhough it's densely populated, it still maintains a small town quaintness/charm that other cities really lack. I also like the fact that it's very clean in comparison to cities such as San Francisco. And the street-people and pan-handlers in Portland are so mild, that its my bet the folks in LA and San Francisco would put them up at the Four Seasons if they could trade them in for what they already have. Have any of you ever been to the Greyhound station in downtown LA? HAR!! I will be in Vancouver, Canada over the Christmas and New Years holiday, and have a very good feeling that it will become a very special place for me. - The Ranger

My special City is not really a city, but a place. Midway Island is located approximately 1200 miles NW of Honolulu, Hawaii. Actually, it is 2 islands with a total area of about 2 1/2 square miles. I moved there in the 1970s after having lived my whole life in a large city. We lived on the larger of the 2 islands. The longest part of the island contained the runway. Being in such relative isolation, life was different there. Cars were not permitted, so we all did the healthy thing and road bicycles and walked. It was the very first place i had ever been where i could walk alone late at night and have no fear. Where else could you send a 7 year old and a 3 year old child out on Saturday morning by themselves to attend free cartoons at the one and only movie theater? The worst crime there was bicycle theft. It is where i learned that a small community takes care of those in the community who need help. We all took turns hosting the holidays and made sure that the single men and women were invited to share the holiday meal. The island itself was lovely. There were white sand beaches. The ocean was a gorgeous blue and its waters were crytal clear. The water near the island was smooth and inviting, due to being surrounded by a coral reef. Being a bird sancturary, we watched the life cycle of the Layson Albatross, commonly called the gooney bird for its antics when attempting to take flight or land. The sky was clear and unpolluted, and it was there i saw my very first falling star. One could see bright fish in hues of blues and yellows or a lovely shimp type creature with red and white stripes. It was a place full of wonder for a city girl. For many years after leaving Midway, i still considered it home. Some day i hope to be able to return for a visit.

New Orleans, when I was 18, My mother decided we would never come out from the shadow of My father's popularity if we did not make a move ( he died unexpectedly a few years before)--so she chose New Orleans or St Thomas, the rest as they say is history, New Orleans is indeed what made Me the Woman, the person I am today---My mother grew as a beautiful person an individual in her own right, never losing the memory of My dad---On August 24, she died unexpectedly 40 years and a week after My dad and a wee before her beloved New Orleans was destroyed---New Orleans is like no other city in the US, a unique blending of European, Southern and Sante Domingue cultures--it is indeed My home, Woman, Domme and Wiccan Priestess---smiles

For me there are two. Chicago -- too many reasons to list. Just the best big city, ever, IMO. Was drawn to it because of the Orchestra, but just love everything about it. Jerusalem -- wow. The history, the architecture, the archaeology, the mix of cultures and religions, the markets, the crazy politics. I took an 8-month sabbatical in 1999 and backpacked across the Middle East and India. I spent over a month just in Jerusalem. My favorite place, by far.

Believe it or not Baltimore is my favorite city. This is hard to believe because Paris is my second favorite city. Baltimore simply feels like "home" to me in a way that no other city does. The huge variety of cultures, the metropolitan feel mixed with the old harbor mentality, the food, the clubs. It's simply "my space." Paris on the other hand is simply lovely, old, grandiose, amazing food and fashion galore. I love many cities, Denver, DC, Boston, Dublin, LA, St. Paul, etc. But Baltimore and Paris hold deeply special reverence in my heart.

NYC...everything from the museums, the food, the energy, the noise and of course the people. It just doesn't get any better than that.

This it too hard! We had to add some timing/event criteria... San Fransisco during Folsom. NYC in October with the Yankees in the World Series. New Orleans in spring before the mosquitoes reach sparrow size and the humidity is still below 80%. Venice during the film festival. Kingston NY when the leaves are changing. Just a few off the top of our heads. But for day-to-day, "doesn't suck" we're very happy in Palos Verdes!

Detroit -- very happy memories. Kalamazoo -- quite lovely, very livable. Jacksonville/St Augustine -- the best Florida has to offer IMO. candystripper

All of my life, Montréal has always been my favourite city. I love travelling and discovering but I'm always happy to come home. The thing is, Montréal can't give me all that I need and I realise that one day I will most likely move away. It will always be home to me though. In Canada, the only other place I could see myself living is Vancouver and perhaps other parts of British Columbia (relatively close to urban centres). And I have a feeling Vancouver will become more special very soon… - LA

NYC, is the greatest city in the world.. From the Met to the Mets: If you can make it there you’ll make it anywhere… Other places that sit at the round table in my mind: Savannah GA, southern charm and civil war history. Boston for Fenway Park, North End, BackBay, close proximity to the Cape Baltimore for Crap Cakes, and Camden Yards London where you can smell the History. Seoul for chaotic beauty. Bar Harbor Maine for the soul. San Francisco holds sentimental memories. Visiting Candlestick Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, A Beautiful Woman…before going over seas. Sartoris

My favorite city is right where I'm at: Lafayette, Indiana. Most people groan when I tell them that, and most of the teenagers that live here want out. But for me, I've lived here my entire life, I was born here, raised here, my brothers and sister were born here, my niece was born here, I met my husband and was married here, and everyone in my family lives here. I love this place. It's not a small city. There is plenty to do. But it is small enough that the crime rate is fairly low. It's a great place to raise a family. I'm a country girl at heart. I need my wide open spaces. I'd go insane in a big city. I've traveled extensively, and I can honestly tell you there's no place like home. Then again, if I have to pick a different city I'd either pick Asheville, North Carolina, Washington D.C., or Chicago. I really do love Chicago. I just couldn't live there. (Luckily I live a little under two hours from it, so it's an easy drive.)
