Was just sitting here wondering why
people believe in what they can't see?

What does this being do for them, what kind of purpose does it serve?

How has it changed your lives?

Always, knees

Faith.

It gives people peace, and a sense of purpose and belonging.

My belief in air (can't see it unless I'm in Los Angeles, heh) allows me to breathe.

My belief in energy and what it creates (in people, from thoughts, from earth, etc.) gives me a sense of understanding about things I couldn't understand before (I know that's a really uninformative answer, but it makes sense to me!).

I don't believe in a God in the way I used to, but respect that others do. For those in my family who believe in God, that belief seems to ease them through their burdens and give them hope that they might not have without it.

Yeah, the air/oxygen thing is a big one for me.

I've also not seen alot of my inside parts (hopefully NEVERRRR) but I take tahe medical professional's word on it that they exist.

If God wanted us all to believe in him through blind faith, he/she/it, didn't do a really great job covering it's tracks...

I remember reading a paper on the probability that, after the big bang (when the universe was expanding faster than the speed of light, and all natural laws were still in flux) the chances of all the variables just happening to fall into the right place for life to come into being were billions upon billions to one. Any slight variance in gravitation, element interation, chemical laws, thermodynamics... and none of us would exist. Now, some would say, "sure, that just means that there may have been billions of cycles where life didn't exist, and we just happen to be in one where everything fell into place." But to me, the numbers are too mind boggling. Within that freaking huge whack of improbability, I ascribe God.

I think he/she/it pushed the odds in our favor, and in favor of life throughout the universe. For what reason, I have no idea...

But I do find something positive in the notion that God wanted all this to be.

That's why it's called belief, and not knowledge.

There are many things that can't be seen but are obviously true...how about a flu virus...or electrons...or love.

If you are talking about religion then many would say good and evil are proof enough...others would disagree.

Myself there is a need...a need to believe in something greater than myself...something that can push aside oblivion… something I can ask to change the course of my future…someone to beg forgiveness for my sins…someone to help make sense of infinity of time and space.

My beliefs are not without doubts…but in times of need they can give me peace and hope.

Don't be daft, it's the best stuff on earth. It's arguable whether it exists or not, but you've got to keep the faith alive :-) .

I think it's interesting that this post came up... I'd been sitting for a couple of days thinking about something I wanted to blog, but couldn't figure out exactly what I wanted to say -- you see, I realized over the weekend that I have -never- in my entire life, had "faith". I believe in a lot of things that other people would consider 'flaky', but only because I've actually had experience with them. It's been the one defining factor of my search for "spirituality" my entire life... and in the end, I chose a metaphysical path that did not require me to have 'blind faith'.  There are other thoughts running 'round, but I'll try to chase them down later.

Your belief in air isn't what allows you to breathe. The existence of air is what allows you to breathe and that happens independent of your belief.

Faith is belief in something for which there is no evidence. In any other area of life this kind of dynamic is considered to be insane. Religious and spiritual matters are typically given a pass and it is typically considered out of bounds to question anothers beliefs in those realms. I think it is time faith and beliefs become more frequently and legitimately challenged. Many base their actions on their beliefs and many times these actions are injurious to others.

Consider the beliefs of our current President - rather conservative Christian and fundamentalist. The administration formed some foreign aid policies around that kind of belief. They stopped distributing condoms and insisted on abstinence only sex education in sub sahran african countries. These countries have rates of HIV infection that are second to none. There is no cure for HIV - treatment if you can afford it, but no cure.

By attaching some foreign aid to policies like this the administration basically signed the death warrants of thousands, if not millions, of sub saharan african people. He/they did this in the name of religion and morality. It doesn't seem legitimate to me, but hey, its all a matter of faith, and that is beyond question or reproach.

i was just discussing this situation with a colleague last night at dinner!

And i agree that we need to question and challenge faith and belief systems, especially when they are used to govern a country~

I believe that you can see love in a person walking down the street. When I see a good looking woman walking down the street I think that I would LOVE to boink her. You eyes can trick you into seeing what is not true.
