Ah, that lovely word "feck". I heard that used when I was in Ireland. After My divorce, the unmentionables were taken to Ireland by their father. I heard about how Uncle So-and-So, got into serious trouble with Aunt What's-her-name, for using such a bad word (quite often!) in front of the youngest (she was 9, think). She just asked her Aunt what it meant? I laughed and laughed when I heard about it.

Funny story:

1st baby, i wanted to do everything right...especially not curse in front of her. One day, we were sitting in traffic and she said "Look, Mommy, there's an asshole!" (pointing at another driver). Evidentially she had got the idea that the name for other drivers was assholes, LMAO.

Believe me, it could have been much worse.

I save my profanity for when I want to make an impact. That way, when I deign to use a cuss word, it speaks volumes.

Hey, it's not like it was easy for me to get this way. I was raised in Chicago. It was a concious choice. I'm always very deliberate in my speech choice. Force of habit, but it intrigues the right people.

slavejali -> RE: profanity in postings (11/30/2005 2:07:53 PM)

i like freedom of expression, i dont get offended by how anyone expresses themselves in type or verbalisations. i'd much rather someone be them self, even if they are cussing someone out or displaying poor character, or whatever, it gives a real picture of the poster at the time of their post.

brightspot -> RE: profanity in postings (11/30/2005 2:49:40 PM)

I don't mind some cussing here and there, what I find offensive and rude is when someone posts several posts on someone else's thread sometimes one after the other. Or when they feel like they have to converse with everyone who posts, when they didn't even begin the thread. Especially when they basically have nothing of value to say[8|].

Hope they didn't say fanny too much...it has a a slightly different meaning here. lol

I think that's called verbal diarrohea, a different phenomenon from profanity, but similarly revolting.

Discussion is one thing, reading through a thread and leaving 10 post strings responding to every 3rd post from the previous 4 pages is tiresome to read and does not promote discourse.

I learned about 'fanny' when I was in Wales earlier this year. Everytime I referred to my fanny pack, my girl would blanche a bit. Finally she told me they call those things "bum bags", and that fanny was slang for pussy. When she told me that, I suddenly understood why the lady in the security line at the London Gatwick airport looked shocked when I asked her to hand me my fanny pack.

As for using bad language here: I am not particularly obscene, nor am I overly pristine in my word choices. I try to write like I speak, and I find that an occasional obscenity can help provide needed emphasis. I try not to use such words gratuitously but sometimes I fuck up.[8|]

Mercnbeth -> RE: profanity in postings (11/30/2005 4:18:34 PM)

When a curse word leaves my mouth or is printed by me, it's a mistake. It means I've "lost it" and I HATE "loosing it"! I think I was at least 25 before I ever heard my father (factory worker) curse. Credit a bad NY Yankee loss for that. I've yet to hear my mom, at least not in English, and the Italian ones I know.

The impact never occurred to me, nor did I think it "positive" until one night when my daughter, beth, (who has no trouble cursing, and does so frequently to the new puppies) and I were talking and telling stories over dinner. My daughter issued forth with a pretty tame profanity, and I addressed it. beth noted to her that she rarely heard me curse. My daughter told beth; "My dad doesn't curse!". She gave all the "credit" for her raw language skills to my ex-wife. I'm happy to know my ex's forever on that side of the upbringing equation.

I think language is important. I don't attribute "emphasis" to cursing but rather a bit of laziness that you didn't take time to think of a wittier or more sarcastic was to say it without cursing. Being from NYC, wit and sarcasm was a business survival skill, and you lost "points" interjecting cursing in a Board Room argument. Consider that after your appearance, your speech and manner of communicating is the next illustration of you.

At this stage of my life, it's so ingrained in me I know I'm not "good" at cursing so I don't try. Ultimately, words can't hurt anyone. So, I'm neutral on the subject.

I just wanted to post to topic so I could give a "second" to my friend from NJ, Aileen's post.[8D]

I have been known to cuss someone out royally, never even having said the word damn. And it's fun to sit there and see the look on their face, trying to figure out what had jsut happened.

I have this one happen relatively often. My beloved mate says that I can flay the skin off an idiot with words without cussing or raising my voice above a gentle hum... and have them thank me before they slip into shock.

I don't know about that, but I -do- know that I tend to keep and hold people's attention better when I actually -talk- to them about what is peeving me, rather than yell at them or cuss at them. (Ok... to be fair, the teenaged unmentionables call these occasions "lectures" -- and every one of them dreads one of my lectures). Not that I never use the coarser language -- I can make a sailor blush under the right circumstances -- but it never struck me as effective, so I never cultivated using cuss words or "blasphemous" language other than as an occasional recreational outlet.

I love that and can so relate. You would laugh if you ever heard me cuss face to face, it just doesn't sound right when the words leave my mouth. There are times when my girlfriends and I will use inapropriate language towards one another, but, its totally done in fun and never where outsiders would be privy to it.

But dammit, it took me years to perfect my crudeness on the net, so everone can air out their family jewels and just fork off for all I care. Because, dammit, I get to let the bioch out with a big childlike grin ever so often when on the net. No, I wouldn't feel comfortable using fowl language off adult type forums. For me its just one more for of release.
