Homemade soups, stews, chicken noodle casseroles. Warm homemade biscuits.

Oversized sweatshirts, plaid flannel PJ bottoms, fancy, pretty scarfs around my neck.

Staying home on Sat. night playing cards or board games with friends near the fire.

Not going to work when there is a Nor' Easter, and having zero guilt

Working on knitting projects or reading during a snowstorm or when it is sub zero temps.

Tailgating and going to the Patriots games in the snow.

My annual get away to Vegas in February.

Being mesmerized at bare tree branches frozen and glistening in the sun from ice.

And of course..... my black velvet dress !

northern winters?

being born n bred in the midwest.......being used to...5 seasons...spring/summer indian summer fall winter..
i like SOME of the winter...
shoveling snow is no fun...but mowing the yard isn't either...so work is work no matter the season...
====
winter;
watching mother nature,,,as trees look like something out of scifi with frost all over them..shining in the early sunslight at day break...
watching snowflakes slowly coming down,..sparkling in the light...from the garage lamps..
catching snowflakes on your tongue...and feeling how they tickle when they fall on your nose..
watching the dog stick her muzzle in the snow bank and coming out all full of snow and snuffling and sneezing...
watching ground squirrels and tree squirrels scampering around..leaving itty bitty foot tracks
watching birds flitting around and leaving tracks in the snow...
finding deer tracks
finding rabbit tracks........

there are many nice things about winter...
as someone said...
hot chocolate..soup and sandwich lunches
football games for some

each season has it's ups n downs....

best thing about winters.........christmas trees.......and yard displays in the snow at night shining so nice and giving a warm glow in the heart n soul...

take care

While I was growing up my father owned a trucking company. So, his friends would stop by every now and then from other parts of the US.

The thought I still remember today from a guy around my age who lived in Minnesota was....well when it is cold you cuddle a lot more. Babies are born thanks to the cold.
You spend quality time together where others have other things to do.
You just have a better relationship.

Almost made me want to move to Minnesota back then.

Okay, velvet dresses.

Variety

Sensation

Downhill

Cross-country

The gorgeous confrontation with impermanence

Easy tracking

Snowflakes caught on little pink tongues, and so forth

The impossible knitting-together of a billion separate little things to make one great blanket over all

Naked snow angels with golden halos

The clear, cold communion with all the Northern people who came before

The crunch under booted foot

Re-waxing along the trail; bread and cheese and chocolate, and wine from a bota

Stout, and good Irish whiskey--which are just silly affectations at the beach.

The night-time science fiction star-field effect when you click on your brights at high speed

Waking to the impression that Someone picked up your city or town or farm as you slept and shook it in its glass dome

Diamonds, emeralds, rubies and saphires littering the your sunny front yard or lofty windowsill

The unmistakable sorting out of those who revel in what is, on the one hand, and those who whine and wish on the other

Cracking open the skylight after dawn but before she wakes; the bracing invisible cascade washing my nakedness; reaching out on the roof for a cold white handfull; the pale snowy beauty exposed as I gently draw back her covers; delight that her sleep posture is so immodest; what comes next!; and what comes next!

The risk of frostbite and its lesson in mindfulness

Showing her the pain of its near approach and the special, inescapable, from-the-inside-out pain of warming back from the danger.

Teaching her how to be still and send warmth to the cold places to keep the danger at bay.

Blizzards!

(and the fact that they will never be hurricanes)

The brave little redberry bush along the roadside

The changes in the language of trees: from summer ruffling to autumn rustling to winter whistling, and then the special ponderous quiet of white-laden branches, and the extra shrillness of the winter storm-howl.

The stalwartness of the evergreens, highlighted against the sounds mentioned above and against the deciduous-trunk-gray and the snow-white.

The risks of slipping or sliding or crashing or being caught out unprepared, and their lessons in mindfulness

Patterns of frost on glass and warm things pressed aganst it

The coziness of night come earlier and staying longer

The blessedness of lengthening days

Aurora Borealis

Walking on water

Northern Spring, Northern Summer and Northern Autumn

Deep, ancient rhythm

I could always find the bright spot, but sometimes it's really fun to blow out the candle. Giggling as I write. It's all in good fun. But I'd pick the south if given a choice. Some folks sure know how to take the sail out of the float or is it the float out of the boat, or the float out of the sail? Hmmmm.

Talk about negativity, here we are just riding along having fun and someone has to ingest a bit of seriousness into this thread. Stop it right now! Or, I'm going to tell the mods. [8D]

Ok people as you were. I think Jetblue is having a great airfare special on tickets to anywhere tropical, gotta run.

I like the variety of having seasons change and wearing sweaters

...lest we forget...long sleeves and turtle necks cover up bruises on tender white milky places very very nicely.

DesertRat -> RE: Good things about a northern winter? (12/5/2005 1:00:06 PM)

Being able to wear a leather jacket and other cool things.

Cross country skiing in the quiet forests.

The unspoiled beauty of freshly fallen snow, even in a city.

Tobogganing.

Standing on the shore of Lake Superior with ice stretching out to the horizon and listening to the deep silence.

The northen lights on crisp, moonless nights. But then, the aurora is also beautiful on summer nights.

Bundling up in an arctic parka and standing out in a major blizzard, chuckling at the elements.

Much as I love(d) all those things, I am happier down here in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Sartoris32801 -> RE: Good things about a northern winter? (12/5/2005 1:55:55 PM)

Dear Diary,

December 8: 6:00 PM.
It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9:
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snow plow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.

December 12:
The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man. I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14:
Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15:
20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Explorer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16:
Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like heck. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17:
Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20:
Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22:
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think he's is lying.

December 23:
Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she ... nuts??? Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24:
6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch that guy who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his hair. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for the snowplow.

December 25:
Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the #$%&*!! slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to kill her.

December 26:
Still snowed in. Why did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27:
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze.

December 28:
Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. SHE is driving me crazy!!!

December 29:
10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30:
Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars for the bump on his head. The wife went home to her mother. Another 9" predicted.

December 31:
Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8:
I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

[:D] Keep em coming folks, I'm loving the north more and more. But I'm still leaving in a couple of months.

Good things about the north: This climate appears to harbor people with a warm, healthy, make ya want to slap ya knee and some bodies face kind of sense of humor. Takes the chill right out off your back in put it aside for a moment or two. come mere, come mere, group hug.

Mmmmmmmm how about catching a slight something in your chest from someone dear to you and taking the opportunity to indulge in a nice hot toddy? Or two. (Then being colonized again and again and again....)
