Well finally, most US voters are in agreement that the economy is the #1 priority for the country. Now whether or not we can come to an agreement on how to do the quick fix now and major repairs later remains to be seen. I am giving my best impression of a Gallic shrug on that one [sm=dunno.gif] and an official, "Hell if I know!?" "Majority of Americans say U.S. on wrong track: poll" Tuesday, September 23, 2008 12:33 pm "WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans are divided along racial lines but agree that the United States is on the wrong track and the economy is the top priority, according to an opinion poll conducted by USA Today, ABC News and Columbia University released on Tuesday. Eighty percent of blacks and Hispanics and 76 percent of whites surveyed said the economy should be the next president's highest priority. Seventy-eight percent of all respondents said the country was on the wrong track. Yeah and if terrorists hit us tomorrow the next day terrorism will be issue #1. These polls about issues being ranked have more to do with news cycles than anything else.

I do not think that the economic crisis is going away anytime soon. The problems of everyday living and basic survival are a top priority this election cycle.

I am not all that worried about the economy. Of course, I don't stand to lose much. I don't have any debts; everything I own is mine. I'm not married, and I don't have any kids. I don't own a home, so I can pick up and go whenever I feel like it or need to. I'm educated. I have a varied work background, which includes skills I can fall back on if work is shy. I can pinch pennies like no one else, and live on next to nothing (I've done it before.) I'll be fine. For those of y'all that seem scared to death; I fell sorry for you.

Is this true and even at the expense of the next two or three generations ? It is time there is a re-adjustment and the boomers pay their bills before we do anything more rash than has been done TO US over the last eight years.

You are in a better position than most, not having a mortgage, spouse or youngsters. How is the local economy in your part of the country?

I live in a small city, and the economy is based on tourism. So it's not great, but it's not horrible either. I got laid off from a good job in April. I've made do with my savings and with temping. I have been planning on moving somewhere else, but this is my hometown. I feel safe and comfortable here at the moment. Housing is really cheap here. You can rent a nice 1 bedroom apartment here for less than $400 a month. It's a small town, so I don't use that much gasoline. The economy being the way it is right now, I am not as eager to leave at the moment. I'm not thrilled with what I'm doing at the moment, but I'm comfortable.

You are adapting to the situation well. The local economy here has taken a beating. I know several business that have closed or are considering closing and quite a few people who have been laid off. Housing is expensive but the market is in a slump too. Even the local tourist industry was down over the summer. The saving grace is that the university is back in session and that means lots of spending at the local restaurants, bars and stores. The local PD made a record number of citatations and arrests this past weekend so the new crop of freshmen may keep the jail full on the weekends.

The only escape out of this crisis will be by way of ''New Deal'' type intervention /economics. And you can better bet your bum that a few of the usual ideologues here will respond in later threads declaring that '' The Market!!!!'' will eventually right itself on its own, or some other similar type parroted nonsense. A crisis this dire will never right itself on its own....There needs to be intervention----but not of the '' throw-good-money-after-bad-money '' ilk. [;)] - R

One may talk of skewed polls on issues, or about the local economy but, face the facts, what people know is what effects them on a personal basis. It costs them almost twice as much to drive their cars, they have credit card debt with an almost endless future and they see no end to a bad economy in sight. We must depend on the decision making of an administration that may be the least admired, least trusted and worst performing in most of our lives and even those who are educated aren't sure of the future. As a businessman I see a lack of traffic in my stores, buyers passing on making purchases, dropping average ticket amounts and less credit approvals for larger purchases. Those who think this will pass overnight are overly optimistic. If things turn even worse, as it sits there isn't money to loan to businesses to help them weather the storm. It isn't 1929 but, it is scary and if it isn't the economy as priority #1 to you then you are either insulated in a fashion like slaveboy or you live in a world the rest of us don't inhabit.

One of the few things Bill Clinton said that I totally agreed with.."it's the economy, stupid!". It's ALWAYS the economy. That's why people get up in the morning and shove off to work...or get up in the afternoon to punch in on the 4PM -Midnight shift. Putting food on the table is the first priority for everyone, paying the rent and mortgage, paying the bills....and than we can make time to think about Iraq, Iran, the impact on our society from Illegal Immigration, Roe v Wade, or going to the dentist. That's why the polls for the general election don't really mean much now. As we get into October, people who lead busy lives trying to do really important things for their family, might tune in and focus mentally on the two men who are applying for the job and determine who has the ability to protect their families, has the maturity to react responsibily and intelligently under pressure, and has the proven ability to make tough, principled, decisions, and take the resultant heat, despite the polls and media grilling. That's the choice we all have to make with the same power and value, whether you are Warren Buffet or a poor person down on his luck.

I'd feel a whole lot better about this, if the response to this crisis didn't mirror how they pushed through PATRIOT and PATRIOT II. The crisis has come, people are being worked up into a panic, and Bush and his cronies offer a two page long "solution" that includes getting the money, and specifically excluding themselves from any kind of oversight and review.... Why does this make me think this whole thing was manufactured, just so Bush & buddies could walk away with a few billion in the last days of his shitty presidency? It took these schmoes ten years to increase the minimum wage by a measley $1.40 an hour... and now they are wanting to restructure our economy based on the guidelines submitted on a post-it-note. We are reaping the whirlwind of the "global economy." Working people should be making $20-$40 an hour by now. They're not just so that companies can make obscene profits but now, the working people aren't making enough to buy those companies' products. Ever notice that "efficiency experts" never want to do the things that they want "others" to do?

If worse came to worse, I can always go borrow my dad's travel trailer and live in it. When I was thinking about leaving after my lay off in April, he offered it to me. Hell, I could pull into a park and pay less than $200 a month in lot rent and utilities. Ten years ago, I was living in a studio apartment with a Murphy bed. I worked as a night watchman for a juvenile respite center, and I made a little over minimum wage. I did just fine; I even managed to save a little money. The economy doesn't scare me a bit. I do worry for some of my friends and family. I have a friend that moved to Austin a month ago. She has three kids, bad credit, and she is waiting tables. I worry about her all the time. I have another friend that is married with two kids, has bad credit, a mortgage, and is making shit money as a 911 dispatcher. It sucks for them. But it's not going to affect me much at all. It's mostly just changing my long-term plans a little.
